So ilhabela was beautiful! An island paradise. We pitched up at our hostal and headed straight to the beach. That evening we had some amazing seafood and a couple of good beers for good measure. The next day was pretty much suncream-sunbathe-swim-repeat!! Just what the doctor ordered! Over the next few days this is pretty much how it went. We did hire some bikes and found ourselves on a private beach after nearly killing Jo going up hill on a bike. However the best day was when we tried to watch the rugby in a pub and failed! So we took our bikes for a short ride (according to the map) to one of ilhabela's many beautiful waterfalls. When we set off it was fine, nice and flat but really hot and sticky. This only got ... read more

Port 15: Tuesday 21st. & 22nd. February: Brazil: Rio de Janeiro: again we were up early to watch as we sailed into Rio de Janeiro and viewed "Christ the Redeemer" statue on the hill in the distance and so far away my camera would not focus clearly on it. Somehow we missed booking a tour to the statue so wondering what to do we decide to visit the new Aquarium within a short walking distance from the ship. Set up on 3 levels and starting at the top we wended our way down admiring the setup and displays along the way with seats at intervals so one could sit and watch the creatures. Lovely aquarium with plenty of cafes and clean toilets. The showtime tonight was Brasileirissimo: local dancers and performers giving us a wonderful time ... read more

Life as I know it... The last post on this blog has been a while back. After Tatiana and I finished our one year travels I did not consider posting anymore here, as this was for our common journey. Soon it will be 4 years ago that we returned from this amazing trip, and enough time has passed to tell you (or my future self for that matter) about the difficulties of returning. As amazing as everything about travelling is, the last months of a one year long journey get difficult. You fancy leaving the backpack in a corner and not pick it up again for months, you fancy conditioner, putting on lotion all over your mosquito bite-covered body without getting all sticky within minutes because of the heat, you fancy a comfortable bed, good coffee, ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » Ilhabela February 8th 2017

So after a few days of chilling in the rather hot Brazilian sun and going a bit pink in places we were headed onto another bus for São Paulo. This bus journey was probably the scariest we had been on. The bus kept stopping every half an hour with people either rushing on or rushing off the bus. We were held at a military check point for ages in the dark. With the help of google translate we managed to ask a local, what the hell was going on! Turns out the people running on and off the bus were smuggling contraband and the bus company was helping them!! This continued through out the night so unfortunately no sleep for us! Having done some googling I found out São Paulo is the biggest shipping port in ... read more

28th Chinese New Year This is the year of the Rooster, the zodiac animal that is trustworthy, has a strong sense of timekeeping and is responsible at work (side note: I am an earth dragon... Just Like Jesus :) The Chinese New Year is based on a lunar cycle that goes through twelve animals. It is celebrated throughout China and the Chinese diaspora. CNY is celebrated with firecrackers, red packets, and lion dances, among other things. The legend goes that a village was being attacked by a Nian, a mythical creature that would take children and destroy property. An old man swore he would rid the village of the Nian. The Nian was afraid of loud noises and the colour red, so he hung up red sheets and set of firecrackers all night. To celebrate, my ... read more

... read more

Manaus is a little bit dull but it has several million inhabitants, a very nice Opera house and science institution with giant otters and mantee, unfortunately for us it was closed, so we decided to move on to Rio early Christmas morning. Rio is like a beautiful woman it just takes your breath away, the forests, mountains, beaches and just the vibe of the inhabitants is intoxicating even for someone like me who thinks they have seen it all. We took the cable car to the top of the Sugar loaf discovered a troop of cotton top tamarins and just marvelled at the wonderful panoramas. Next we visited Copacabana perhaps my favourite beach to feel and experience the beach culture that is clearly the passion of this city. Ensconced in one of the many beachside bars ... read more

8 Sept. thru 27 Oct. 2016 Brazil, a country of 200 million people where the divide between the Rich and Poor is very evident. Favelas dot the hills around the city of Rio and we are warned by many people not to enter , otherwise we will not come out alive. I personally, have no problems with these warnings, I wouldn't go to Compton or Watts in Los Angeles either! Our Brazil experience will be different from the month in Argentina. I have arranged 3 house swaps (Homeexchange.com) that will take us from Rio to Buzios and back to Rio. However, just to be a little different we also spent 4 nights in a Paraty hotel. Our first stop in Rio is Barra da Tijuca, its in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro and is ... read more

Day 15 is over here in Rio and tomorrow will be the final day of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Looking back its hard to believe we visited the Olympic Park for the very last time. Hard to believe there won't be Beach Volleyball on tonight and into the wee hours of the morning at Copacabana Beach. Hard to believe the thousands of athletes that have poured their heart and soul into the past 4 years leading up to these Games will finish up tomorrow and head home to re-evaluate and re-charge. For us, the Games here in Rio have been nothing short of incredible. Our experience here in Rio has been first-rate. We've learned so much about this South American country, its people and the beautiful City that has played host to the world for ... read more
