Under most circumstances I love the rain. I love the first rain that comes after three months' drought, when the land is so parched it has forgotten a life with water and given in to its arid world, and when those first drops hit the ground the earth heaves a sigh of relief and it feels as though the whole world is reborn. And I love the rain that is hardly a drizzle, that clings to spider webs and the ends of your eyelashes, and the rain that lashes against windowpanes while you are inside, warm and dry, a mug of tea in your hand and a book in your lap. I am fortunate, then, to be here during the rainy season. Most afternoons -- around 2 or 3 pm -- towering cumulus clouds form above ... read more

Basically we arrived in loads of time to Madrid airport to check in for flight to Quito, and this time they told us the flight was full and the best they could do was put us on standby and we would have to hope some losers didn´t show. Queue rage and lots of confrontation by Becky, in the end they offered us the option to fly to Bogota in Columbia, then connect there for Quito. In the end it was only two hours extra, and they paid us 300 euros each for the hassle which was cool. Also notched up another country on our itinerary, which was good, even tho it is the most dangerous country in the world and one of George Bushs´axis of evil!!! However, had a bit of a mare in Columbia as ... read more

¡Hola Chicos! Been in quito for about a week. First things first. The beers are massive and cheap. It costs about $1.50 for local brew. Started spanish school on mon. Realised i knew nothing but was able to pick a few words up. On the first day of school they sprang a surprise on me. Salsa lessons! We re all so crap, its pretty funny to watch. Im already sun burnt even with using ridiculously strong sun tan lotion. But its not that bad. School has been good but it seems like ive got the worst teacher, everyone has told me she only ever talks about money and death which should make for interesting conversation. The schools got 7 students at the moment. 2 english (inc me), 2 swiss, 2 swedes and an ozzie. Theyre all ... read more

The perils in developing a routine is that you inevitably begin to believe you know exactly what to expect in your day. Today -- like every other day -- my alarm went off promptly at 7:30. I pulled myself out of bed, dressed, ate a bowl of Krispie Rice, gathered my Spanish notebook and homework, and headed out the door. Unlike the previous few mornings, the sky was cloudy, and the volcano to the east of our apartment (Cayambe) -- which we often cannot see at all -- glowed amid the morning clouds. It appeared as though it were suspended in the air, just pausing near Quito before moving on. But in spite of the clouds and Cayambe, when I left the apartment I expected to see, smell and hear the same things I did every ... read more

Thousands of them came rushing towards me! Out of the corner of my eye I had seen them slowly creeping up to me, but now they were charging toward me, full speed! I was alone and my only hope was a desperate leap into the river. That's how it felt as it dawned on me that I was lost in the jungle. The forest surrounded me. I was fortunate; people knew where I was; I had 3 hours of daylight left; and if all else failed I could walk down the Cosanga River until I reached town (it would have taken me a day and a half). I was extra fortunate because after only thirty minutes Rafael came charging through the underbrush looking for me. Harold was back for a week before he left for 3 ... read more

Well, it finally happened -- late Thursday night Brenna, Ami and I came down with something. When we went to bed it looked as though Ami was the only sick one among us, (he had a really high fever), but at some point in the night I began to have very odd, vivid dreams and nausea. I went to my Spanish lesson in the morning anyway, which turned out to be a huge mistake as I spent most of the time ill and unable to concentrate. After four painful hours, I dragged myself home and crashed on the couch, where I slept on and off for the next five hours. Brenna and Ami both went to their afternoon classes (even though neither one felt well). For awhile there it seemed as though Brenna was in better ... read more

It's been a very intensive couple of weeks. I’ve done 10 days of Spanish classes, interspersed with two weekend trips. The Spanish has been hard work and very enjoyable. Unfortunately for you, dear reader it doesn't make for interesting travellers tales. I speak quite good French (I lived in France for a year) and this has both helped and hindered my Spanish. Compared with French, Spanish is similar; shares a lot of vocabulary and concepts, but has less complicated rules and fewer exceptions. Having one-to-one Spanish lessons has been fantastic! I have learned so much in such a short time! We even covered the whole of the Imperfect tense in just 15 minutes at the end of my last lesson. South America is cheap enough to make the one-to-one lessons feasible. Quito is a major centre ... read more

Recently I received a great email from my aunt Charissa. She responded to my language-barrier frustrations by pointing out that the reasons for my frustrations is that I am accustomed to communicating as an adult but am now reduced to the level of a 2 year old. (She also provided a great deal of encouragement, and seemed more confident than I in my abilities to pick up the language, which was good to hear.) I was reminded of her email today during my first Spanish lesson at Vida Verde. After my instructor and I had gone over the alphabet and some basic vocabulary, she pulled out a puzzle -- the kind with large pieces, designed especially for small hands -- with all the letters of the alphabet on it. Fortunately I was far more entertained than ... read more

The best part of our new neighborhood is the man who drives around with barrels of fruit in the back of his pick-up truck broadcasting his wares over a loudspeaker attached to the top of the truck. As soon as I hear him I dash from window to window, trying to figure out where he's coming from and what he has this time. I can't really understand what he's saying, (but it looked like he had a bunch of piñas this time), nor have I bought anything from him, but I look forward to his arrival nonetheless. Today the three of us forked over $30 each and joined the South American Explorers (SAE)club. In the long-run this will prove to be a worthwhile expense; as members we receive discounts at places all over the city, including ... read more

This month has flown by, as I feared and it´s hard to believe I´m going home tomorrow. i´m not really looking forward to it, mostly because I have to spend 8 hours in the Houston Airport with a carry-on full of souvenirs and breakable presents. The good news is that Hurricane Rita seems to have spared Houston from the worst of her ire. Although Continental flights were cancelled for Friday, Saturday, and some Sunday, they expect normal service to resume tomorrow (Monday), and according to their website, both of my flights are still good to go (not cancelled). I´ll keep my fingers crossed until I get to the airport tomorrow. I´m not as sick today as I was yesterday, although my GI system is still a little tender from the Salmonella, 8 days on a boat, ... read more
