Rosco's Blog La Paz-Cusco We all arrived into La Paz, from Oruru, in a good tight group, we kept it all together until a diversion on the way to the hotel, and at the last very busy intersection, we lost the truck. The moto’pulled into the undercover of the hotel just as a thunderstorm struck the city. What a grand lightning and thunder display followed, with flooded streets and people scurrying everywhere. Murray and Geraldine had the bright idea, once they realized that they were lost, to stay put and wait for the rain to ease, then Murray found a phone and rang us at the hotel and told us where he was. They were only about two blocks from the hotel, so Gerardo jumped in a taxi and went to them and led them back ... read more

Life is filled with irony, isn´t it? Yesterday I took the local bus to nearby Urubamba to find hair conditioner. The stores in Ollantaytamba are more like corner shops and none of the ones I visited had conditioner. On the walk to the bus stop I noticed gangs of children in large scale water fights. Hmmmm, must be what they do on a hot day in the weekend. School should begin for them soon, so maybe this is a last hurrah. As soon as the mini-van filled with people we were on our way to Urubamba, which means "Flat land of Spiders". I noticed people closing the windows whenever the vehicle slowed down. Kids were lined up along the streets with water balloons to throw at anything that passed. The fellow beside me tried to explain ... read more

Hola ¿Qué Pasa mis amigos? It is a beautiful morning here in Urubamba. There are flowers everywhere on the grounds of our hostal. We have the entire place to ourselves. The best part is the three macaws that are caged in the middle of our plaza. They are extreamly loud and work better than a rooster. The sine shines from most of the afternoon with sporadic rain showers but the sun never goes away. There are gourgeous rainbows here that seem to always be jus beyond our reach. Everything is very green and the Inca river flows very strongly through the valleys. Yesterday (2/2) we split up into small groups of three and completed our first project. We all traveled to different nearby towns to find different types of food, brought them back to the hostal, ... read more

I'd like to preface this blog entry with an apology if everything seems to be written in cliches or superlatives. It's hard to describe anyways, besides the fact that we're paying for internet time. So, if you're thinking in your head that I should'nt have graduated with an English degree, please forgive me. Yesterday was the horseback ride in Urubamba which is in the Sacred Valley about an hour away. We chose to pay for a private taxi set up by the ranch, which I am very glad for since the turns were sickening. At the same time, it was nice to watch the scenery and not have some stranger breathe on you. Either way, I think both Tyler and I would've been happier had the driver been going 20 miles slower. Seeing the countryside ... read more

I´ve now been in Cusco for three weeks. It has been great to live in an apartment away from the tourist area of the city. For one thing you learn about the pace of life (very fast) and see how people go about their everyday chores. One of the things I like about So. Am. is the organization of the retail neighborhoods. All the same type stores are on the same street making comparison shopping pretty easy. My street, Calle Belen, has many claims to fame. It had most of the optical shops, certainly most of the roasted chicken restaurants and the majority of the cake shops. The last fact made the street complete bedlam for the days leading up to Mother´s Day and even all that day. Cakes were pouring out of shops in huge ... read more
