The long awaited start of the Inca Trail had finally arrived. We were met on the dot of 05.30 and a short walk later we joined the bus to take us to km82, the starting point of our trek. We stopped en route in Ollantaytambo for breakfast and had to fend off numerous people selling all manner of must have items for the trails (e.g. water, walking sticks, ponchos, coca leaves, coca sweets, etc). No sooner had we started walking than our guide, Victor, stopped for the first of what turned out to be numerous stops that morning. At each he provided some useful information followed by numerous repititions of said information. We soon learned that "in conclusion" was merely an indication that the half way point in the talk may have been reached. It was ... read more

This blog will be told more with pictures than words. Not because I'm tired of blogwriting, but because my entire week in Cuzco and on the Ican Trail was a visual experience. Cuzco is the mecca of gringo travel. Fleeced backpackers stroll through congested narrow streets searching for this or that shop recommended by Lonely Planet. Restaurant hostesses with their menus in hand swoop down on them like vultures on a recently deceased animal. Its nearly impossible to walk in a straight line without someone jumping in front of you, selling you some kind of special tour or alpaca mittens. ¨Restaurant. Yes. Food. Yes. You eat here. Yes. Promise me. Especial for you!¨Its enough to make even the most experienced traveler freak out. Despite this, the city is beautiful. Most of the building are built on ... read more

After being picked up in our bus from our hotel, we set off to the beginning of the 42km trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The bus trip was just over an hour. We picked up some stock of food and walking sticks from the local shops. Also we were told to buy some cocoa leaves, which when you mash them together and hold in the side of your mouth will give you enough protein to keep going (tastes horrible) and is supposedly used to make cocaine. Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 day by day info to come!... read more

A taxi from Miraflores took us to the Hotel Kamana in central Lima for the start of our 9 day Inca tour with Tucan Travel. Our tour guide was Daniel Torres, a trendy young guy, if slightly camp! Turned out he had a taste for extravagant meals out and well built airline cabin crew! Daniel took us for a walk around the Plaza de las Armas (Main square) and the shopping district of central Lima. Lin and I then went on a tour of the San Francisco Convent, and the catacombs which contained thousands of bones, mostly tibia´s, fibia´s and skulls. Bit creepy, but quite interesting. Heading out for a meal in the evening, we happened across the Plaza San Martin where there was an open air concert in full swing. We were ushered through security ... read more

After a day in Cuzco, it was time to check in and have the pre trail briefing............Don´t think so! We went to the travel agent at the pre-arranged time only to find the office shut!! The only shut office on the street had to be ours, it wasn´t feeling too good! We had no idea where to get the bus the next morning, the tour agents didn´t have a clue whether we were still going etc. etc. We arrived at the office.......Open at last!....... at 7 the next morning, off we went at half past. We arrived at KM82, the designated starting point of the inca trail by late morning, after a good feed we were off, almost immediately, the beauty of the trail is apparent, the scenery and varied landscapes become more and more spectacular ... read more

Hey Well I successfully completed the Inka trail even though I felt pretty crap most of the way through!!! In total that is 50Km of trekking!! We went with a company called SAS which were really good, the guide Fredy was very funny! The most impressive thing had to be the amount of food they gave us, each meal was freshly prepared with at least 3 courses! Was pretty amazing considering that they only had a camping stove to use! It was all worthwhile, despite feeling crappy and tired most of the time i really enjoyed it. The first day of the trek is described to be the easy part and in all honesty it was quite gentle.... The scenery was impressive and once again it was nice to be outdoors with fresh mountain air. I ... read more

Hey Its been a while since my last update so here goes i have done quite a bit so if you don´t have time right now save this blog for later! Huaraz Huaraz was fun... we actually took some time out to chill which was nice for a change! On Ivans birthday we booked a 16Km trek to Lake 69. This was an interesting day.....early start with late bus as usual! The lake is set in the Cordillia Blanca so the journey to the national park up to the start of the trek was very impressive. It actually reminded me of Yosemite National Park, we passed huge roack faces and all around us there were snow capped mountains. We started the trek at 4000km Im slowly getting used to this high altitude! Our climb was up ... read more

This was our longest day of hiking - over 10 miles. We started the day with a long climb up that seemed to wake everyone up. After about an hour, we reached the first pass of the day where we took the opportunity for some silly picture taking. After that, we descended on a series of Incan stone steps. And we went down, and down, and down, and down some more. There were a few ups (to a second pass), but it was all down. On one of the uphills, I was able to catch up to the Billy Goat. He's 15 like his twin sister. We chatted on a bunch of different topics mostly revolving around Scotland and how bad Mel Gibson's accent was in Braveheart. Also, at one stop along the way, I showed ... read more
