In the past six weeks, i have been fortunate to live amidst humanity. People enjoying the simple pleasures in life - family, friends, the day, food, life... It seems, somehow the 1st world nations have lost touch with the truly critical matters of life, love and faith in an all mighty and merciful God. Not the power of the dollar or euro or yen, but the power of good and of love. Amidst all of the povery and suffering, life evolves and blossoms into all which man ascribes and can become - kindness of a street vendor towards and aging man or woman, children walking freely in the city - without the concerns of perversions in the 1st world of developed nations. For twenty three years, i adhered to a great extent to the teachings of ... read more

Well... Dave´s birthday... now what can I do to make sure that he remembers it for the rest of his life?? I think that a trip to the ancient city hidden in the cloud forests of peru should just about do it! Machu picchu (MP) for the non ancient peruvian historians amongst you, is an old Incan city... think that dave has told you who the incans were already! Anyway for some strange reason it was not "discovered" until the 1910s. Maybe that is because it is surrounded by unassailable mountainous andean cloud forests (called such because they are so high that they are constantly in the clouds!!) If you have seen pictures of south america then you would have seen pictures of mp... which is a good thing as we still cannot upload our pictures!! ... read more

Turen er lagt opp slik at ... read more

Welcome all to our next instalment. Before I start I feel that I need to address some comments I have recieved from my previous blog re: drug use. In Peru, coca leaves are everywhere you look. When you have a meal, you get coca tea. Every shop sells the leaves as they are meant to have medicinal value, especially for dealing with high altitudes. They are given to kids as afternoon tea. Put into lasagnes as a seasoning. Turns out that the coca leaves, if properly processed, can be used to make cocaine too, which is why these leaves are illegal out of Peru. However, the raw product has no narcotic effect. So to those of you who are convinced that we are now hardened drug users... relax... Thought Í'd clear that up just in case ... read more

Life has been a series of circular references - start at one place, go for some period of time - say 5 or 20 years, and select a place... then return to the place and evaluatewhere you have been and what you have done during the period of time... A long time ago, in a life far away - i was in machupicchu - the capital city of the Inca empire. back then, the train would leave cusco, and it semed it went for a long time until it reached machupicchu - well, it kind of did go for almost four hours. on arrival to the train depot - everything had changed - as people and places have a tendancy of doing over time. The once rustic train depot has become a city called aguas calientes ... read more

I arrived in Cusco at 7 am on Saturday morning from Lima, and my cab from the airport came complete with a tour agent who recommended a hostel with private bath for about $6 a night. It doesn´t have any windows, but the price is great and the guy who runs it is very friendly without being overly attentive, so I´m pretty happy with it. After I checked in, the innkeeper went to make me mate de coca (a tea made with coca leaves that helps prevent altitude sickness) and the tour agent sat me down to plan out my week. It was about 7:30 in the morning, and I´d been up since four, so I was in no mood to argue with her. I let her give me a plan and her agency´s prices, and ... read more

So we were up at 5am this morning and then up at the top of the mountain where Machu Picchu lies at 6;30.....it was absolutely amazing. We really were all at a loss for words. There were just soo many interesting sites to see and the place was HUGE. It is located in a cloud forest so that made it even cooler to see. I took a ton of pictures...more than a roll. We are taking a train back to cuzco in an hour and then laura, marc, carolyn and i are taking a bus down to Puno on Lake Titicaca. I will be there tomorrow before heading for the rest of the time to Bolivia. Love to all. D... read more

S 13º 30.471 / W 071º 58.834 A MA LU YA - DO NOT LIE A MA SU WA - DO NOT STEAL A MA QUELLA - DO NOT BE LAZY However phoenitically incorrect, and my appologies to those fluent in quechua - these are the three sacred words passed down from the Inca to the people of the TAHUANTINSUYO... The greatest and oldest empire, developed in the American continent and that had the city of Cusco as its headquarters, goes back to the year 1200 A.C. The word Tawantinsuyo comes from a name composed by two Quechua terms: Tawa, which means four; and Suyo, which means State. The territory area of the Empire was enormous, it occupied over 3'000,000 Km2 and it also encompassed 5000 km (3,107 miles) of coast over the Pacific Ocean, which ... read more

at the emergency room, after having my bodily fluids examined with microscopic scrutiny - it was 300 soles nuevos, a script for a bunch of stuff and call me if you need to in three days.... Everywhere i watched the TV in the last 36 hours in peru, it was about the life of one man, and the good he did in confronting communism, castro, the argentine dictatorships, pinochett and gw bush as well as several other international despots... - i guess it depends where you live - or does it ... read more
