Day 111: Saturday 18th October - Returning to life as a backpacker with a bump Get up ridiculously early so I can enjoy a bath before I leave......don't know when the next opportunity will be! Pack my bags and get breakfast and at shortly after 9am its time to say goodbye to Estancia Huechahue. Jane drives me out to the road and Domingo, one of the gauchos waits with me until the bus shows up at 9.30am. Arrive back in Bariloche some time after noon, and as my next bus is in less than 2 hours its not worth heading into the centre of Bariloche so spend an hour on the internet. Its a 8 hour journey to Puerto Montt....it doesn't look that far on the map but you have to pass two sets of immigration ... read more

So, we made it out of Cochomo with all limbs in tack but plenty of scratches to show for it. Oh, and a pile of very very dirty clothes. My hiking pants will never look the same again, forever carrying Cochomo dirt in the pores of fabric, which is kind of nice or memory''s sake. Who needs photos when you can just collect dirt in your clothing instead. Scratch and sniff style. Haha. They do say that your memory is triggered by scent more than visual cues. I experienced this later, when I was washing my clothes at our friends place in Puerto Monte. While watching the pool of clear water turn filthy dark grey, I got a big waft of smell that totally took me right back to Cochomo. A smell that is hard to ... read more

Consider the mullet. No dad, not the fish, the haircut. Like any rare breed, it has pockets of popularity, in the case of the mullet these are East London, Eastern Europe, Australia, the deep south of the United States and South America. In all but one of these places, the mullet succeeds only in making its owner appear to be a cretin. The mullet can reveal a good many things about the owner; inbreeding, a love of country and western music, low intellect or high radiation levels in the blood. It is only in South America where the mullet is worn well, where it looks, dare I say, cool. Where it says bandit, not bogan. And for these intrepid travellers, the realisation that the mullet can look cool is one of the most startling discoveries of ... read more

The southern part of Chile is composed of hundreds of tiny islands, and only a small strip of mainland. One of the best ways of travelling up the coast is via the Navimag ferry, a big cargo ship that has been adapted slightly (and I mean slightly!) to allow tourists to make the trip too. Other cargo included food, scrap metal, mattresses, and sheep! We bid a fond farewell to my (almost) namesake town Puerto Natales (which has the attractions of the best pizza restaurant we've encountered so far in Latin America, and a dried fruit and nut shop blasting out 70s rock 12 hours a day), to hop on the boat on the evening of Thursday 6th March. We spent the night moored in Puerto Natales and were off at 6am the next day. The ... read more

Well we got to Puerto Montt on time with the Pachamamas and so we got tickets for the 4 day 'cruise' (to use the word in its lightest sense!) to Puerto Natales. The ticket included all meals (of which we got seconds most days), dorm-style bunk bed in lowly C class (they separated us from the A's in case we infected them with our low budgets!) and lectures or movies each day. On the way down, we passed glaciers and mountains and even saw dolphins and whales! We had talks on the local indigenous people and glaciation and they were only marred by the rather manly woman in charge of the 'entertainment' who insisted on trying to make really bad jokes every time she spoke which kind of put people off listening to her lectures! We ... read more

Wir waren ... read more

Fri 2/15/08 I can’t believe this trip is all but over. It’s been as good if not better than I expected and though I originally thought it would be a once-in-a-lifetime trip I’m pretty sure I’ll be back if I’m able to in a few years. There’s just so much worth seeing again and lots of things I didn’t have time for in one trip. Antarctica was of course spectacular and my main reason for the trip but South America was much more of a surprise. Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay are not the third world countries most of us expected and in fact have worked their ways to fairly stable economies and most of the areas we visited were safe, friendly, and beautiful. Definitely worth taking a further look at in future trips. Wednesday was another ... read more

Marcelo oli minua vastassa kentalla. Menimme bussilla keskustaan. Ilta vietettiin sitten Alercen lahiossa. Alerce on suomeksi lehtikuusi.
