South America » Brazil » Rio Grande do Norte » Natal August 1st 2006

In addition to sightseeing, another unfortunate yet inevitable circumstance of traveling is falling ill. While well-equipped with antibiotics, my insight into Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte, has been limited to transiting between the bus station and my accommodation, and from the front balcony of my guesthouse to the toilet. I have had one uneventful night out. In my two days, I confess to know nothing of Natal except its lackluster downtown and a package tourism scene that attracts as many single men from Northern Italy as it does hordes of local prostitutes. The best result I could wish for in Natal was to wait for the Cipro to take effect and keep moving north to Ceará. In winter, non-Brazilians flock to Ponta Negra, eight miles or so south of downtown, to enjoy the hollowness ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro July 31st 2006

Well, it's nearly the end of my South American trip. I fly home tomorrow and I've spent the last week or so in Rio de Janeiro. It's a huge place, there's lots to do here and I've spent a lot of time walking around and seeing the sights. I'm staying in Ipanema which has a good beach as well as lots of cafes, restaurants and bars, and it's next to Copacabana with its 4km stretch of sandy beach. I've done the obligatory tourist things - I went up to see the Statue of Christ at Corcovado and I took the cablecar up Sugarloaf Mountain at sunset. It was my birthday while I was here and I went out with a load of people from the hostel where I'm staying to a lively place called Lapa where ... read more

NEXT STOP...........Rio de Janeiro. After our very long bus ride and several stops at juicy meat restaurants, we made it to Rio. We were in luck, Nadja spoke to an old friend who lives in Rio and they invited us to their luxurious flat on the Copacabana, the place where music and passion are always in fashion. This family even has an elevator that comes right into the house.NNIIICCEEE! We had an absolutely fabulous time at their place. On the first day we went straight to the famous beaches of the copacabana and Ipanema. The weather on day one was great. The beaches filled with thongs, thongs and more thongs. Beautiful toned bodies everywhere. Brazilians love to flex their muscles and play football on the beach. On a good day you can see the makings of ... read more

Yesterday was Fred´s grand party. For the last 4 years, him and his girlfriend´s family have been putting on these cultural parties where everyone is to dress-up like they are from the country (plad shirt, straw hat, patched jeans), dance Forró and eat and drink lots of good food and beer/pinga. I was helping Fred all day prepare for the party getting the drums and chairs and tables. His band was going to play so they rented a huge sound system. The party was great... a lot of friends from work came. At the end of the bands first set Fred calls me up on stage. Again I was introduced as the special guest from Canada. We had planned to do a little joke for everyone. I said something short into the microphone thanking the host ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Lençóis July 30th 2006

For those of you who love the outdoors or cool things in general, have I got a city for you, Lençóis, Bahia. It´s a very small town far inside the Bahian sertão, really an oasis of sorts. The Chapada da Diamatina is an expanse of mountains and valleys that are home to a vast number of different natural habitats. Way back when (i.e. Pangea time, the supercontinent and all), the area was connected to Nambia in Africa. There was a big boom in the region when diamonds were discovered, but it died out somewhat quickly when more diamonds were found in--guess where--Africa. Today Lençóis attracts backpackers from all over the world. The small town has a very bohemian, hippie vibe. Everyone is very laid back, lots of vegetarian restaurants, Asian restaurants, etc. My first morning there ... read more

Hi again, Soz have been out of contact for a while- travelblog gets out of hand, I fall behind and then it´s just way too much effort to know where to begin to write... Anyhoo, have now left Justo again- a week and 2 days ago in Rurrenabaque, Bolivia. It was very sad to leave him because we don´t know when we´ll see each other again. I´m going home this day in 7 weeks and he´s in La Paz, going onto Peru and I´m in Brasil again. Missing him, but when we do see each other we fight so we´re probably better off separately. Miss you loads though dear. 20/08/06 Anyway got bus up to Guayaramerin in Bolivia, bus kept breaking down all the way and so anyway took fecking ages but made friends with 4 ... read more

Still ponds draped in vines and submerged palm trees create a natural and paradise-like backdrop for the exploration and appreciation of a tropical Brazilian island. Neat rows of corn are ready for harvest, as is the ripe and exotic (but sour) fruit of the acerola tree. The children who live in Pequeno Nazareno get around by foot or bicycle. The adults who look after them make use of very little motorized traffic themselves. On lazy mornings before class, the boys fish for freshwater shrimp in the central pond near the slide and diving board. It is the focal point for living quarters, schoolhouses, a cantina, and the main entrance of the compound. Well maintained ashen brick roads connect these and other points to form a model community of which its founders and managers are extremely proud. ... read more
