DAY 18 Today was an early 6 am alarm for a 7 am start with an initial 5 hr drive south from the Paine National Park to Punta Arenas airport via Porta Natales and then a 2 hr flight to Puerto Montt. From Puerto Montt our hotel was located a further 90 min drive to the shores of Todos los Santos, a deep crystaline emerald lake with the stunning backdrop of snowcapped Volcano Osorno. All up a 12 hr day travelling but at least we left behind some nasty weather. Tiring for recovering sick passengers. The hotel itself is like a Swiss chalet and very welcome and an exciting day awaits tomorrow at our doorstep.... read more

Puerto Montt, Chile--Monday, December, 2013 Scattered showers with temps at about 50 degrees. Valerie and I met in the lounge at 8:15, as the cruise director announced, to get our tender tickets. The winds came up, and for safety, they started having only one tender go at a time, so we didn’t get on the dock until 9:15. There, after looking around and talking to a representative of the guide, we discovered that our tour had taken off without us. Another couple was in the same boat with us and so the 4 of us quickly got on another tour that was forming in a van right then and there. It seemed to be going to the same places, so off we went. Puerto Montt seemed to be a fairly good sized town with the Calbuco ... read more

**** I can confirm now, there’s nothing to do in Puerto Montt for a tourist! Maybe only the wood made church, the oldest building in the town? It is just the platform to go to Chiloe Island the following day and to take the ferry to the austral Patagonia later this ... read more

Saturday 23/2/13 – This morning we woke up and did some quick shopping before leaving the northern Chilean city of Calama. Kenz’s blow-up mattress has been leaking recently through the valve and it no longer stayed inflated for the whole night. We went to the local hardware store and bought a $10 replacement which looks the business (it has been encouragingly nicknamed ‘Cloud 9’). As we left Calama we rode through the largely abandoned town of Chuquicamata which has recently been displaced by the encroachment of the biggest open pit copper mine in the world. We tried to organise a tour of the mine, however we would have had to wait 4 days before we could get access. We left Chuquicamata and rode to the coastal city of Antofagasta. Just north of the city we crossed ... read more

Today is February 14th, Valentines day. I was so chuffed. I had worked out all by my self that Valentines Day would occur when we were away. When Roisin woke up she was welcomed by a card and a heart shaped box of chocolates. OK not the most original of ideas but when you're celebrating this day 6,000 miles away it has to be the thought that counts. These chocolates could well have ended up in San Diego! And in my case, I was in the process of giving me a proverbial 'pat on the back' when Roisin leaned over to her bedside dresser, opened it and produced a card. ‘Happy Valentines Day Sweetie', she said. ‘The man hasn't brought your pressie yet.' ‘What man? What pressie?' I thought. Panic was starting to set in.‘ This ... read more

The ship arrives in Puerto Montt around 8 am and we are tended to shore and on a bus by 9:30. This is a full-day excursion of the city and the surrounding area. The weather is cloudy and rainy but fairly warm at about 15°C. Puerto Montt, named for a former Chilean president, is an attractive but mostly industrial city of 180,000 people. The big industry in town is salmon farming, which has been going on for about a decade. About four years ago, there was a disease crisis with the fish that caused the complete collapse of the industry, but it is now healthy again. The other interesting thing about the area is that it was originally settled by Germans around 1850, and the various towns retain a certain Teutonic charm. Puerto Montt is literally ... read more

The sky is cloudy and there is an intermittent light rain. We can no longer see the volcano. After breakfast, we head over to the Saltos de Petrohué which was very nice. We got there early, but still there were a lot of tourists since this is only a few minutes down the road from the Chilean side of the lakes crossing into Argentina across the Lago Todos Los Santos. I am surprised at the high number of tour buses running up and down this road. We did take the extra few minutes and go all the way down to the lake but there really isn’t much there unless you’re getting on the boat heading over to Argentina or staying at the hotel there. The lake itself didn’t seem as spectacular as we’d been led to ... read more

We woke up this morning and found ourselves in Alaska! Temperature in the middle 50’s, a few snow-capped peaks of the Andes in the foggy distance, and a hard rain falling. Many of the people were going on long tours today, but we decided to take a pass on ours because of a potential lack of communication and the fact that once we leave Puerto Montt, the only way to find us is at sea or amongst the glaciers and fjords of Terre del Paine National Park, and that’s a hard find! Puerto Montt is a beautiful city that we did not have enough time to hang around in and explore. Surrounded by pine trees and the smell of home fires for warmth remind of our home in Pollock Pines. It was great to smell that ... read more

I am writing this entry sat under a cloudless sky. The sun is high in the sky and for the first time in two weeks I am warm. The dormant volcano dominates the skyline and my two companeros, Karina and Andy are walking the shore line of the lake we have found. So,I arrived at the unholy hour of 8am off the boat to the querkiest guest house so far. La Roca. A small house in a Alpine summerhouse style with wooden effect finish. It's is painted a runny shite brown with lime green windows. If it was a bigger house it would look like something out of the horror film, Amityville. It is tiny though, and reckon there could be much banging of head on door frames. Owner though is a great fellow, Leon. His ... read more
