Huaraz is the base for many adventures within the Cordillera mountain range, some of the highest and snow capped mountains in Peru. The city of Huaraz is not so pretty, but it´s people give it a certain charm and vibrant personality. And it´s the first time i have seen other white people in a while! After finding the California Cafe (run by a real Cali native) and a yummy breakfast of pancakes, coffee and fresh yogurt with honey, I was ready to take in the city and book my adventures. trekking is the main attraction, but since the trekking is long (7 to 10 days) and often includes some ice climbing, I decided to stick with my original plan and do some rock climbing. My guide and I took off for the town of Monterey and ... read more

Hello friends and family, We left Cajamarca during the day and headed to the coast. One thing about these roads in Peru, they all follow a river down the mountain valleys. The coast was overcast and quite dismal, especially after being around some impressive mountain ranges and awesome vistas. We stopped only for a moment in Trujillo, then caught another bus to Chimbote. From Chimbote (where we stayed one night), we would be heading up back into the mountains to Huarez. Chimbote was quite the nondescript town. Spent an uneventful night there with a decent meal, then headed to the bus station again. Robin & I were still traveling with Tammy and Terry of Secret o´Life fame. The ride up into the Cordillera Blanca mountain range was spectacular. It´s somewhat funny now, since we have been ... read more

So we woke up hungover and realised that the night before, whilst somewhat pissed, we had booked a four day rock climbing course. This had seemed like a good idea at the time. In fact it was an awesome idea, I actually learned loads and really enjoyed it. Just not so much that first morning. Our guide taught us everything from the very basics to setting up your own systems for a multi pitch climb, lead climbing bolted routs, putting your own gear in a wall and some rescue techniques. I learned to trust knots and systems I´d set up myself from scratch and put all my weight on a few little metal blobs I´d just wedged in cracks in the wall. This is less dangerous than it sounds. Our guide Horguay was excellent, and incredibly ... read more

So we´d decided on the Santa Cruz trek, the most popular and supposedly most beautiful. It takes four days and reaches an altitude of 4800m, which is considerably higher than I´d ever been. In Huaraz, at 3000m, walking upstairs rapidly felt like quite the physical challange, so I was curious to find out what if anything this kind of altitude would do to me. On day one we got off to a bad start by setting our alarm for 6pm not 6am. Schoolboy error. I had one of those moments when you instantly wakeup bolt upright in bed because your inner "oh shit" alarm has informed you that you´re in trouble. We were only 10 minutes late, but it meant we left in a rush and half asleep, which is my excuse for what happened next. ... read more

After leaving La Paz, it was time for another day in Lima whilst waiting for my penultimate bus ride. I managed to get well and truly re-aquainted with black gold, as en-route I remembered they had Starbucks in Lima. Normally i'd rather lick my own arsehole than put money in the pocket of the man (ie global chains) but when you've been drinking instant coffee and some dubious black syrup crap they consider to be coffee for 8 months, little luxuries like this are forgiveable! So anyhoo, I headed to the bus terminal for about 8ish to catch my 9pm bus. It's always good when you're about to get out of the taxi and the driver tells you to hurry inside as it's a very dangerous area! Well im not one to head advice easily and ... read more

Day 61 Had a well deserved lie in and pottered out for breakfast. Wandered around Cusco abit and then decided we would treat ourselves to a massage (4 pound each for an hour), luxury. Watched some of the football and then went for a late lunch in preparation for our night bus to Ica. Day 62 Arrived in Ica nice and early and got a taxi to Huacachina, a little oasis town out in the desert. Explored the whole town in about 10 minutes. Pretty much just a few hotels and restaurants. We considered climbing up ne of the sand dunes but sacked it off because the legs were still tired. In the afternoon we went on a sand boarding and dune buggying tour which is the main reason we came to Huacachina. Was lots of ... read more

Changing plans This time I actually decided to not do a trek/climb! I arrived in Huaraz after a nightbus marathon from Cusco. Three nights in a row and Arequipa and Nazca visited in between. I was heading for Huaraz to climb the mountain Alpamayo, who I heard was a beautiful mountain. And since I climbed Pequeño Alpamayo in Bolivia, I was thinking; "I have to climb the big brother as well!" ; ) But after one day of searching for a climbing partner/guide/logistics, I gave up. It was too expensive to do it alone, with a guide, hire the gear I needed and so on. I met some friendly Americans who just arrived to climb for one month, and I decided to do like they did; come back later with a climbingpartner/friend and dedicate the trip ... read more

So tomorrow will be the last bus ride that I will be taking in South America...and although I am more than relieved for that fact, it also means that I am near the end of the trip. Lima, the final destination will be reached on Sunday, then it is just a matter of days until the flight back home. The trip has been amazing, and has gone by way to fast, but it will also be nice to be at home, sleeping in a familiar bed. As for the past couple of days, we just returned yesterday from the Santa Cruz Trek which was supposed to be a 4 day trek. We got to the trek, and decided after the first day, to walk about 2 hours more than what our guide book suggested to ... read more
