I'm sorry I haven't updated this in nearly a month. So much goes on, that its hard to sit down and just organize my thoughts and write them into a coherent narrative. But let me try... As a school, we traveled out of the mountains and into the rainforest. It was a little worrisome at first, as we were traveling into paramilitary area. Not exactly FARC ground, but really close. We arrived at our location safely and had three days playing at a resort. Well, it called itself a resort....it was really the most amassed collection of insects and creepy-crawlies I've ever seen. There were bugs everywhere. At night, you had to seek shelter or you would become one big mosquito bite. One of our fellow teachers had over 250 bites...we counted! I was 'lucky' enough ... read more

Hi, I have arrived in carolina and it is so beautiful. Even better than I remember. There is no internet cafe here but the Cultural Centre has let me use the computers. Everyone is so kind and helpful. Now I am going to find an hotel now and probably stay a couple of nights. I have spoken to Jesus, the friend I used to know when I lived here, and I am going to see him on friday night. I am extremely happy and very excited about staying up here in the bush. Love to you all. Anne I hope you are getting these messages. ... read more

Although I think it's fairly empty saber rattling from a head of state with some real domestic problems on his hands hoping to distract his masses I won't let it stop me from personally declaring war on both Venezuela and Ecuador. If you've ever played Risk with me you know that's something to be slightly inconvenienced by. You know how awesome snow days are? What's even better is a Violent Transportation Strike Day. When the snows roll in you hope, but I had no hope of a free day until at like 8 at night I got a phone call telling me I didn't have to work. It was the best thing ever. Oh and the bus drivers are angry about something, who knows. I spent the day getting a massage. I hate it when people ... read more

Right, after a 3 hour drive and a dozen military checks in Venezuela we finally got to border. It was easy enough to get through...pay $16 exit fee, walk to different place to receive exit stamp, cross border by foot, being asked some question by Colombian border officials and then getting passport stamped. Not bad at all. We went straight to Santa Marta to watch the Oscars but the hotel (bloody expensive btw) didn't have electricity but it came back in time and the evening was saved :) After that we were pretty much hanging out for a week in Taganga, close to Santa Marta. We stayed in Casa de Felipe, lovely place but boiling hot and mosquitoe infested. Great place to meet people though and there was some drinking and party going on every day. ... read more

Moi! Sanoi vaan, etta on parempikin ettet tieda, tosin laivan, joka seilasi Liberian lipun alla, kotisatamana Monrovia, omisti saksalaiset, tarkoitti hieman turvallisempaa reissua. Saksalais... read more

After spending my last weeks in Colombia partying in Santa Marta, then relaxing and diving in Taganga, I parted ways with Pascal & Julien, and returned to Cartagena with Andy and Emma, a couple I had met about 3 weeks previously in Quito. They had the same plan to take a yacht from Cartagena to Panama, so our itineraries fit perfectly.. Back in Cartagena we headed straight for the marina to find out about potential yachts, and the first one we saw didn't exactly fill us with hope. It was small, cramped, and only sailing in 5 days.. Luckily a family saw us asking around, and told us they had just booked on another ship, sailing in two days. So we called the captain, he showed us the ship, and that settled it. The ship, called ... read more

So we entered South America via the war torn, crime ridden, drug capital of the world where if the paramilitaries, drug cartels or left wing guerrillas don´t kill you then the fer-de-lance snakes surely will. Or so people would think. The reality is that we found Colombia to be one of the friendliest, most welcoming countries we have been to, where people will cross the street to help you catch a taxi, tell you exactly how much to pay and feel extremely happy that you want to visit their country. We started our colombia trip with Cartagena, the beautiful colonial city made famous by the film Romancing the Stone. Nice park, Big balconies, cobbled streets, lovely. Then we headed up the caribbean coast to Taganga, a small caribbean fishing village with nice beaches and some big ... read more

Well it seems again I have delayed writing my blog until there is just too much to tell you all! I left Barranquilla pretty exhausted after the carnaval and so couldn't bring myself to join the other gringos in San Gil for any of the adventure sports offered there. I had a look round the small villages of Guane and Barichara, which were pretty but not all that interesting to be honest apart from the beautiful interior of the church in Barichara. A sleepless night with swollen glands in San Gill, waking myself and everyone else up making strange strangled noises, forced me to visit the doctor where I discovered that I am allergic to penicillin (luckily through a test, not the hard way!) and that I had pharyngitis. So it was a quick jab in ... read more

Is what the bus driver yelled on way there at every stop. It was quite amusing the first 50 times, then you just have to tune out, especially if you're sitting at the front of the bus. This was one of the places that we have booked in advance by getting an apartment. This is located in the neighbourhood of El Cabrero. We were promised a one bed and one pull out sofa bed, however upon arrival sure enough it was just a regular sofa. Now since I am not a midget and I don't feel like curling up like a pretzel every night just to fit on the couch, alternate arrangements have to be made at $80/night if memory serves right. So I ended up getting my own apartment. We looked at Bocagrande, but the ... read more

Santa Marta and such So off we go to Santa Marta or better yet...according to my guidebook - El Rodadero, which is the touristy district close to Santa Marta. As the main bus drops us off at the bus terminal. We tell the cab driver to take us to Hotel Becoma...and he had no clue where that was. So I checked my book again and sure enough it says what I thought. So he told us it was Betoma!! SO THERE LONELY PLANET! The hotel was really close to the beach and it didn't seem that bad. As soon as we got out of the cab, some guy approached us like I thought would happen and asked us how much we are going to pay for the hotel. We tell him 120,000 COL pesos which works ... read more
