Feeling much better now, after I was sick I stopped by a call centre and had a cry to my family, then fish rang me while I was in the supermarket trying to figure out what wouldn't make me more sick anmd had a cry to him as well. ah, the joys of travelling solo, no one to look after you or feed you, everything is by yourself and most of the time it makes you feel like shit until you meet someone awesome which is always the best part ;) After sleeping in and not leaving the hostel for a few days i decided to push myself out the door and head for Valperiso, a beautiful city 2 hours away from Santiago and a verty popular tourtist spot. As I left I remember thinking to ... read more

Hey guys just a quick one before we head off on a five day hike around the Torres del Paine. It will just be like camping in england as its cold in the south and rains alot, so we have had a lifes worth of training! Had loads of fun in Valparaiso. At first it was a bit dodgy as we stayed near the bus station and were the only tourists for miles-people just stared at us all the time as if we were freaks, so was a bit intimadating (please dont all make loads of comments now about how we are freaks and they should stare!!) hehe! We obviously moved somewhere else the next day, nice little area called Concepcion which had all the acsensors (lifts up the sides of the hills) and was a ... read more

Below you’ll find some fresh reflexions upon life in Valparaiso, although I'm not really sure if anyone actually is reading these entries… I'm getting a lot of mails saying: "oh, and your blog looks great, but I haven't quite had time to read it yet.." But anyway, I’m glad people seem to like looking at it at least. This site is for you, so feel free to come with requests (you can post comments down at the end of each entry) on what you want me to write about, if it should be longer, shorter, wittier. more provoking etc. As predicted my life here is now a bit more stable, but I wouldn’t exactly call it everyday life.. I have been working for almost a month now, without really feeling that my life has gotten that ... read more

Long entry… but exciting weekend with the inauguration… so here goes! Valparaíso Second weekend here, and Chile inaugurated it’s first woman president. What lucky timing we have! On Friday, despite some slight wavering because we had been told by several of our reputable sources that we wouldn’t be able to see anything special, 5 friends and I caught a bus to Valparaíso (Valpo) for 2,900 pesos or about $6. It was about an hour and a half, and on the way my friend Michelle and I planned out a 6 day trip down to the south of Chile, Punta Arenas, to see a penguin colony and a national park, Torres del Paine. Anyway, we arrived in Valpo in the afternoon and began to get a feel for the city. We found a hostel only about 2 ... read more

So... we arrived safely in Santiago - I nabbed the window seat to once again compete with the Japanese on tacky photo taking. View of the Andes was spectacular - seemed stranged to see that just an hour after leaving BA. Due to us being on a pretty tight schedule we decided to leave Santiago immediately to go onto Valparaiso as we have to fly back out of Santiago next month and can spend more time there then. Valpo was just a two hour bus ride out of Santiago and just from the airport to the hostel we met lots of lovely Chileans helping us with directions etc. All of us have made a note to ourselves to be more helpful to lost tourists when back in the UK. Picked a random hostel out of the ... read more

Hola We arrived in Santiago and took a bus straight to Valparasio on the coast.. and old pretty city, set in the mountains with lots of colourful houses. First things about Chile, its expensive, the food is all fast food and the people speak really, really fast. They are lucky to have the Andes and a long strip of coast. We spent a day in Viña del Mar, pretending to be posh. We ate food and drank cocktails at a swanky seafood restaurant on the beach. Nothing that special...until loads of teenage girls started hanging around, with pens & autograph books. Then security cordened us off, it was all very strange. We were thinking... maybe its Bono, maybe Franz Ferdinand...Then we noticed we were eating in the same place as a boyband (not sure who...) but ... read more

Howdy all, how are we?! Well, I just spent a very entertaining weekend in Valparaiso. It was good fun to be back in hostel again. Eventually. You see, Greg and I had not booked anywhere to stay for various reasons. But we were travelling down with 2 girls from school who had booked a place, so we thought we´d go where they were going and we might be OK, or if not they could point us in the right direction. Well, we arrived at the hostel, and surprise surprise they were fully booked. They phoned around some other places but they were all full too. So they pointed us in the general direction of 'a few´ hostels. Eventually we found one, but it was booked up too. So after a couple hours walkings the very hilly ... read more

English For the second time we crossed the border Argentina-Chile. This time the experience was much more positive, we did not had the same sad feeling of touristic exploitation that we tasted in Torres del Paine. Coming from Argentina we had to switch our brain to the chilean accent with 'ja, ja' again... Ok, we were quite trained this time, but we have to say that even if the language is the same, coming from one country to another in South America one has really to make an effort to grasp the differences in the accent. It takes quite a while to learn the typical essential words that can be very different from country to country. This can cost you some misunderstandings... At our arrival at Puerto Montt at lunch time we were terribly hungry. Since ... read more

As usual I wasn’t very lucky with my flight across the ocean. This time it was the weather in Frankfurt that put an end to my dreams of the Chilean sun. As we were about to go down in Frankfurt we were informed that that they had closed the airport due to snow that had to be cleared away from the landing ground. After a while of circling around the plane was redirected to Cologne - less than half an hour away. Landing in Cologne I couldn’t even see the slightest snow flake, and did all of a sudden feel very cheated. As we were waiting for the plane to reful and take us back to Frankfurt, hopefully just in time for the connecting flights, we were informed that the plane was needed somewhere else. So ... read more
