Yo yo yáll, this is Rich. well, i took my beloved for ANOTHER birthday extravaganza (count them, that´s TWO presents! and a card! that´s more than ive ever got anyone else ever! its probably more than everyone else combined too). this time was a fantastically expensive (about 30 quid)flight over the nazca lines in a cessna. how brilliant am i? im surprised you have to ask, but basically im fantastic, and by far the best boyfriend anyone could ever have. The lines are cool. Everybody knows about the figures, but the lines are probably more interesting, mainly because nobody knows what they{re really for. Despite several unlikely theories about pre-olympic running tracks and alien landing sites (i mean honestly, does that sound likely? idiots, idiots everywhere...) they probably relate to religious stuff and sources of sub-terranean ... read more

Hello Blighty! TODAY I HAVE TOUCHED THE YELLOW TEETH OF A DUDE 1000 YEARS OLD. FOR REAL! But first. Greetings from a Jen, who hasnt had a hot shower in 2 weeks. We checked into a hostel last nast which advertised 24 HOUR HOT WATER, with glee. Rich ran the shower for a minute and proclaimed it was indeed hot. Imagine what a buzz I got from this news. Not as much as a buzz as I got from the metal tap as I went to get in and got a darn electric shock! Nooo! Denied! All I want is a hot shower.... Anyway, we are currently in the desert. You can quite literally drive for hours and not see anything green. You wouldn´t want to get stuck here on your own. Well, where we are ... read more

left lima yesterday (alright, now it has been a few weeks since i left and i have returned) so no more mcDonalds¡¡. I arrived in pisco and booked a tour for today to go to the islands around paracas and to a "national" park. I ran into roger a canadian guy i met in sucre, bolivia. it is a small world, when i was in cusco i ran into a girl who lived in the same house i did in guatemala. of course i ran into paddy and suzie in cusco for the 5th and not last time on this trip!!! today (a few weeks ago), I took a bus from the hotel to paracus and then like many other tourists took a boat (there must have been 8 boats) to the islands. The islands are ... read more

I'm currently in Pisco, a 3 hour bus ride south of Lima. Today I've been travelling with a Swedish guy (also called Adam), and tomorrow we're going on a tour of the Paracas National Reserve and de Islas Belistas, both of which are known for amazing marine & bird life. I felt pretty shell shocked for my first couple of days in Peru, but I'm slowly adjusting to travelling without the convenience of being with friends and speaking the language. Actually my Spanish is improving all the time. I think in another week or picking the odd bit up and practising what I've learnt, I should be able to get by, maybe throwing in a little Spanglish from time to time. Currently undecided whether to do a Spanish course in Arequipa, which is probably the next ... read more

I had one of the best weekends of my life this weekend, along with some of the worst experiences. And to top it off, I am hurt, and might have to go to the doctor here :-( So I guess I¨ll start from the beginning. We left at 10:00pm on Friday night to drive to Paracas. There were 11 of us, plus a guide, his sister, and the driver. So 14 total, in a tiny van. We all thought it would be smart to take sleeping aids for the 6 hour drive, so we could just fall asleep and wake up at the hotel in Paracas. I even decided a couple glasses of wine with my new friends Jennifer and Eden would help me sleep even better. What we didn´t take into consideration was that this ... read more

We started off today by waking up late... thank goodness.....next we went to visit bodegas. We arrived at the Vista Alegre (a commercial bodega started by the Picasso family from Italy in 1857) only to find out that today is a regional Peruvian holiday and no tour guides are working at this particular bodega. We stand around aimlessly until, luck would have it, Sam Hoys (our former tour guide) happen to drive in with his new tour group. We new he was on a similar itinerary but didn't´t expect to bump into him. He had already made arrangements with the security guard to have a tour....so we tagged along. Next we departed on our own to an artisan bodega (Bodega Catadore) on the other side of Ica. Though hard to find, this establishment preserved the old ... read more

- FOOD: Breakfast at the HI (yes, I set foot in the place). - AREA: So pretty set in the middle of sand dunes the height of mountains (as steep as mountains too I discovered when climbing up them to go sand boarding). Speeding down the sand dunes on your bum and looking like a sand monster at the end of it. 2 hours in Lima - my impressions were BIG city, lots of neon lights and busy. - PEOPLE: Gringo city. But nice Gringos who let me hang out with them. Sucker hostel man who is taken in by a smile. - WEATHER: The joy of the hot sun (not such a joy when climbing the dunes) Tue 28th June: I slept for hours. It's so nice to be in a warm place at last! ... read more

Today I woke up with severe neck-pains from my tumble yesterday evening. I´m still sneezing out globs of sand. At 5:30 AM we departed for Isla Ballesta via Pisco. (I'm not sure why we get up so early...getting old I guess) We boarded a small tourist boat and headed west towards the Islands from the small fishing village of Paracas. There we had fantastic views of Peruvian boobies..... sea lions, penguins and hundreds of assorted birds. The odor was rather overpowering.... what do you expect from islands full of guano. One island in particular was absolutely carpeted by cormorants....the sight would have made even Alfred Hitchcock a tad jittery... especially with no phone booths in sight. I got a tad sea sick.... Luckily I popped some Hydrazine just in time. After returning to shore we spent ... read more
