Our rafting trip($40/person, includes lunch, Mayuc Tours, http://www.mayuc.com) got off to a rough start when the contact person showed up 10min late, in a rush, and asked us if we would mind walking to the bus because the streets were closed due to Inti Raymi festivities going on. "We walk 10 blocks. It's okay?" We are still aclimatizing and found it difficult to keep up because he was in such a hurry. We met the rest of the rafters at the Mayuc Tour office on the Plaza de Armas and walked further to the bus. The guides kept yelling "vamos!" at a couple who kept falling behind. We made the bus and were on our way to the river after a breif stop on the outskirts of town to pick up supplies. It was about a ... read more

...we've got fun and games! We got a colectivo (little people carrier that waits til it's full) from Cusco out to Quillabamba on the jungle side of the Andes. For the first time in a while, we were in a town with very few westerners, so it's quite funny seeing the open mouthed stares from the locals - especially the kids. This place was pretty laid back, and had a massive market where we got some essentials for the jungle. And Kees got a massive machete. Our plan was to head to a port on the Urubamba river (the same river we rafted on) and get a boat, as that's as far as the road goes. We had a 5am bus for the port, but that day didn't quite go as planned! About 1hr out of ... read more

Okay so it's been two.5 weeks since my last entry.. I get more and more lazy with this I know. Anyway, so the most interesting things that have happened in the last 2.5 weeks have been, firstly that I got a parasite about 2 weeks ago. Felt like shit one morning and was hauled to the doctor by one of the Projects Abroad people at around noon. Turned out I had a parasite so was given some pills and a massive bottle of oral hydration stuff with " strawberry flavour" - tasted so disgusting, especially when i was already pretty nauseous. Friday 6 of us took the 6 hr night bus to Puno which is in the north, right by Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Half of it is Peruvian, the other ... read more

The last 2 weeks have been hectic. The major event here in Peru has been the floodings due to all the rain we had last week. Lots of houses have been flooded, forcing people out with nothing. Also, lots of the houses up the mountains especially in Cusco, have collapsed as they're pretty fragile. Lots of people are living in the schools and there's also a lot in the sports field just down the road from our house. 2000 tourists were trapped on Machu Picchu as the roads and train tracks were all washed away - they were all flown down by helicopter. According to my host mum, Machu Picchu wont open until April - there's so much work to do. It's pretty much all that's in the news over here.. I'm thinking we'll be helping ... read more

The tale of this weekend: Friday we went for a "hike" around a lake near Chinchero - we werent that many but was a lot of fun anyway. It was a really beautiful place (but then everywhere here is basically beautiful). We walked for about 2-3 hrs or something like that. In the afternoon we all tried to sleep a little as we were going to Cusco for the weekend. Elena and I took a late bus which took 2 hrs to get to Cusco (it usually takes 1) and got to the hostel were we'd all booked ourselves rooms. It was an okay place - buildings in Peru dont seem tohave heating so it was pretty cold, the room was also weird as it had a double bed and smallbathroom downstairs and then a dangerous ... read more

Something I forgot to put in the other entry and something I think deserves it's own entry: I have seen the Peruvian Johnny Depp. It's quite fascinating really, as he now joins the group of non-white Depps out there. I saw the black version in Tanzania (he was one of the drummers at the circus - obviously they're all in the entertainment business). I have now to find the chinese Depp - must go to China. x... read more

So I am in Peru - have been here for 2 days now and have already done so much! So this is gonna be a LONG entry, beware. It's only the hardcore that can get through this baby: Sunday my mum and I went to Copenhagen and stayed at the Hilton (I wasnt paying, obviously) as my flight to Newark was at 9 am monday. The flight was half an hour delayed but it ended up being an hour early getting into Newark. It was really amazing flying over New York and seeing the Empire State building and all other huge landmarks - didnt think to take any photos until on the flight out of there which was a shame cos we didnt fly across it again so only got some pics with it all in ... read more

Hi everyone, It's Nat! Yes I'm still alive! Ok, first things first. Health Update: One of the reasons we went to Urubamba today was so I could go to a health clinic. What an ordeal in itself! We kept going to different clinics and the doctors wouldn't see me because they were on lunch for 2 to 3 hours! Finally ran across one who saw me right away and the doctor spoke a little english and we managed to communicate ok. Mom you'll be happy to know that when the doctor took my temperature, I did not have a fever. So now I've got some antibiotics and something for inflamation of my throat (I think) which I'll take for about 4 days. But the good news is that I was out all day today and even ... read more

This is our fourth day in Peru and it´s day 17 of our holiday. We flew to Lima and had an afternoon and a night there. Big polluted city . . . not very nice hotel . . . hmmm that´s about it really! Then we flew to Cusco - the stop off point for those doing the Inca Trail etc. Cusco is like a cross beween Florence and Dehli (how do I come to that conclusion having not been to either????) full of churches and beggers. Well they aren´t exactly beggars, just poor people wanting to sell you things you don´t want - anything from walking poles and rain ponchos to sweets and watercolours. The result is you can never stand still for more than about 5 seconds without being mobbed! It´s a poor country ... read more

First half of the day was getting to Cusco (also spelled Cuzco). Up at 5:30, on the bus for trip to the airport at 7:00. Check in went pretty smoothly, Mauricio was able to print out most of our boarding passes and security was fine. One thing about this trip that I've forgotten to mention that is a bit annoying is that we have to hand our passports in at every hotel. So, Mauricio has had my passport almost as much as I have. Flight to Cusco was good, only 53 minutes. But I 've got to tell you, coming over a mountain to land in the valley was a weird experience. Mauricio collected our bags and off we went to our buses. Because the streets of Cusco are so narrow, they can't use big buses, ... read more
