South America » Ecuador » Centre » Riobamba December 21st 2005

Riobamba probably deserves more investigation than I was willing to give it based on first impressions, so apologies to anyone who went there and loved it. Initially we'd planned to spend a couple of days there, we're not fond of turning up to a place and setting straight off the next day. Might be laziness but I prefer to think of it as giving every place a fair chance. Anyway we're on holiday!! Riobamba didn't capture either of our imaginations though, and as such we decided to take the much lauded train around the Devil's Nose (Nariz del Diablo) and carry on south directly. The train around Nariz del Diablo was apparently something of an engineering feat although these days is a tourist attraction and nothing more. You can't travel anywhere in Ecuador by train other ... read more

Well everyone, I have made it here to Quito safe and sound. I arrived yesterday afternoon, and I was incredibly worn-out. My flight left JFK at 5:30 in the morning and was full of screaming babies. Yesterday I didn't do much, just found some food and sacked out in my hotel room. The hotel (La Posada del Maples) is nice and comfy with free internet and breakfast (which was pretty good, it sure trumped the typical motel 6 fare). My room overlooks the tiny courtyard which has a mimosa-like tree in it that is constantly filled with hummingbirds (colibris) and doves (palomas). If only I could figure out which species of the 150 colibris y palomas these are! I have positively identified one bird, the rufous-crowned sparrow which is fairly common on the vegetation-lined side streets. ... read more

by caroline Day12 today we fly to the galapagos, the flight takes us via Guayquil it only a 20 min stop just time for a coffee. On our way to baltra the pilot takes a short detour and flies us passed the worlds biggest vocano. Baltra is a small military airport, its a 5 min bus ride to a ferry across to Santa Cruz then an hour bus to Puerto Ayora where we join our boat. Lunch was served as soon as we arrived. 3.00pm we had a tour around the Darwin centre home to some giant tortoises and iguanas. Back on on board at 6.00pm. After dinner we thought we´d have a few drinks but it seems the crew had abandoned ship, so we had to make do with coffee, and was in bed at ... read more

My last day in Ecuador. This past week has been a bit surreal; it's so hard to believe that three months are nearly over. Even though I know that this time tomorrow we'll be on our way home I still can't believe it. Back in September December seemed (as it always does) so far away. There were moments then when I wasn't sure how I was going to survive this trip. Now, in spite of the ever-present language barrier, I carry myself through Ecuador with a great deal more confidence. (Take that statement with a grain of salt, though. When you have zero confidence to begin with, there's -- hopefully -- only one direction to go.) Back in September it seemed, also, that once December hit I would be completely ready to head back to the ... read more

We arrived at Baños without a hitch, which is a good thing given that the Foreign Office suggest that you don't go there. What do they know, eh? It turns out that Baños is a nice, chilled little tourist town nestling between a big grumbly volcano and some pretty mountains. All good really, as we weren't in the mood for ANY walking after our Quilotoa adventure. Not for a couple of days anyway. We plodded around town and checked into the very welcoming Hostal Llantoventos, on a hill overlooking Baños. I have no idea how we failed to notice the steepness of the hill it was on whilst carrying all of our stuff, but fail to notice we did. That came later when walking home from the pub. In Baños though we felt instantly at home. ... read more

We'd climbed a volcano. So what next? The Quilotoa loop... From Latacunga there's a fairly well trodden path around a series of villages known as the Quilotoa loop. Quilotoa itself is a stunning emerald green lake in the caldera of an extinct volcano at around 3800m above sea level. It takes between 2-3 days to do the loop, and buoyed by relative sucess at Cotopaxi we decided to give it a look. The first leg of the journey was a straightforward taxi journey to Saquisili (you see why we were having trouble with the pronounciation?!) along with Rein & Char, two of the folks that we had climbed Cotopaxi with. Saquisili is the site of a colourful Indian market every Thursday, which was why we started the loop there. Although we had already seen the market ... read more

Okay, I realize this isn't a Galápagos blog, but I promise it's coming! It's going to take me awhile to finish writing it (I don't want to leave anything out), and it may not even be posted until I get back to the States. But I had an incredible time and can't wait to share it with all of you. :) In other news . . . I returned to the mainland on Sunday, December 11. I had received word from Brenna and Ami that they were going to be in Baños that evening, so I decided to hop on a Baños-bound bus once I got to Guayaquil. Two of my fellow Cormorant passengers, Chris and Betsy, decided to join me. (They were planning on spending a night in Guayaquil and then heading to Baños the ... read more

Yesterday we finally managed to break free of the gravitational pull of Quito and the Secret Garden hostel and make our way south to Latacunga. It's nice to be out of the big city, the noise and pollution were starting to get on our nerves. Latacunga is a completely different kettle of fish. True, they also have a severe vehicle emmisions problem here, but since there are less cars and trucks it's less of a headache. Also it's much safer here which is always nice. We travelled to these parts for two reasons: to have a climb of the tallest active volcano in the world (Cotopaxi - a whopping 5897m high and about 29km from here) and to visit a series of villages and another volcanic crater nearby, collectively known as the Quilotoa circuit. Tomorrow we ... read more
