I'm back in Quito for a day and half. Nothing much exciting is happening. Here are some more pictures! A few people have asked about the butterfly farm, so I have included some more photos from there. They raise the butterflies (maybe 20 - 30 species) from egg to caterpillar to butterfly. There are separate areas for the different stages. They keep about half of the adult butterflies in a net-enclosed garden and release the other half into the forest. Uncle David - I'm not sure about your question, because most of the butterflies that I saw that were dying looked really ragged (like the Owl Eye on the right in the photo with the banana). I'm sure it's possible that they could have collected enough good-looking ones, though. I hope you enjoy the pictures. I'm ... read more

Having raced across Colombia in three days we just made it in time to Otavalo to see in the New Year. If you like crafty things you can buy them in numbers in Ecuador where there is a huge market in the Plaza de Ponchos (Square of Ponchos). But it is otherwise a lovely place. You an walk among the mountains and visit a waterfall in a eucalyptus grove. The lakes are among the most beautiful in South America, although our photos don´t really do the countryside justice. Silvie thinks our photos represent the beauty there quite well, and I´m being cynical or falsely modest. The Otavaleño culture is unique. They managed to maintain a distinct identity despite the Incas, and then teh Spanish. They also speak a more antique version of Quechua. They are also ... read more

Hola Everyone Hope you have all recovered from the hangovers of new year and everyone enjoyed their christmas, where ever you might be. When I last wrote I basically had just finished teaching at the schools, however I had two more days at the school where there was a big party for the kids with them meeting santa and getting lots of sweets and toys. Nice way to finish my time. After one last carol in spamish by the kids I was off in the back of a truck to go deep into the Jungle near the colombia border. Once everything was organised in Baños we set off on the trip. Starting with a 15 hour bus journey to Lago Agrio which means sour lake. This is the last city before the Ecuadorian amazon jungle. After ... read more

Hey everybody, sorry I haven't written in a while. The internet connection is a little sketchy so I'm just going to give a brief update and then, what you've all been waiting for, pictures! So, in brief, on Christmas I went to Chachimbiro hot springs, but I didn't actually go in. I spent the entire time looking for birds. It was so fun that I decided to switch the focus of my trip. I had thought that I didn't want to spend all my time chasing after birds because I'm going to do that for three months. The next day I went back to Quito and spent the day getting my clothes washed and all that good stuff. The next day I traveled to Mindo, a tiny town that is a birding mecca. I've been here ... read more

So I have now been here for about a month. Amongst all of the new experiences have been a few lessons too. In my opinion, here are a few of the more memorable ones.... ...it is possible to determine which part of your anatomy remains exposed throughout the the night by the misquito bites. Currently I have "patches" on various parts of my body that look like I am suffering from a case of the measles. I figure between the bites and the tanlines eventually everything will blend together and I will become one uniform color, other than glow in the dark white! ...just because you was all of your clothes on a dark colors setting, to avoid the running of dye, does not mean that that you should do it every where. Apparently, here dark ... read more

Recipe: 1 Christmas Turkey Preheat water over open fire. Chase after and catch 1 medium sized turkey. Pour 1 cup cane alcohol down caught turkey's throat. Once turkey is sufficiently intoxicated have two helpers hold the turkey as you snap its neck (with a twisting of both hands). Once turkey is dead put it in preheated water and remove feathers. Burn the remaining feathers off over the kitchen fire. Open the turkey and remove it's organs. Rinse the turkey in the rain bucket and chop it into portions. Grill and serve. ---------------------------- When Jose said we were going to spend some time with the farming community up the road and that we would be back by 7:30 I thought he meant PM not AM. It was a really lovely Christmas Eve. The few remaining at Yanayacu, ... read more

Famous for it´s peaceful vibe and the populations long lifespan, this place is supposed to be perfect for re-charging your batteries. For me, it proved to be the exact opposite. The village is small and there´s little to do except hang out in one of the cafes or walk up Cerro Mandango (named the walk of the two crosses) for panoramic views over the valley. There is an Italian proverb that says: "All the world is going to die, perhaps even I too. " I now know death can be just a matter of being in the wrong place. We had a day to kill before taking the night bus onwards towards Peru. And, as I never like to sit still for too long, we decided to do the mirador walk, which takes takes roughly an ... read more

After spending a day in Quito, we went to Galapagos a few days before our tour started so we could do some diving and get a feel of the place. We flew to Santa Cruz on the 9th December, and went to Puerto Ayora, the main town on the Galapagos Islands. It was a very nice small town with a harbour a lots of boats. Our hotel was noisy so we moved the next day to one with a view of the sea, and from our balcony we could see some great new neighbours: some sea lions on a pier, a blue footed booby, marine iguanas (the only iguanas that swim!) and frigate birds flying across the sky circling on the look out for food (they survive by stealing food off other birds, and cant fish ... read more

I left Quito on Thursday for Otavalo. It’s very nice here, I like it much more than Quito. Otavalo is a medium-sized town, but I am here primarily because today is market day! They say this is the largest indigenous market in South America. I can’t say whether or not that is true, but it is certainly big. There were many craft stalls open yesterday as well, so I actually did some shopping then, which turned out to be a smart decision, because the prices were much higher today. There is some haggling involved which was kind of hard for me. Just tell me what it’s worth and that’s what I’ll pay, but I guess it doesn’t work like that here (or honestly anywhere). Besides the craft market, which is primarily for tourists, there is a ... read more

After not doing Riobamba justice (didn't really look around that much) you would have thought that Emma and I would do a better job of seeing Cuenca, Ecuador's third largest city. Unfortunately the laziness hadn't yet worn off so we really only saw a portion of the city and didn't explore as we normally would. That said, we immediately felt at home in Cuenca. Despite the warnings in the guidebook that care should be taken after 10pm, we didn't once feel threatened, which wasn't true of Riobamba. We were in Cuenca as we'd heard that the Christmas processions were something worth seeing, and we didn't want to be travelling over Christmas, despite my "bah humbug" tendencies! Cuenca lived up to our expectations and then some.... We'd arrived with the same crew that we'd been in Ingapirca ... read more
