Today is my last day in Quito. Endings are bittersweet . . . I've had an incredible time traveling, but I am looking forward to being back in the US and seeing my family and friends for the holidays. This last week has been especially good since I am more comfortable with Quito and have really seen it come alive during the fiesta. We went to a soccer match and, despite rain and other logistical difficulties, the Quitenos spirits were as passionate as ever. Coming from the US, it seemed that there was an "anything goes" attitude . . vendors sell liquor and bottle rockets (I think I scared the people around me with mine!) . . . the group of dedicated fans who come to every Nacional game decked out in red can also be ... read more

The sun has finally come out! It has been cloudy and over cast since I got here and (I can´t believe I am saying this) cold. It has been about 15-20c but the wind has made it colder. Everyone is laughing at me, being from Canada and finding it cold. I am beginning to settle in nicely here. I have been able to discuss what my job will be and basically, for those of you who remember the Love Boat, i am Julie McCoy! Pretty easy job. Just making sure that the guests are enjoying their stay, that they know about the day trips and encouraging them to go. If I want to, which I do, I also get to go on all of these trips. I know, tough job but someone has to do it! ... read more

Got to the hostel in Quito in time for rum and coke night. Oh sweet lord it was messy. We ended up clubbing, not gettting in till half 4 - officially over 24 hours awake! Struggled to cope with the subsequent hangover. Saturday was my one year anniversary with Al, so, unable to celebrate with said boyfriend, I celebrated by treating myself to a nice curry - my very first meal alone in a restaurant (pretty pointless eating in a restuarant alone - you forget how social eating really is). The Quito festivals were getting into full swing, celebrating the foundation of the city or something like that. Open sided trucks, or chivas, drove through the streets, fulls of people dancing and singing and blowing whistles along with bands perched precariously on the roof. Sunday i ... read more

So. It's the third of December. Where, you may ask, have I been since November 9? And how did my jungle adventures turn out? Internet access has been, as previously mentioned, spotty, and I am having a difficult time catching up on my blogs. But I'm sure you'll forgive me, since my blog-absence has not been due to slackerness but to busyness. :) But since I'm about to be out of touch for another week I thought I'd post a brief update on my recent travels. So without further adieu . . . November 11 was our last day in the jungle (sadness and despair). We spent the night in Lago Agrio, and caught an early morning bus the next day for Tena (another jungle town). We spent the next two nights in Tena (one more ... read more

So i caught the bus to Gauyaquil and on to Montañita on Saturday morning, Montañita is such a cool place, full of gringo hippies and surfers. Found my hostel, the sister of Centro del Mundo in Quito - a four storey timber building right on the beach. Very back to basics, my walls had gaps between the boards, and no glass in the window, just a scrap of material: i tried to ignore the animals. Met some nice Canadian guys, Jesse, Tyson and Dev plus Andy from Portsmouth. Went out to eat some seafood then chilled in the boys room before taking to my bed with bad stomach pains. I spewed and had the runs all night - not so good on my first day. Next day i'd booked a surf lesson, and was pretty tempted ... read more

After all of the excitement of the Day of the Dead celebrations Kate and I went to the Saquisili markets that the Lonely Planet had hyped as "South America's most important indigenous markets". It didn't live up to expectations at all and was just a market like any other. Apparently, the animal market was interesting but by the time we got there, there were only a couple of piglets left. The highlight was a man selling goats milk. All that he had in tow was the goat. The original plan was to move on to Chugchillan and spend a few days around Lago Quilotoa but posters were plastered around Latacunga, advertising 'La Mama Negra' celebrations on the Saturday. We decided to stick around for the party but this meant an extra day in one of the ... read more

So I finally made it into the waves yesterday, and failed miserably I might add, but today I am getting some more help. I am slowly picking up some more spanish words and today have made arrangements to practice my spanish with someone. In the meantime, I am "conducting" my own spanish/english lessons. These lesson consist of me going into the kitchen with two of the guys that work there and holding up items, sayning the name in english, they say it in spanish and we both repeat it. Obviously, these guys are trying to learn english. This morning we covered butter, marmalade and the ingredients for pancakes. It is always good for a laugh! Yesterday, after the attempt at surfing and meeting a few of the locals, I walked up the road to a look ... read more

So, after two weeks in Quito, 20 hours of Spanish lessons and a nasty case of that condition that you expect to get at least once when you travel, we were off to the Galapagos Islands. At 5:45am our alarm clock went off rousing us into an unwilling state of consciousness - it's a very uncivilised time of the morning after all. We had arranged to share a taxi with another girl from the hostel who was going to the airport at the same time. Sounded like a good idea at the time. Problem was, when it came to getting in the taxi, Crystal (we speculated that her surname might be "Ball" or "Maze") was nowhere to be seen. I ran around the hostel looking for her, but failing to find her instead got in the ... read more

If you are blonde and a girl, be prepared to be stared at constantly, have comments and blokes approach you all the time and even get followed or flashed at in places! This place is INCREDIBLY conservative and pretty hard core on the Catholic religion. Rio Tomebamba divides Cuenca and has, along its banks, old colonial buildings plus washerwomen laying out their clothes. Also, not in the guidebooks, kids sniffing glue and a whole load of perverts. The markets here are all pretty much centrally located. And there are loads of them of various sizes. Markets for fruit and veg, markets for flowers, markets for crafts and, of course, markets for the famous Panama hat. Parque Nacional Cajas A huge park (28,800 hectare) with loads of lakes, mountains to climb and no-one else around. We did ... read more

I had never heard of Guayaquil before I planned my trip to Ecuador. Apparently, its the country's biggest city and known for nothing but poverty and violent crime. I thought I’d check it out. First, I must thank my lovely hostess, Abby Ames, who allowed me to tag along with her for five days. Abby works at some school for the filthy rich in Guayaquil, and it just so happened that my arrival coincided with the school’s Thanksgiving Day feast. I put on my nicest/cleanest clothes (and no, I didn’t wear the shirt that says “I dropped my beer and I can’t pick it up”) and accompanied Abby to the party. I can’t say it was all that great; they ran out of food before I could get seconds. I think I even saw little kids ... read more
