Several days into our Honeymoon Adventure, and we have made it South to Puerto Varas. Santiago is a fascinating city, with so much history and culture. The architecture is stunning, with very obsious European influences. Being 92 degrees, we were ready to head South toward Patagonia just as soon as we landed. We had to take a couple of days to orient ourselves to being in the southern hemisphere, in the heat. . . .and also we were not able to leave until last night as the trains and buses were all booked. At least we were able to wander the city, go to one of the oldest Cathedrals in Santiago, and went to the Muesum of Art Precolumbia. No words can describe the incredible art that indeginous people created, some thousands and thousands of years ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Varas January 10th 2015

Jan 9th– We started today around 9. Our guide came to the hotel and told us to not wear black as it attracts the large flies they have in the National Park for 2 weeks each year. So, you know Shelly (all in black) so she changed. We had a private van and driver and guide. The guide was from Alaska (born) and New Jersey(grew up) but moved to Chile about 40 years ago. He spoke great English. It was like a history lesson the entire day with facts and interesting items. We first stopped at the green lake and did about an hour hike. It was cool and had some great views. Then we looked at the volcano, but it was still in the clouds somewhat so we chose to go visit the waterfalls. This ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Varas January 9th 2015

On the 7th, we left San Pedro de Atacama and took the little over an hour drive to the airport in Calama where we caught a flight to Santiago then to Puerto Montt in Northern Patagonia. Once we landed we were picked up for a 30 minute drive to Puerto Varas. We are now in the lake region. There are large lakes everywhere and Puerto Varas is a lake port. The lake is about 100 miles in circumference. There are a couple of massive volcanoes around here too. We checked in at the boutique hotel cleaned up and then went out to dinner. One of the restaurants we were recommended was just at the end of the block. We had a wonderful dinner and a nice bottle of wine. We had emailed our Chile travel agency ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Chiloé Island December 16th 2014

... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Futaleufu November 2nd 2014

And everywhere you look there are flowers, babies and snowy mountains. And of course the famous river Futa. Today we head off from Futaleufu where we've had a great time seeing the pretty town, the river and neighbouring mountains. We became lost yesterday afternoon and were adopted by a young farm kid, who showed us the Zeta one of the famous rapids on the Futa. He lives on a farm in a very remote part of the river near the national park, and was a very willing guide. And before we left, he played guitar and sang us a couple of songs. It was precious. In summer people come to Futeleufu from around the world to ride the class 4, 5 and 5+ rapids on the mint green Futa, and we could see why. It is ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Futaleufu October 30th 2014

Its 10pm and I'm in front of a roaring fire in a cabanya in Futelefu. Its freezing outside and I'm exhausted from concentrating all day on potholed, sometimes icy gravel roads, the occassional crazy Chilean driver, and magnificent scenery at every turn. Perhaps this blog should be called: " a postcard on every corner and other challenges of driving in Pategonia....." Though I'm gradually getting used to driving on the right hand side of the road, and not veering left at oncoming trucks... We left Puerto Montt the day before yesterday, 2 days to drive 260kms to this magic place... Futalefu; makes me think of wizened old Chinese men catching flies with chopsticks.... The northern end of the Carretera is broken by extremely steep terrain (cliffs into ocean), so it involves ferry crossings.... these are ocean ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Montt October 28th 2014

And so the adventure begins...... Onward through Pategonia via the Carretera Austral! We arrived in Puerto Montt this afternoon, after a 2 hour flight from Punta Arenas.... keen to continue our journey in Patagonia, beginning in the north and heading south..... Tommorrow morning we collect our home for the next 4 weeks... it's a 4x4 Hilux ute, with a caravan on the back, equiped with the basics for staying alive and traversing the road which Pinochet designed to unite Chile's remote south. But before that, a quick recount of the last few days... Back in Punta Arenas we visited 2 delightful places. First was on the shores of the Straits of Magellan, where a group of enthusiasts were recreating history, or at least its infrastructure. Completed is a replica of Magellans ship 'Victoria', which he sailed ... read more
