South America cruise: Part 5

Brazil

Port 15: Tuesday 21st. & 22nd. February: Brazil: Rio de Janeiro: again we were up early to watch as we sailed into Rio de Janeiro and viewed "Christ the Redeemer" statue on the hill in the distance and so far away my camera would not focus clearly on it. Somehow we missed booking a tour to the statue so wondering what to do we decide to visit the new Aquarium within a short walking distance from the ship. Set up on 3 levels and starting at the top we wended our way down admiring the setup and displays along the way with seats at intervals so one could sit and watch the creatures. Lovely aquarium with plenty of cafes and clean toilets.

The showtime tonight was Brasileirissimo: local dancers and performers giving us a wonderful time of entertainment of colour dance and music.

Next morning was early start for a city tour then to Sugar Loaf Mountain via the 2 cable cars. Magnificent views over the city and bays, beaches and islands with planes flying below us when coming into the airport. Beautiful. Touring on we visited Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.

Port 16: Friday 24th. February: Brazil: Salvador:

Inside the Cathedral
A variety of buildings here with grand places among the derelict areas. The slums have been converted into homes for the disadvantaged: People own the home, pay taxes, have electricity, running water and sewerage. Gives them something to take responsibility of and pride in. Our tour today took us walking through the old town - up and over cobblestones of all shapes and sizes, past interesting shops and lanes, churches and squares to the Elevador Lacerda which took us down to the markets.

Port 17: Monday 27th. February: Brazil: Fortaleza: Up early again to look around as we came into port - mmm. We were on tour through a very dirty city with more rubbish, graffiti and dirt here than we had seen elsewhere + polluted beaches and were advised not to go wandering by ourselves. Past massive condominiums to the "closed" cathedral so on to and into the theatre that was worth a visit and where my "birthday" photo was taken. A "never to be repeated" day. On the way back to the ship we stopped at the markets - huge area and multi story with hundreds of stalls inside and linen to die for + so much
