- FOOD: Pizza with a grey crust, Indian that took ages to arrive so many cuba libras were our starter, banana and nut pancakes that didn't cure the hangover, Thai food which was just ok. Typical Ecuadorian dish of sausage, mash and cheese and avocado. - AREA: New Town Quito has small streets similar to Soho but they don't feel too safe at night. Old Town Quito reached by tram is nicer with plazas, many more people and a fantastic high cathedral with views of the whole city after climbing the steep dodgy stairs. Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World) - very touristy area where people straddle the ecuator line for photos. Some crap museums. - PEOPLE: Annoying fellow bus passengers, taxi drivers that rip you off, more Aussie guys, fewer indigenous, more black and ... read more

Hey there yáll, this is the mighty Rich signing in under Jenny´s name cos mine still doesn´t work. We´ve found our feet okay, left our hovel and gone to a better place where you don´t have to stay up all night through fear of the staff. Also we´ve got down with the food (kind of), do as the lacals do for cheap food, and we have overcome the language barrier by simply sitting and looking confused till they bring food in the hope we´ll go away. We´ve been up to much of late, although much of it has involved sitting around in Quito planning today´s mammoth expedition of poor fortune, as will be seen. We intended to go on another intrepid expedition into a 4k wide volcano crater, but got it inspiringly wrong. The bus we ... read more

Hello all! Its Jen signing in for my first proper blog! Check out the sign! We know the way to Amarillo and its on the side of a volcano in Ecuador! As if! Let those folk at comic relief know will ya!? Well, our first night in our ´budget´hostal, was unfortunately not our last. Despite the joy of being kept awake all night by horrible noises, and not being allowed out until we had paid our nights rent, we have the joy of one more night there but ho-hum... on to the juicy bits.... Today we went on our first major excursion. Not to Amarillo in fact but to Pasachoa, an extinct volcano outside of Quito. An aclimatization trek. Not only to adjust to the altitude but also our ineptness at Spanish. However, we successfully got ... read more

Well, we arrived in Quito mid afternoon local time on Wednesday, which means I´d been up for about three days. Damnit. Found our feet fairly quickly, and found a decent place to kip. Unfortunately that was too pricey and now we reside in an annex of hell, with dubious electrics and novel plumbing. But at three dollars a night it´s all good. Had fun trying to fit in with the locals (see attached pictures) and generally melting into the crowd in the manner of a six foot skinhead amongst a population of dwarves with girly hair. food is cheap, and good. Tapas is variable and cheap, but we´re feeling homesick so we´re off for a (probably dog awful) curry in a minute. weather is better than Britain (not hard, but 27 degrees C. today) and generally ... read more

Welcome to the online diary of Jen and Rich as we take over Ecuador and beyond. "Why write a diary?" I returned to The Old Town in Quito with a strong feeling of achievement. The Galapagos cruise that had been weighing on my mind for so long had been a huge success and was safely “out of the way”. With three days remaining, I could look back on my entire trip and see an amazing run - not one bad day came to mind. I was also excited to be going home, something that surprised me. I had an energy building inside me that I wanted to get home and focus. I felt a little weird about this final half-week. I had always pictured a seamless transition from the island beaches to the airport but instead I had a few days to fill before my flight (back) to Buenos Aires, and home. Checking in to The ... read more

I didn’t think about it at the time but the trip to Quito was my last big bus ride. The service arrived in the city centre at 5am so I was relieved that the hostel I had planned on had rooms available. I sat in silence in the lounge room and ate a fantastic baguette sandwich prepared by the night watchman. Much later, as people began emerging from darkened dorm rooms, I began to get the idea that there had been a very big night here while I was dozing on the bus. Someone appeared to retrieve a pile of their clothes that they couldn´t remember shedding and another was vigorously accused of trying to spin on his head, breakdance-style. The hostel was very social and I quickly got to know the ringleaders and was brought ... read more

Unfortunately we are unable to add any photos at the moment but we should be able to in a few days time. Today we visited the old town of Quito. Some of the buildings are from the 15th century and are still standing after surviving several major earthquakes. We drove to the highest point of the town for some spectacular views. We had the afternoon free and managed to visit a local park where there were some paintings and local crafts for sale. We visited the main shopping centre which would put the quadrant to shame. This evening we went to a restaurant where they had some traditional music and dancing. Tomorrow we are up again at 7.00am, after breakfast we leave Quito and make our way to Mindo, which is in the cloud forest. On ... read more

Arrived in Quito 1 hour late, not bad after 21 hours travelling. Flight okay, met the rest of our group at the airport, 10 of us in total we are the youngest!!
