After the tears of my leaving party I headed to Minas Gerais on the overnight bus. Another joyous trip sitting beside some bloke that encroached on my space and snored in my ear the entire 7 hour trip. To add to the ambience I was sitting opposite the toilet which was being frequented by numerous people with travel sickness!! Arrived into Ouro Preto and 6.10am - a little tired. Kate and I found the bakery and had some breakfast then started our sightseeing at 7.30am as recommended by the guidebook. We did have 23 churches to visit after all! It's a really pretty place. Cobbled streets and nice buildings but a lot of hills. By the time we were ready to get the bus I don't think there was a hill we hadn't been up and ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Lençóis July 17th 2006

The 7:00 am departure on Real Expresso from Salvador to Lençóis should be known as the European Express. Fully booked with Danes, Italians, British, and Dutch, it is only the Brazilian merchant getting off in dusty Feira de Santana that seems out of place. Otherwise, passengers are destined for Bahia’s Chapada Diamantina, a national park. It attracts naturalists and trekkers who explore its undisturbed wilderness. Most ignore the appalling slums of suburban Salvador, which spread almost fifteen miles to the west of the city. I could not. How could I? How could anyone? Thousands of people live on top of each other in squalor. Some “homes” have an electrical connection. By the looks of it, running water is not too potable; weathered and gristled women line up at a public fountain and fill up three or ... read more

Here are some more pictures of Rio, having incredible time although Max, Rory and Ben left on the 3rd and am missing them loads. Hope the move to the country went well and that you have commenced jam making sen!!! And Wiggles hope the training is going well, miss you! Spent my 23rd birthday sailing around Rio drinking Caipirinhas, was such an amazing day with big group of people from the hostel and some of them organized a cake for me at which point I apparently became quite emotional and kept talking about how much this display of kindness from strangers meant to me!!! oh dear! Anyway after several more nights out in Rio (the 2 big J´s will be pleased to know only takes me 3 Caipirinhas to get hammered!! so my drinking has not ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador July 15th 2006

Descending over the Bahia Todos os Santos reveals an eye-popping view of a bustiling metropolis of skyscrapers, towering apartment complexes and dingy slums. Paraphrasing one of the great American orators of our time, Ray Nagin, Salvador is a chocolate city. This is not the place to come if you are uncomfortable around people of color. I am the only fair-skinned resident in the neighborhood except for the passing taxi drivers and the British couple with me in the Hotel Maridina. The shift in environment sets a new, exciting tone of discovery. Shops, kiosks, and stands spill onto the sidewalks. Vendors peddle anything and everything that could possibly be sold. The scene is chaotic, yet oddly under control. As a first impression, Salvador overloads the senses with an excess of loud whistles, human commotion of a darker ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Ilha Grande July 15th 2006

With a steaming hangover and after only 2 hours sleep, we woke at 4.30 to grab a cab to Rio´s terminal omnibus only to be given the run around trying to find the right kiosk to buy our tickets. Eventually we navigated our way to the right departure point and boarded our 3 hour coach to Angra dos Reis, the port at which we were to get our ferry to Ilha Grande. Having known a little Spanish already, we found the portuguese of Brazil a totally different prospect and it was beginning to knock my multilingual confidence. Thankfully we were lucky to meet up with a lovely Belgian couple who spoke good Portuguese and spent a couple of hours sitting at the port waiting for our ferry. As we sat on the front of the schooner ... read more
