We made it! It is kind of surreal to finally be there after this long trek. It feels like we´ve been on the trail for much longer than only 3 days. This morning we woke up at 3:00 am to race into the dark to be one of the first at the Sun gate. Andre was actually the first there with two other´s from our group. What an amazing sight... Machu Picchu´s beauty is inexplicable!... read more

- FOOD: Well deserved huge pizza after walking for hours. Coffee and cake on the first class train back. - AREA: WOW, worth it's status as a prime tourist site. Amazing, smooth rocked architecture, cool acoustics, stunning forested mountained backdrop, spiritual rocks. Climb up the famous Waynapicchu mountain and down to the Temple of the Moon through jungle scenery. - PEOPLE: Not too many to begin with but a mass of American tourists by the end. Excitable adults on the first class train back when the 'entertainment' came on - an alpaca fashion show! - WEATHER: Glorious sunrise over the site. Sat 18th: We got up very early to get to Machu Picchu (it means 'old mountain' in Quechuan) for sunrise. I tagged along with the tour group Stephen was on but got left behind as ... read more

Day 3 Such an easier day! The slopes are nice and not too steep and there was a beautifull white dog that keeped me company on the trail. I made it to the last camp before Machu Picchu at around 11h00 am and the weather was just perfect. Andre´s knees are giving him problems now so he took it a little bit slower. And guess who has the cold now!!... read more

More bad things but I also went horse riding, which was very good. I bought some jeans, you see, so I could. They're a bit tight, but tight is warm, right? That's how they wear them round here and they're also good for riding. At first, I thought I'd made a big mistake by saying I had experience because my pony was massively unruly, and I thought they'd given me an unbroken one or something because they thought I was a cowgirl. Honestly, he started off like Buckaroo incarnate, only without the very still bit at the beginning. However, once we got into a group with other horses and after a little while, we seemed to come t... read more

Well, it has not arrived. I shall try to keep this one upbeat though I'm feeling less and less of a trooper. The hotel I stayed in last night had no telephone, no heating and they just didn''t understand the problem. I'm completely paralysed by my lack of language. After running to a shop this morning to phone the airport again (they wouldn't pick up at all yesterday and receiving the bad news that they do not have my luggage but could not tell me any more or answer my English questions, I went straight to my books. Rarely have I applied myself with such rigour and vigour to an academic pursuit in my life. I learnt words, where I could , for bad, worse, immediately, furious, complaint, disaster, scandal, Office of Fair Trading, You'll pay ... read more

Day 2 Still got my butt kicked! We had to go trought dead women pass wich is at 4200 meters above the sea level. The air is very very thin and every step is a challenge. Andre decided to hike the way the porters do: with sandals on! His feet got better and he still made it to the dead woman pass an hour before I did. My hips, knees and shoulders hurt; I can´t wait to go to bed and get some sleep as the first night was freezing! Thank goodness for coca leaves!!... read more

Hello again! We just got back from the requisite trip to Machu Picchu. It's like an Inca Disneyland! We expected to see Mickey and Goofy at any time. Ok, it wasn´t that bad. We actually really enjoyed Machu Picchu. It can just be a little intimidating because you know that every tourist around Cusco is going to be going there, and that´s a lot of tourists. Figuring out how to get to MP is the hardest part of all. There are many options, none of them convenient, and all pricey. We looked into doing the Inca Trail, but it turns out you have to book about 2 months in advance to get a spot. Since we didn´t know when we would be in Cusco until the week before we got here, that wasn´t happening. So we ... read more

Normally, I wouldnt have put "role" instead of "roll" - I put this down purely to tiredness, not my regressed spelling age. I actually don´t know how to spell acommodation, however. My Spanish phrasebook is annoying me. It doesn´t tell you how to say "I need", "there was" or even "because". "Because" must be in there somewhere, surely. Nontheless, I´m going to buy a real Spanish-English dictionary. Though perhaps this will be difficult. I failed again today to buy a notebook. They had authentic-looking, leather bound, recycled-paper appearing things, but I want something like you get in a Intermarche, Cherbourg - lined and flexible.... read more

Wow! I can’t believe I did it! The Inca Trail! It’s just something else. Day 1: A Gentle Start The bus picked us up from our hostel at stupid o clock and it was a couple of hours before we reached our first stop, a little village called Piskacuchu were there were hundreds of locals all selling big sticks for walking, coco leaves, water and snacks. We grabbed a quick breakfast and when i went out the back of the restaurant there was a big cage full of guinea pigs! No doubt headed for the dinner table that night! aaww!! So after we were suitably fed and watered and had bought enough snacks and chocolate to gets us through 45km of mountains reaching 4200m we were off. The road that takes you to the famous Km82 ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Ollantaytambo June 16th 2005

- FOOD: Nothing much to report here for once. - AREA: High season and fully booked up. Not used to this. Ollantaytambo is a small village with a relazed feel with a fantastic Inca fortress, old Inca plaza and hills to climb (steep and hard work though). Cheap, nice hostel. - PEOPLE: Chatty locals. Wish I could chat more than the basics with them. Old man begging for money and crying. Heartbreaking. Cute local boy who decided to be my guide for climbing the hill. Other cute locals who demand money! - WEATHER: Burning sun. Thur 16th: I left my backpack behind in the hostal as it's family run and seems safe, asked them 10 times if I could DEFINITELY have the room on my return. They smiled sweetly as said "Si, si" but didn't write ... read more
