So i got my student id card with a little trickeration and was on the trail on the 12th. Day 1 was pretty tranquilo. we got picked up at our hostel at 6am and saw a bunch of other gringos on the bus. i am a little weary of talking to and meeting gringos, but they were cool. once we stopped for breakfast we met a british couple who is here travelling and then will be off to belize. there were also several australians, some gringos from Los Angeles, and 4 college kids from dartmouth. surprisingly, we all got along extremely well on the hike. they were very cool people. anyway, day 1 was not a tough hike. we started at about 7,000 ft., lower than the 10,000 of cuzco. our guide, victor, spoke decent english, ... read more

Day 1 - Getting going A 5.30 pickup took us by minibus with the group to KM82, the point on the railway where the 4-day Inca Trail started for us. We got aquainted with the group: Laura, 21. Cambridge girl, full of energy. Seems to have been everywhere. Dave, late twenties ;) Scotsman with a bit of Irish. Full of knowledge, a chatty world traveler. Author of "Poland under the Comunists". Seems to have been everywhere, literally. Stephanie, 26. Canadian, relaxed and well balanced holidaymaker. Obviously the more adventurous kind. Pete and Sarah, 25 and 26. English and Irish explorer types with all the gadgets. Aly, 26. Our guide, a Peruano. Very knowledgeable and interesting fella. After being surrounded by a mad mob selling walking sticks and bottle holders (they surrounded and followed the jeep until ... read more

I just got back from the 4day Inca Trail to Machu Pichu and it was absolutely amazing! We walked for about 6hrs a day, camped each night and ended up at the old Inca ruins of Machu Pichu. It was hard work with a lot of uphill and big steps, and the weather was pretty cloudy and foggy for the first three days and it even rained a bit one day, but when we got there on the fourth day the weather was perfect so we were all so stoked! My group of 14 was made up of a lot of Americans, an Irish couple, a South African woman, a Pom and me, and we had a lot of fun! And our guides and Chef were great too, we ate so well the whole time and ... read more

Othe 27th May 2004 I went to trek the Inca trail in Peru in aid of Scope. My goal was to reach the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu. This was the 'lost' city that had lain undiscovered by the Western world for about 500 years until a Yale University graduate called Hiram Bingham found it again in 1911. 1999……….6wks SOUTH AMERICA-ARGENTINA, PERU............ We were awoken at just after 4 am for the final dash to the Sun Gate to see Machu Pichu unfold itself at sunrise. It is about 1 ½ hour’s walk which is a bit up and down with the usual Inca steps. What I want to know is if the Incas could build such amazing precise walls and architecture why didn’t they make their trails a bit more even. You always have to look where you are walking and make those split second decisions to change the height of your step and where you put your feet. Not always so easy when it’s another early morning start. It was a quick pace to the Sun Gate set by the English girls in a bit of friendly rivalry to beat the Uruguays. ... read more
