Last night was breezy and balmy. This morning we woke to tropical storm Gordon with heavy rain and winds up to 45mph. September is hurricane season in Florida so I’ll take a tropical storm over a hurricane any day. Our car was parked outside, easily accessible from the hotel but a challenge in the wind-driven rain. We had planned to transfer our Florida clothes for some clothes for Peru on the day of our flight. Now I had to try to stay dry as I ran to and from the car. I didn’t stay dry. After the transfer I spent the next hour in our room with a hairdryer on my wet clothes. We opted for the hassle-free (and dry) hotel airport transfer and ate a late lunch at MIA instead of the going to the ... read more

My poor body felt broken after sleeping on a bed that was like a rock and listening to noisy traffic while in our 3rd floor hotel room that faced a high traffic road. After some much needed early morning coffee and an Asian influenced breakfast at the Tanuki Japanese Restaurant, included at Hotel Allpa, by 8 AM we asked to change rooms and to have more comforters to sleep on doubled up on the bed to make it more possible to sleep on. I felt like I was acting out the story of the Princess and the Pea. The very nice staff were understanding. Our new room, 502 on the fifth floor, was much larger than room 303 and because it was farther from the road traffic, seemed quieter. By 10:30 AM we had changed rooms, ... read more

Sandra from Kaypi Tours met our now expanded group of 22 people at the Hotel Allpa for our included guided tour of Lima. Our bus was late so we began by walking 6 blocks to the Huaca Pucllana Temple built around 2,000 years ago. Lucky for us Sandra used to be a docent here so we ended up with an unexpected private tour. The entrance fee is only $1.80 US per person for senior citizens and since most of us were in that category we were moved in quickly. Little is known about this early culture, but we do know it was built before Machu Picchu by a culture headed by women, the first people of Lima, the Peaceful Lima People. They believed the gods controlled their environment and it is now believed that this place ... read more

Dave and I enjoyed an early morning farewell breakfast (I finally got my avocado!) at Hotel Polo in Cusco with Celia and Larry, and Kathy and Bud, before we bade our new friends farewell. Since the six of us had been separated from the rest of our Kaypi group, we were unable to say goodbye to our other new friends so if you are reading this blog, we enjoyed meeting you all and sharing this wonderful journey and we look forward to hearing of your future travel adventures. Still nursing some symptoms of altitude sickness, we were whisked to the airport, where, while waiting for our plane to Lima, Dave sipped tea and I canvassed the elegant airport shops selling expensive and beautiful baby alpaca items, confirming my good decisions to buy from Andean Colors where, ... read more

Our LC Peru flight to Lima from Cusco touched down around noon. It’s a familiar airport to us by now, we have flown in and out from Lima a few times. We still recall having a leisurely (but interesting) dinner in the departure lounge a few nights ago, the first of a kind when we spent a relaxing few hours at the airport with no destination to go. No, this time we were not going to stay in Wyndham next to the airport. The driver from Radisson was waiting just outside the arrival lounge to pick us up. The last time we stayed in Lima, we briefly touched Miraflores when we visited Huaca Pucclana and the Larco Museum. We liked Miraflores. Not to mention that we loved Debora in Radisson. She rocks! “You know, you are ... read more

I was contacted by a friend of mine concerning travel to South America. I was a little hesitant, for I had already had a vacation this year, but then I thought about it, and I said why not. Saying that, now I was on a journey to this wonderous location which was quite unexpected. There were two others and me that decided to take this journey. I was so excited, and for our main reason for the travel, we were going to one of the worlds wonders, Machu Picchu. To get there we were going to fly into Lima, Peru, then take transportation to Cusco, and make our way to Machu Picchu. Now Lima is the capital and the largest city of Peru. It is located in the central coastal part of the country, overlooking the ... read more

Huaca Pucclana or Pucclana Pyramid lies right in the heart of central Lima, in the Miraflores District. It is a magnificent archeological piece that was made of clay on seven staged platforms. To that end, it is not exactly a typical pyramid that we usually visualize. It was built in 4thcentury A.D. and was considered a ‘sacred village’ by the Incas. The structure is surrounded by a wall to define the outer limit whereas the central part is divided in segments and a large segment of the pyramid was used as the administrative section by the Incas. We booked a tour earlier and the tour takes about an hour to cover various sections of the Pyramid and the guide explained in detail why it was built and how different sections were used. Quite fascinating that the ... read more

The flight landed on time. Immigration formality was over relatively quickly, …no, it was nowhere close to the chaos we saw in Mexico City. By the time we picked up our luggage and came out of the terminal it was close to 10 pm. And the Wyndham hotel was just across the street. Actually, one does not need to come out of the main terminal at all; there is a walkway from the departure level straight to the hotel. We didn’t know that. Anyway, it was not a problem taking a five minute walk down the front road to reach the main lobby. And boy oh boy; it was a fish market. There were ten to fifteen guests who just arrived and were jostling to get close to the hotel reception; and the staffs were just ... read more

Here we are, I'm flying on my own to the North, with a first stop of 48 hours in Lima. Let's put it simply, since my first visit back in 2002, I must have come between 15 and 20 times in Lima. I'm not a local, but it's not that far. My friend has been living there for something looking like forever. He went from single, to married, and today they have two children. None of us are getting any younger! Most tourists will stay 24 hours or even less in Lima while visiting Peru. The city is indeed not the best looking and can be also dangerous if you have no idea where you are heading. But Lima has something special, it is for me one of the world capital for food. This from top ... read more

It was April 2017 and time to get off Curaçao again! This time I went with Jurick, one of my best friends who I grew up with in my neighbourhood. In January I saw this particular travel agency having a special price on tickets to Perú, only valid for that one day and you had to go personally to book and pay immediately. We couldn't let this chance go, so I went immediately there after work. Even though I had to wait long, I didn't care. While waiting for my turn at the travel agency, I took advantage to do some correction work for school. And then the flights were booked and paid for! It was the first time I travelled with Jurick. I arranged everything (hostels, flights, itinerary etc) and he just had to give ... read more
