Today, Wednesday, we woke early in Lima to take a taxi to the airport for a flight to Cusco in the southern part of Peru. This town is the historic capital of the Inca Empire and is the closest airport to Machu Picchu and therefore there are a ton of departures on offer for the short flight. Cusco is high in the Andes mountains (11,100ft or 3,330m) and apparently a lot of visitors suffer from altitude sickness which locals offer to treat with tea made with coca leaves....legal here in Peru but not at home. Our arrival in Cusco was complicated by the fact that the rental car office was miles from the airport and that somehow our reservation has been cancelled, and all their cars were booked! Thankfully we found another company who had just ... read more

Ollanataytambo is a massive stone fortress thought to be the only remaining example of pre-Columbian urban planning. The terraces were built on the mountainside to make farming possible. The irrigation systems are an architectural accomplishment that are still in use today. The construction of the temple it at the highest point of the town and the living spaces are at the base. The Incas also had very large and effective storage systems for their food. When the Spaniards arrived they had enough food for 7 years. The hiking stick came in very handy today indeed. The vista from the top is a just reward for the huffing and puffing (remember we are at about 9,000 feet). Moving slowly is a major key to getting to the top successfully. In the town below the locals are selling ... read more

The last two days have been mostly planes, airports and buses. Leaving the ship by zodiac and flying to Guayaquil, then on to Lima, overnight at the airport then an early flight to Cusco, Peru, arriving near noon, board the bus to the main town plaza and have lunch. After lunch we visited the Circuito Religioso Cusco Basilica Catedral which has at least 25 altars and many famous painting and altar pieces. Peru is 98 % catholic but they retain many of the ideologies of the Andean culture opposing the catholic faith, such as women being equal to men with the privilege of giving communion, the idea that the Virgin Mary is actually equal Jesus Christ. Back on the bus for a winding road through the Andes Mountains and our destination for two nights, Urubamba and ... read more

Today was our adventure day out on our own. It came with a warning to Andrew that I only had a vague idea of exactly how we were going to get around and that a lot of it may be a guessing game. There seemed to be somewhat limited information online about getting to and from las salinas near maras unless you wanted to go on a tour. So, armed with my little bit of Spanish, we took off to find the mini buses. When we got to the street with the mini buses, I tried to haggle on the price, but they weren't budging. Then, I saw that the price was printed on a sign, so I assumed this was not a time for haggling and we jumped in one. This was an hour ride ... read more

Hi all, so we have made it from Puno to Cusco here in Peru, parked up the motos and the chase truck and have been tourists for the past few days. Many of the adventurers were pretty gratefull to be off the motos and have a few days without too much pressure. I must admit we have had some 'Shoppers' in the past, but this lot leaves them for dead!! If this carries on I will have to look for a trailer or a bigger truck!! Looks like all those that have been left at home are going to have an early Christmas or Birthday when these guys get home! Anyway, here is a catch up from Howard and below that, Eric the bloody Monkey has sent more dribble, so I hope you all enjoy the ... read more

Met up with Jasmin in Cuzco where I promptly fell ill. We made it to Urubamba in a crowded collectivo. I was so sick I didn't even notice the town was nestled in lush mountains. Of all the places I could have gotten sick, this was the most luxurious place I could have recuperated thanks to Jasmin and her points. After a full day sleeping the next day we got out and saw the Moray archeological site and Maras salt mines. We moved on to Ollantaytambo, super cute town. We went to the south side of town and climbed all over the ruins.... read more

After 2.5 weeks of sun and sea, it´s time to unpack the fleece sweaters and rain coats - helloooo Sacred Valley in Peru! Luckily enough, altitude sickness hasn´t impacted us too much so far. Instead of using medicines, we have relied mainly on taking it easy, not eating too much, no alcohol, etc, and on the local specialty of coco tea. So far, so good! We felt a tad dizzy and tired on the first day, and on the second day everything seems pretty much back to normal. That is, other than the fact that we seem to be out of breath much more easily.. The surroundings here are beautiful, with the mountains, the river, and the Incan ruins with their terraces. The people are very friendly - I love it how the kids always say ... read more

The guide met us in the lobby. We had already checked out and eaten breakfast. Off to the airport for a short flight to Cuzco or as the Quachua spell it Cosco. Another excellent flight on LAN. So far the airline has been spectacular in service and hospitality. Our guide, Carlos Sottomayor and our driver Jose, met us at the airport. Once loaded into the van it was off to Urubamba in the Sacred Valley. Carlos is a mixtos, his mother is Incan and his father of Spanish decent. He is a fount of information about the Sacred Valley and the Incan civilization. His depth of knowledge and clarity of explanation were as if listening to an historian and an anthropologist. Later the archaeologist in him would appear. The trip to Urubamba from Cosco starts with ... read more

Finally made it after 3 flights and 24hrs of travelling. We didn't get much sleep but the kids managed well. New York was uneventful and not a Starbucks to be found. Connected for the long flight to Lima and made it safely, but exhausted. Had breakfast in the airport and imagine- they had Starbucks!! No dangerous threats this time through and we were finally off for the last flight to Cusco. Long hour drive to Sacred Valley. Kids started off counting how many dogs they saw on the street...Lindsay got to 76 before we got tired of it and then all fell asleep for most of the ride. The mountains are breathtaking and the villages are an eye opener. Lots of poverty and we were surprised by the state of the housing. If you can call ... read more
