Hello everyone! Believe it or not, today was my favorite day yet. We took a trip with Care Corps to see more of their influence in action. We loaded into two vans and took off out of the city of Ayacucho into the countryside. First of all, the roads in Ayacucho are not great, to say the least. Often, you are riding on a small, two lane road a foot from the side of a huge cliff. But the scenery is so beautiful, you almost forget to be scared! We drove and drove and drove, and just when i thought the road couldn´t get any smaller or bumpier, it did. We went on roads in those vans that I would be afraid to drive Ian´s truck on. It was certainly an adventure! The first stop we ... read more

Oh my gosh! I wasn´t going to write in my journal today, but I was reading all of your wonderful comments and had to respond! Thank you so much! I am still having a great time in Ayacucho. It´s actually starting to feel like home more and more. We are teaming up with Care Corp and seeing how they work with people living in poverty. They have many programs all over Peru to help bring money into the economy. We hiked up a mountain today through a ¨neighborhood¨to visit local artist. These people make their home their studio. We visited weavers and stone carvers. They sell their products for next to nothing. CARE is trying to find ways for them to market their work to bring in more money. Again, I am inspired with the talent ... read more

Today I decided to go to the nursing home to help out another girl named Sue(she´s from England). It was truly wonderful to do massage for the women in the nursing home. Sue and I did hand massages. For some bizarre reason I brought 6 or 7 little bottles of lotion with me to Peru. They are small so I guess I figured I didn´t want to run out so I brouht lots of them. Well it came in handy today. (must have been some higher power telling me to bring so much lotion) The women are so full of life and their spirit is heartwarming. When I started massaging their hands, they massaged mine as well, wanting to share the lotion with me. It was so sweet. When I finished mostly all of them kissed ... read more

Today I was supposed to go to the Nero Street drop in center. This is a place for street vendor children to stop in a get a warm meal and to do their homework. I ended up going back to the orphanage beause the drop in center was closed. Alyson, Nigel and I first helped out in the kitchen, which was enjoyable. Some of the boys worked with us, but not all of them so we got a chance for some one on one with a few. It was great. The women in the kitchen are very sweet. I loved starting their today. It was a good way to ease into the day. We then helped some of the boys with homework and played frisbee and futbol. Tomorrow I will be going to work in the ... read more

Hola amigos! I just wrote a very long entry, and when I tried to add photos to the travelblog, everything froze and I lost it all! So here it goes again. I am still having a great time in Ayacucho! I went to my job placement yesterday at the wawa wasi. It was not what I imagined, but not in a bad way. There are several of these daycares located outside of town in a very poor area. They are run by the woman who lives in the house. Everyday women in the community will drop their children off before they work. My wawa wasi is run by a woman named Julia. She doesn’t speak any English, so when I was dropped off, we spent several minutes staring at each other. Finally I took out my ... read more

Well my life living at just over 9,000 ft above sea level is going great! Despite the fact that I am fighting one hell of a cold. I’ve done lots since my last update. I’ve spent two days at the Santa Elena clinic, attended several meeting to discuss poverty issues in Peru and how the Care Corps is tackling this enormous undertaking, shopped, ate like a Queen, and made some great new fiends. This morning on my way to the health clinic a group of us stopped off at a school in a very poor district and gave the kids the school supplies that I brought down. They organized them into lines according to their classes. I was surprised at how well the behaved. Marisol, our house coordinator, explained who I was and what I was ... read more

Hi Everyone, Today was my first day at the orphanage. I was with two other people, a couple from New Zealand, named Alyson and Nigel. They are great. We entered the orphanage and walked into a room to be greeted my lots of boys working on their homework. We helped them a bit, but some didn´t have any homework, so we did some English lessons. We had so much fun. After an hour of that, we played futbol (soccer). It was very fun and quite a work out. The kids are great. I am happy to be here. After lunch, we had a meeting and a lecture about Care Corps. and their involvement in Ayacucho. We brainstormed the problems we each saw in our placements and some solutions. The Care Corps. director will take the info ... read more

Buenos dias! The day started with breakfast and went into our first meeting with the program director, Rudy. He explained a bit about the history of Ayacucho and then we went to visit some work sites. The first site we visited was the URPI orphanage. It is close to where we live. It is a boys orphanage ages 6-16. This is one of my work sites so I was glad to see it. The boys were so happy to see us. They were anxious to chat with us and pose for pictures. It was unbelieveably heartwarming to se their smiles and feel their arms around you. I know I will love it here. The second site was a soup kitchen. It was very small, but warm and inviting. The women were cooking when we arrived, but ... read more

Hola! I made it safe and sound! The flight was long, but well worth it! Ayacucho is like no place I have ever seen. I imagine it is a lot like Mexico but smaller. It is very dusty. The roads are paved, but extremely bumpy with holes in them the size of cars. The buildings that line the streets are like brick skeletons and sometime only have a curtain for a door. The people are freindly and very curious about us. We are the only white people around. The children yell for the ¨gringas¨and laugh when we ask them questions in Spanish. Speaking of children, I am in love with them! They are so thirsy for our attention and love to have their pictures taken. So I will have a lot of photos of kids when ... read more

My first full day in Ayacucho so far has consisted of an orientation of the CCS program and a tour of the locations that they serve in town. We went to a boy’s home, a soup kitchen, Santa Elena health clinic, a school, and a prison. The boy’s home is a place were boys from the age of 5-18 live. They are mostly boys whose family can not afford to take care of them. They have a very nice place to live and go to school. It is very clean and they seem really happy. The boys got all excited when we showed up. I think that they really enjoy the time they get to spend with volunteers playing and working on their English. The soup kitchen is in a extremely poor neighborhood. They provide breakfast ... read more
