It would be nice to have statisticians around sometimes to tell me the probability of my life's happenings. I'm pretty sure they would would say that what happened to Jacob's camera was imposible. One of the last things Jacob did before he left Yanayacu was paint a column at the station. His design was beautiful, but he got paint all over himself and his things in the process. Once he was finished with his column he left for Quito. While there he took a day trip to Otavalo, the famous market. And on the bus ride there he had his camera stolen. By the time I got to Quito Jacob had decided that he was going to go to the black market to find his camera. He had talked with some people and he had some ... read more

My last night in Lima coincided with the final world cup qualifier for Germany 2006, played in Sydney between Australia and Uruguay. I watched the first game in Huacachina with a Uruguayan girl I met on an earlier tour, it was great fun and a predictable result. Of course I was extremely gracious to her in defeat. The return game started at 4:00am local time, and by coincidence there were up to ten Australians at the hostel in Lima. The place was absolutely jumping around 7:00am when Australia slotted home the winning penalty, as we started hopping about like mad kangaroos to celebrate a terrific achievement for Australian football. Congratulations to the mighty Socceroos and all the best for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Apologies for the free plug regarding our football team, but the ... read more

So, I made it!! Everything went like clockwork until I hit Ecuador. Turns out that we had a slight mix up with arrival times. Not to worry though I spent the night in the airport....where knew it was safe and early the next morning I made friends with a guy....rather flamboyant I mught add but he was increddibly helpful. He was awaiting for a friend to arrive but once he visited with his friend he and his brother (who drives a private luxury taxi) got me to the bus station and on the right bus. So, now i have a place to stay in the city and a private car at my disposal! Once i got to Montinata I hiked down the baeach (1KM) with my packs(which are way too full)....and by the way cheryl I ... read more

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! While I did not celebrate it here, I was able to watch Texas defeat Texas A&M, courtesy of the cable TV in the gym!! Hook 'em, Horns! Surprisingly, I only have a week remaining in my travels. What have I been up to? My second weekend, we went to the equator, know as Mitad del Mundo, or middle of the world. There's a sizeable monument erected by the French to mark the equator, but the French got it wrong. The actual equator as indicated by GPS is about 200 metres north of the monument. Once again, I was reminded of high school chemistry class . . . one of the demonstrations performed relates to the Corealis effect. The museum at the real equator has a portable sink to show ... read more

We´ve just arrived in Baños having spent our first week in South America. Our first couple of days were spent exploring Quito where we stayed at a lovely little hostel in the new town where no-one spoke a word of English. Despite being somewhat thrown in at the deep end, we really enjoyed our time in Quito. The people were all very friendly, smiley and relaxed, except when they got behind the wheel, road rage is rife. Quito is renowned for its beautiful architecture, so much so that we spent the first day wandering around the Basilica thinking it was the cathedral. We eventually found the real cathedral and the old town and celebrated with a meal at a strange art-deco restaurant - pork with banana and popcorn? On the Sunday we met up with our ... read more

After booking our trip to the Galapagos Islands (more on that in my next entry) we decided to spend some of the intervening days somewhere other than Quito. There's nothing wrong with Quito in my opinion, although the pollution, hustle and the potential for petty crime can wear you down after a while. We had after all been there for almost two weeks. With all of this in mind we decided to spend a few days in the market town of Otavalo, in the north of Ecuador. Most people go to Otavalo for the market. Emma and I went there to see what it was like, the market being a secondary attraction as neither of us are natural shoppers by any stretch of the imagination. The weekend market (said to be the biggest in South America) ... read more

Hola amigos! First things first. I´m still alive mum! As the title suggests i´ve made it to the jungle. I´ve just finished the first two weeks teaching the kids in the jungle. However its not quite the proper jungle as you can get to places by car and bus. But all being well and if we can get enough people we´ll be off to the deep jungle in the middle of December. To bring you guys up to date. I finished spanish school a couple of weeks ago. Came straight to Baños after to meet up with Marcelo aka Jesus, the guy whos running the fundation in the jungle. He is a cool guy and showed me on the first day a waterfall. After that day it was straight to work. The grounds are amazing wth ... read more

Wednesday I sunbathed in the morning, getting a bit burned, then hired bikes with Leoni and Karin; two Dutch girls, plus Jay from London: all three had been part of the mass exodus from Quito. We were joined by David, a 30 year old from Israel, and Jean-Phillipe, a boy from France. We cycled for hours, up and down hills on a route out of town that followed the waterfalls. It was absolutely exhasting, my poor legs took a hell of a lot of punishment, but the scenery: gorgeous green mountains and smoking volcanoes, made up for the pain. We stopped regularly to see the falls and take pictures; one of the waterfalls even tumbled down onto our path, so hot and sweaty, we stripped off and stood under it - lovely! Got to the end ... read more

There are few if any volcanoes in Teddington. In Ecuador, however, they are very popular. Almost as popular as shops selling religious tat and taxis that try to kill you. The inhabitants of Baños live right underneath a 16,500 footer called Tungurahua that began erupting in 1999. The government evacuated the town and surrounding area, fearing the worst. By January, nothing had happened, so the townsfolk, by now becoming unpopular with the relatives they had been staying with, forced their way past the military blockades and returned to their homes. When they got there most of them found their homes and businesses had been looted. ¿Tough, eh? Another interesting volcano fact: the Galapagos Islands are composed entirely of them. One island alone (Isabela) has five, and each one is host to a different subspecies of giant ... read more

On that Thursday night we had an impromptu card and drinking sesh, got ever so slightly drunk, couldnt stop laughing all night, great fun! Friday i did NOTHING. Had a fruitless trip to the bus station to attempt to get tickets for Coca or Baños in advance, but wasnt allowed. I was scared to death there, went on my own and the taxi man dropped me off at this underpass. It was dark and deserted and these men started calling to me from behind dark doors...not a good experience. Anyway, that night rum and coke was the usual chaos. Saturday we had a ridiculously early start to go on a day trip to Otavalo market. I went with Andy and Steve, plus Mel and her mum, and a few new faces from the hostel. We visited ... read more
