On our last day in Peru, we took a morning trip out to the Palomino Islands. It was similar wildlife to the Ballestas Islands, but we got to jump in the water and swim with the sea lions! It was very cold and salty, but the sea lions came right up near us for probably twenty minutes and flipped and splashed us. It was really exciting to get that close and see them so well, and well worth the extra trip. We also saw more penguins, pelicans, and Peruvian boobies. I really enjoyed seeing the Paracas region and climate, but it was a lot more fun getting to swim with the sea lions instead of just looking at them. Off again on another wild adventure, and attempting to blog it -- success yet to be determined. For anyone who doesn´t know why I´m here/what I´m doing, I´m in Peru for 2 weeks with the Navy after finishing a tropical medicine course. We have a research station in Peru and will be working with the Navy stationed here, as well as Peruvian doctors. ´Roughly, it´s about 1wk in Lima doing clinic stuff and visiting hospitals. It´s another week in the Amazon floating on a river boat going from village to village setting up little clinics each day. The idea is that we just might see some of these freaky diseases and parasites we just finished learning about. So we just got in to Lima. So we got back to the ship from Machu Picchu on Wednesday morning, the ship being in port until Thursday evening and so to my relief, realized we had time to do a trip and some shopping, although not that day as we were too tired so took it easy. Woke up Thursday Morning as fresh as a daisy, well almost, to the view outside the cabin window of the port of Callao, Lima in Peru. Callao has a population of 700,000 and is the port for the city of Lima, Peru's capital, but the two cities have merged and the area is now one huge metropolis of 9 million inhabitants. Lima was the vice regal capital, of which the splendid historical centre, designated by UNESCO as a WORLD heritage Site, is a fitting legacy. So ... read more
