Suzanne here... More lovely scenery made the five hour journey from Cabanaconde pass quickly, and we saw loads of wild vicunas (much like llamas). However as we neared Ariquipa the landscape changed. Suddenly everything was more built-up and industrial. I could quite easily have fled back to Colca. We arrived at Terminal Terrestre, inconveniently out of town. But at least it meant we could buy our onward bus tickets to Puno. Once this was achieved we agreed a price of 10 soles with a taxi driver (the colectivos all looked rammed) and despite the terrible traffic we were soon at our hotel. Hotel Bubamara was a plain, locked door with a small sign to indicate we were in the right place. We rang the bell and were welcomed inside. It was actually much roomier than we ... read more

David here... First of all, I must apologise for the amount of photos and panoramas in this blog. It's not my fault. The Colca Canyon area around Cabanaconde is just so beautiful. The photos don't even do the area justice. Of all the beautiful places we've been in our travels; Switzerland, Austria, Middlesborough, Peru is up there as one of the most stunning places we've ever been, if not the most beautiful. The trip from Yanque to Cabanaconde wasn't as easy as we thought. We had read, and were told, that buses pass through the main plaza all day. Well, the 09:30 bus we expected never turned up and after 45 minutes of waiting we asked in a local shop. We were told that the next bus was at 15:00 ish. As we were debating what ... read more

Suzanne here... The colectivo from Chivay dropped us off in Yanque's Plaza de Armes at about 10am. It was a bit early to check into our B&B. Yanque is tiny, but luckily we found one cafe, Coca, near the church. It was a nice place so we stayed for a couple of cappuccino's each. By the time we'd finished it was a more reasonable check in time and we got to Miskiwasi B&B at 11.30am. First impressions were good - a lovely garden and nice resturant area. Our room wasn't quite ready but after a bit of rushing around we were shown inside. We'd been given the family room, which had a massive bed on the ground floor as well as a second level with two more double beds. Not much use to us, but nice ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Chivay March 23rd 2017

David here... Our next stop in Peru was Chivay. When we looked at places we wanted to go, Colca Canyon was high on the list, next after the Sacred Valley. On a map it looked a straightforward onward journey south from Cusco. However our research showed that the route was not 'normal' in Peru, most people going the other way round or going via Arequipa, which would mean back tracking. We found one tour company - 4M Express - that offered the Cusco to Chivay route on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (with the Chivay to Cusco journey going on Monday, Wednesday and Friday). We booked the journey with 4M about a month in advance at a cost of $60 each, so quite expensive. But this was a tour and not direct transport so you got ... read more

Feb. 24th, arrived in Ica around 7pm and jumped in a tuktuk to Huacachina. It was about a 10 minute ride and pretty dark. I stayed at a hostel with a pool and also a very good bathroom. At sunrise I took a walk around the lake or pond really. The town is surrounded by huge sand dunes. Its like a movie set or something. It was hot and explored the tiny town. Took a sand dune buggy trip at sundown. There was some romping around and we hit jumps in the buggy I was pretty scared, and thinking about how my friends husband Jens had almost died doing this and what the hell was I thinking. Then we stopped to ride snowboards down some big dunes.I did the first set but skipped the second set ... read more

Hits everyone! Sorry it's been a while but he internet hasn't been all that fab. So after we last touched base we went sand boarding in the dessert! What a laugh that was. Sand everywhere!!!!! We also got chance to stop off at a few other places of historical significance to the incas and we're really starting to get a feel for the place. After that we got footed it onto the night bus to get us to Aeroquipa in the morning. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and slept the whole way! Once in Aeroqipa the day was ours to explore. We went to the maker and brought loads of different fruits to try (they were mostly delicious) aaaannnnnddd I got myself some walking boots for An absolute bargain!! You ... read more

Arequipa is a beautiful city built in volcanic rocks. I just walked around to admire the beautiful architecture with mountainous backgrounds that looked like paintings, really did not look real! There is a very high volcano called Misti that is also visible from the city, it goes as high as 6500m at least so I did not hike that, I have reached my limit hehe. The only museum I did was one that shows how the llama wool is extracted, sorted and turned into jumpers, it was basic but interesting. This stop was mainly a resting time before reaching Chile. (where I am writing from already)... read more

From Puno we took a less glamorous local bus to Arequipa, just over 6 hours away. Just 4 of us left now - the 3 girls I met on the plane from Lima to Cusco. Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru after Lima. We hadn't had lunch so ended up in an English pub a few doors from the hotel. 4pm lunch of Andean pie (kind of like quinoa lasagne) which was great, along with 6 or 7 rounds of drinks to commiserate the shrinking of our group. Colin, our South African waiter let us take over the music and we had a grand old time. Later we did our city orientation walk and had a late pizza dinner. Italian food is huge in Peru. Early start for Chivay and Coporaque, our stopover near ... read more

Floating islands and Puno Crossing the border into Peru was really straightforward, once we finally left a busy Copacabana in Bolivia. We headed for Puno, maybe not the most attractive of cities but great food and of course has the Uros islands, floating islands. Which we headed straight out to the following day. The floating islands are made with blocks of soil which are tied together with rope and held down with sticks. The top of the islands are layered with reeds which are from the island and have to be replaced every two weeks. Standing on the islands is interesting as they are pretty bouncy, with the reeds having to be around 2m in thickness. We were shown round 2 of the islands and visited people's homes, they even showed us how to eat the ... read more

Leaving Arequipa we drove up and up and up onto the Peruvian high altiplano eventually reaching a high point of 15917ft. We passed through many small villages on the way, dusty and poor-looking houses and huts. Work is difficult to find - although there are gold & silver mines, a cement factory and farming. The landscape changes as we ascend from dry bushes & tall grasses to cacti and finally on the altiplano rocks, dust and small clumps of dry grass which extends into the far distance in all directions. There were several volcanos in the distance, many covered with snow while Mount Sabancaya, the active volcano in the area, billows smoke day and night. The air was thin, it was cool but the sky was blue and the sun burningly strong. We headed slightly downhill ... read more
