After all this time traveling I still find it both refreshing and disturbing how open and direct people are in South America, people talk happily to me about their hemorrhoids and sex lives, people talk about how black somebody is as a means of distinguishing who you are talking about (as in "do you mean Bruno el negrito or el morenito?). This always confuses me because to me they are all dark skinned and I obviously cant distinguish the finer points of brownness yet! The most common name I hear people call each other in Colombia though is Maríca, translated as faggot. Every bloke here calls every other bloke (or even child) gay, and when I asked someone the other day what the title of Brokeback Mountain was translated as here, their straight faced answer was ... read more

I met two swiss guys, Pascal and Julien, In the hostel in Medellin, who were heading to Rio Claro, so I made a last minute decision to join them, and a good decision that was! Rio Claro is a nature reserve about 3hrs from Medellin, with the main feature being the pristine River (Rio Claro). We hadn't booked any accomodation, so when we walked past a campground we decided to give it a try. We managed to hire a tent (at least it resembled one) from the guy who managed the grounds, and stayed there for 4 days. We spent the time there relaxing, swimming, fishing and sitting around the campfire. We also managed to hire some tubes, so also spent a few hours floating down the river, stopping to jump off some cliffs, exploring a ... read more

Oooooooh! I was very excited when I learned that one of the best places to celebrate Carnival in Latin America (apart from Rio and Salvador, obviously!) was in Barranquilla in Columbia, woo hoo! Barranquilla is a town that absolutely no tourists go to at any other time of the year because it is quite an ugly port city with not much to do. The only good thing about it is that it is where Shakira lives!!! I was very dissapointed not to see her! However, over the 4 days of carnival Barranquilla comes alive with floats, parades and people generally partying in the streets! The first day of carnival was possibly one of the most fun days that I´ve ever had! There were so many people about and everyone is laughing, singing, wearing ridiculous clothes and ... read more

Carnival is tomorrow, I'm sure I'll have a number of madcap stories to tell you after. Us teachers are planning some costumes that would be stunningly unPC and any pictures will pretty much prevent me ever seeking public office, but here it’s all good, in the spirit. Carnival is hedonism, debauchery, and self indulgence. I do my best to avoid all three on a normal basis, but Carnivale brings out the worst in me. Like rollar hockey. I've watched several movies since I've been on break. Dr. Zhivago is excellent, and the actress who plays the lead is beautiful. Being an actor really is like being immortal, since I imagine this lady is probably pretty old by now and not so beautiful, except maybe on the inside and who cares about that? This theory also justifies ... read more

I have said it before but it really seems like the whole world is in Colombia! I haven't come across this many travelers, locals or other South Americans in any other country. I know I have been here over Christmas holidays but it doesn't seem to be stopping even now. Some one said that the locals here are only just starting to feel safe enough now to travel again in their own country and I guess they have been waiting a long time. I am really enjoying Colombia for lots of reasons, the climate, the music, the friendly people. It seems like they have got right in this country in terms of customer service too. In all the other South American countries I have visited, the service is at best, indifferent, at worst, so slack that ... read more

South America » Colombia » Bogota January 28th 2008

Bogota was my first stop in Colombia, and is a pretty interesting city. I did most of the major sighseeing on the first day, starting in the historic center, Plaza Bolivar. From there all the interesting buildings (Cathedrals, presidents residence, older buildings) are quickly covered. Entrance to museaums was also free, so I visited the Gold museum, as well as the Botero gallery, which much to my suprise, I quite enjoyed. Botero is a famous Colombian artist, who draws (and sculpts) everything supersized. For great views of the city, I took the cable car up to Monseratte, a church on the mountains overlooking Bogota. That evening I met up with Stewart, a friend of Mike (a friend from Vienna), who has been living in Colobia for 10 years. He gave me some tips about Colombia, and ... read more

After meeting lots of other travellers who had already been to South America, the general consensus seemed to be that Colombia was pretty high on the list of their favourite places. Although my original plan was to fly straight from Panama to Ecuador, I decided that it seemed a bit silly to miss out on a country that was so close to where I was already. After a quick phone call to my mum to check she wouldn´t disown me, my new friend Jenna and I booked a flight to Columbia and off we went the very next day!! First stop was Cartagena- a really lovely place. It is on the coast and made up of 2 distinct areas, the old town with lovely buildings built within fort walls, and a very modern section with skyscrapers. ... read more

My roommates took off this weekend to go play in a mountain lake, and I'm left here alone. It's okay. First, I really didn't need to spend the money to go there, when in two weeks we are going there for free on a teachers retreat. Second, two people are coming down this weekend. One of my roommates is coming back, and then a good friend of us Judson guys is coming to stay for a while....like a couple months while. Its another amigo to hang out with, help on rent and help sub some of my classes. Also, we had our maid come for the first time today. I know! Sounds very bourgeouis, but five guys living in an apartment is not a good start for cleanliness. Plus, its worth $15 American dollars a week ... read more

South America » Colombia » Leticia » Rio Yavari, Amazon January 25th 2008

At the end of our little cruise we touched down in Santa Rosa, which is the Peruvian side of the river. From where we stood, we could see Leticia (the Colombian border town) and Tabatinga (the Brazilian town) on this three-way border. After a few emigration formalities, mainly involving me paying a small fine for overstaying my Peruvian visa, we hopped from dirty nappy to dirty nappy to get into a boat for five minutes to take us to Colombia. Expecting full body cavity searches and hectic immigration, we were surprised to find absolutely nothing in the way of immigration - no desk, no guard, no closed office, no queue. In fact, not even the army guys, with their reassuring sub-machine guns, knew where we could do things correctly and legally. So we didn´t. We just ... read more

So, much to the dismay of my brother, I made it to Colombia. His warnings of the Cali and Medellin drug cartels, Pablo Escobar stories, the fact it produces 80% of the world´s cocaine, and has regular tales of kidnappings and murders, was enough to put some doubts in my mind. But the experiences of everyone else I have met on the road proclaims it to be one of the world's best kept secrets. Let´s keep it that way, eh? It is, and I am not exagerrating, one of the most beautiful, peaceful and friendly places I have ever been to in my entire life. Apart from Malaysia, but of course I´m supposed to say that. We arrived in Bogota, wet and stinking after our little jungle adventure. Bogota is cold, and generally threatening rain if ... read more
