We started Medellín with the Paisa Road Escobar tour, like proper cheesy tourists. Our guide Nicholas was brilliant. Beginning at the block where Escobar lived with his family, and which was bombed in 1988 by the Calí cartel. This building sits in a very rich area but is barricaded and owned by the Colombian government, sitting empty. Many locals feel Escobar is being glorified with all these tourist tours, as a local walked past and made a comment. Nicholas reasssured her we all think he’s a criminal, doh. Many of the buildings from that era stand out, with the architecture being named ‘Miami style.’ We then visited his grave, a bit morbid but interesting to see the amount of other leading figures from different cartels at the same cemetery. We passed many other sites of note, ... read more

Today we visited the Lijuana coffee farm in the hills of Medellín. The history of coffee was overwhelming but my brain started to frazzle after a while, especially trying to concentrate in Spanish. Our father and son combo tour guides were a great laugh though, and clearly passionate about Colombian coffee being the best in the world. We then went to processing factory and sporting some trendy hair nets and white coats, went through the taste testing. Facts of the day: - Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia by a farmer who’s goats started acting crazy when they chewed on the coffee fruits. I knew how they felt. - First coffee crop in the Middle East was in Mocha, Yemen, where mocha coffee term derives. - The first and most famous coffee in London was Lloyds, ... read more

The 35 minute flight from Bogota started well and ended badly. Apparently the landing into Medellín is “always like that” but the lady next to me doing her Hail Marys didn’t reassure me. Thankfully we landed safely and arrived at our hotel, Acqua in El Poblado area. A quick bit of food and an early night to begin.... read more

Mark Twain said that if you try to grab a cat by the tail, there are things that you'll learn that you can't learn any other way... or something like that. I think the same could be said about one's first dealings with ocean shipping companies, mercurial ship schedules, port authorities, and the many disgruntled and generally grumpy people of which they are comprised. Cargo shipping agents, in particular, are a notorious lot, many of whom have fallen into this line of work after having shown a lack of required character and integrity to succeed as used car salesmen. To partially quote Steve Carrell (from The Office), if I were in a room with Osama bin Laden, Hitler, and a cargo shipping agent, and had only a gun with just two bullets, I'd shoot the shipping ... read more

After getting our Lost City laundry back we took the bus down the coast to Cartagena. I thought we’d sweated a lot during The Lost City trek but I’m fairly sure it was hotter and sweatier here! There were at least a couple of occasions where we had to head back to the hostel and the safety of the fans after venturing outside to look around! The old town was really nice to walk around and very colourful. There is plenty of street art to admire, beautifully decorated balconies and the shop mannequins are also quite entertaining as well. Along with the kind you are accustomed to seeing in Marks & Spencer’s back home they also have mannequins to cater for the surgically enhanced ladies shall we say and we even saw one fuller bodied one ... read more

Die Zimmer waren ganz ok ... read more

Medellín (26/04/2018-29/04/2018) Once the World's murder capital, Medellín is now a proud and modern city. But in the 1990s Medellín was the centre of worldwide cocaine trade. The streets were full of motorbike riding sicarios on killing sprees for the most famous drug lord, Pablo Escobar. Declared as the most violent place in the World; it was an absolute no go for any tourists. But in 2013, Medellín won the award for the Most Innovative City in the World. Now transformed with an awesome metro, cable cars, stunning graffiti, outdoor escalators, modern restaurants and night clubs; the people of Medellín (the Paisas) play hard and work hard. The city boasts passionate, hard-working people and a powerful nightlife with legendary parties. Nestled in a beautiful valley, Medellín is surrounded by beautiful mountain terrain. Also known as the ... read more

The trip to Medellin involved a bus change in Bucharamanga and then a road of constant curves as it passed up and over the Andes. This makes it harder to sleep than you would think as you are constantly being jostled back and forth by the moving bus. We also learned that for 8+ hour bus rides we need two motion sickness pills since we were loopy even after pulling into Medellin. Becky laid down on a bench at the bus station to settle herself and got told by a security guard that we weren't allowed to sleep. It's 6:30 in the morning and we are clearly backpackers who just got off a bus, but he didn't take any excuses. It was either sit up or jog on. So we made our way to Medellin's modern ... read more
