We spent our time in Cusco relaxing before our trek. Despite being a lovely town with fantastic buildings and history we were a little overwhelmed by all the people hassling us on the street for everything from meals with free pisco to finger puppets. We spent most of our time in the usual Gringo hang-outs, Jack's, Paddy's (the highest Irish owned pub in the world). After two days in Cusco we were ready to leave on our Inca Trek. We weren't doing the classic Inca Trail but what the tour company called a 'community trek'. This involved walking in a nearby valley and staying with the local communities with a percentage of the money we paid going to projects in these communities. The first day of our trek was spent mainly visiting the ruins of Sacsayhuaman ... read more

We were up at 6.30am and on the bus to Valparaiso by 8.00. It was packed with local people and travellers heading to the coast for new year. The journey inevitably took us through the mountains descending very rapidly to the beach resort. The beginning of the 2 hour journey was through dry dusty land. Through the second half we were surrounded by miles of vineyards where the air was fresher and cooler, a pleasure to breath. Noel referred to the Lonely Planet gude to see if we could get a tour of the vineyards. Whilst it is possible there is no wine-tasting and no cheap wine so we thought ´sod that for a game of soldiers.´ Valparaiso used to be a bustling port town as it sits in a huge natural bay. However with the ... read more

Our next stops were brief visits to the beautifully unique city of Valparaiso and the neighbouring Vina Del Mar. Valparaiso is a city built on hills and travelling around the city and up and down the hills involves taking a ride on their many funicular elevators! Our local elevator, Cerro Concepcion is the city's oldest, and the odd rickety noises kinda reminded us every so often! The first of our two hostels in Valpo kind of resembled Alfred Hitchcock´s Psycho... think man living alone, picture of mother, hole in wall... hmmm lets just say, watch out when you pre-book accomodation! Anyway, we found a really cool hostel to stay in just around the corner, nice rooms, cool atmosphere, free breakfasts - all good so long as you can handle being chased by stray dogs at night! ... read more

Next I stopped at a small town called Vicuña, in an area famous for it´s vineyards. After a short rest in the park, where lots of children rode around in severely underpowered mini-trucks and hot rods, I trudged off to find a hotel. I finally stopped at the Valle Hermosa, and a man showed me to a room with two beds and a private bathroom. Later that night, the hotel owner struck up a conversation with me, and after we talked for a half hour, and after a few more hotel guests joined our conversation, he poured us all some local wine, and his wife made mini-pizzas. They were sure to point out the the extra one was for me, and not for the guys sitting around the table. I was still having quite a bit ... read more

After hearing stories from Emi, and Jennie about protests at UPLA I finally experienced a real one for myself. It wasn't just students in the middle of the street sitting in desks blocking the roads from busses passing; OH NO....I have to agree with Emi that this was "Más Violenta". I never in my life thought that I would have to run away from work in order to get onto a bus back to Viña del Mar. So, the story goes like this: I was minding my business upstairs in the loft doing work and thinking about what I was going to be packing for my trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina. I was alone today in the office so I really was in my own world. Then out of no where I hear "Niña hola, niña, ... read more

Hello again, Well, we hit the half-way point. We have exactly ten weeks left in the trip, but that´s OK. All trips have to have a half-way point. Knowing we get to spend the same amount of time down here as we already have is a wonderful feeling. Our trip is by no means long by South American travel standards. The average trip to South America for people we have come in contact with is about 3 months. And many of the people are doing this trip as one leg of their year-long around-the-world trip. Today we find ourselves in a city called Valparaíso, about 1.5 hours from Santiago on the Pacific Ocean. Our guide at La Chascona in Santiago described Valparaíso as San Francisco on a LSD trip, but we think it may be closer ... read more

So the first exciting experience this Saturday was meeting Emi's friend Meg. She is from Minnesota who had studied in Argentina but decided to flee off to New Zealand for more "Adventure". Jennie and I were heading to Emi's apartment to go and celebrate Eduardo's birthday when we saw Sam and an unfamiliar girl. I said "HEYYYYY....SAMMY!!" and upon greeting I heard "AMANDA!?!" which was followed by a huge unexpected, but welcomed hug. She said she had heard so much about me that she felt like she and I were already friends, not strangers. Since it was Sam, his little sister Barry, Brian, and Meg's first time in Viña we wanted to make it adventurous for them (and let's not forget the birthday boy). Well let's just say it was.....Interesting. Jennie and I got to Emi's ... read more

So I can't believe that we are in May already! Things have been going great here and Im sad that we only have 2 months left cause the time is going to fly by! On May 18th to the 23rd I will be at Easter Island, "Isla de Pascua" a.k.a. "El ombligo del mundo"--The belly button of the world!!!! which Im very excited about because its one of the most remote places in the world, 5 1/2 hours off the coast of Chile. We are going to be camping on the beach and renting a car so that we can check out the whole island. Im just excited cause they "lae" (spelling?!?) you when you get off the plane! But Im exstatic about being able to see the Moai statues. http://www.rapanui.cl/eng/index.html http://www.mysteriousplaces.com/Easter_Island/ http://www.southpacific.org/text/finding_easter.html So as for ... read more

So have been spending th least couple of days in the Vs - Valdivia, Valparaiso and Vina del Mar. Valdivia is in the south and a mere seven hours from Castro. I headed over in the hopes of finer weather and civilization (ie something more than a 5 street place). I got both which was lucky but not really much else. Valdivia is a little town in the south, large in comparison with the rest of the places. It is situated near the lakes and volcanoes but quite frankly I have seen enough lakes to last me a life time by now. However I stayed for two days strolling about the town, venturing down to the market where the sea lions wait for the fishermen to throw them some scraps and essentially just enjoyed being somewhere ... read more
