Crossing into Chile from Bolivia, we only had four days left in South America, so we immediately caught a bus from the border town of San Pedro de Atacama to Calama. We stayed one night here, but unfortunately due to time constraints, we couldn't visit the Copper mine to the north, the largest open mine in the world. Instead we then caught another bus to Antofogasta for our flight to Santiago. Northern Chile will have to wait for another trip....(and the south!) In Santiago, we visited San Cristobal hill for panoramic views of the city. The city zoo was also on this hill and went in for a look , although not perhaps the best place to see polar bears! At the top we took a cable car to a wine museum, where we had a ... read more

Hier bin ich nun also. Es gibt ... read more

I'm still broke. That's the bad news. The good news is ... well there isn´t much to be honest. We got up bright and early to be at the bike shop so I could get my tyre problem sorted out, but of course bike shops don't open early, so we sat around for an hour and a half before they finally came along at 10am. After much miming they understood the problem and I somehow got stung another 2000 pesos to change my tyres for some that did actually fit my rims. I found this strange as they'd promised me the day before that the one's I'd bought were the best they had. A valuable tip for any other cyclists looking for bike parts in Santiago. There is a plethora of bike shops in San Diego ... read more

The next day in la Serena it was cold and overcast in the morning. Finally mananged to get out and wander around the town, lovely place, really relaxed. Caught up on internet admin! Met some English girls travelling with and Australian man from Santiago. Got chatting to Pancho, the cobbler at the hostel. We talked about everything from the best growing conditions for grapes to the economy under Pinochet. Love talking to the older generation - their stories are often fascinating! Got up fairly early and caught the bus to Santiago. I suddenly felt really excited, i was going to a city like BA, where i could blend in and not get stared at! In Bolivia I really stood out as a foreigner, but ive missed knowing that i could pass as say, Argentinian in BA, ... read more

We´ll we finally arrived in Chile in a little town called San Pedro de Atacama. After a brief look around at our hostal options which were pretty crap for the money we decided to hop on a night bus down to the coast. We picked up a bus straight away with the Irish boys and Tanya from our Salar tour and made our way down to La Sarena, a little costal town north of Santiago. We relaxed a couple of days on the coast, although the weather was still a little chilly for the beach, before heading on to Santiago. Santiago is a sprawling city of 5million people with the perminently snow capped Andes as a backdrop. We stayed in a little area called Barrio Brasil which is the University quarter so lots of nice little ... read more

Santiago came as a bit of a shock. Anything that you want is on tap, the youngsters wear funky clothes and hang out in roadside cafés slurping beers, the food is good, the wine is great and the parties don´t stop until dawn. We can certainly testify to the latter - our hotel was located in Bella Vista, which is rammed full of bars and clubs. The music didn´t stop until after 6 am. However, that was no problem for SuperSnoozeSuse and her earplugged sidekick. As it was Doug´s last night we felt like we ought to get in on the action. It was no problem finding a suitable location for a few swift ones and we soon had glasses of Pisco Sour in our hands. This is the national drink of Chile. It consists of ... read more

At the border between Tacna and Arica, we drove the couple of kilometres to the Chilean border post. There, we had our bags searched again, just as at the Peruvian side, but this time they had x-ray machines and this was a sign of what was to come: Chile is very much more advanced and wealthy than Peru. We had to put our clocks forward by two hours! I’ve never had to do that at a land border before. I got to Arica and was in the situation of getting used to another country and another currency again. I intitially thought the exchange rate was twice what it was so was shocked to find Chile so expensive. Turns out it was only half as expensive. It’s still cheaper than the UK, but very much dearer than ... read more
