David here... The taxi arrived promptly at 05:00, an obscene time to have to get up, but it was the cheapest flight from Salvador to Rio. The airport and flight were both fine. Once at Rio airport we found the BRT ticket booth at the far end of the hall and bought tickets for the bus, which was waiting outside at the platform. The Rio BRT service is exactly like the Bogota Transmilenio service, where you purchase a card and amount of journeys you want and you scan your card to get onto the platform. One card for as many people as you like. The 30 semi-directo bus was the one in so we just jumped on. We were soon on our way and following our route on the map on the bus. This bus didn't ... read more

Suzanne here... It took much longer to get to Salvador than anticipated. Brazil is vast, so even a domestic flight took two and a half hours. Then once at Salvador airport we chose our usual money-saving bus instead of taxi option. It was easy enough to get the bus (straight through the multistory carpark in front of arrivals then turn right - no signs but easy to find). The bus was cheap, but it did go the long way round so took over an hour to reach the Centro Historico. But on a budget it is probably the right choice. Originally we were going to head north of Salavador for a couple of days. But then we read about Morro de Sao Paulo, on the island of Tinhare. It sounded lovely, so we revised our plans. ... read more

David here... The flight from Santa Cruz to Sao Paulo was over 2 hours, our longest flight for a while (and number 28 of this trip - so far, so many more than we envisaged). The checks at Santa Cruz airport took a long time, including a narco check, where every bag was checked and then random person searches took place as well. Suzanne spotted what was going to happen next but I didn't so was shocked when one of the attendants made a beeline for me and dragged me into a room to be searched. It was only an over the clothes search but being directed to a small room in a foreign land is never a good thing and the nerves do start jangling a little. The flight itself was fine, we had the ... read more

If this is Wednesday, then it must be Salvador, Brazil. This is the equivalent of being in Aruba if you are only looking at position north of the equator. When we made our list of places to visit during our lifetime, Salvador wasn’t anywhere on that list – mostly because we’d never heard of it. Now we’ve been here and can rest at ease even if we never get back again. It is an interesting place. The population is more than 2.5 million, so it is one of the biggest places we’d never heard of before. There was a lengthy history of events, from explorers making the first real discovery of South America, through a long and much larger slave trade, being the first capital of Brazil (before that was moved to Rio), and finally have ... read more

Geo: -12.9704, -38.5124Well here we are in Salvador Brazil. This is our last port in South America been a beautiful experience. Mike, Carol and Dave took a walk around the area near the port. They wandered around in the general direction of "the elevator". This is a public means of getting up from the port to the ridge. It cost 0.15 Real which is about 7 cents- if you have a Real - or three for a US dollar since they didn't give out change all for a ride to the top with 40 of our newest friends. Trying to hold your breath was one option. Everywhere there were friendly folks who wanted to take us all over town or have a picture taken or sell us trinkets - from China. There were some old churches ... read more

This is day-2 of Rio. It was our last overnight in-port for this cruise. It was a nice smooth night without the ship rocking or anything. As explained yesterday, Janet did not have a tour today, but David still had to report to the Fusion Lounge at 7:00. He got up early and had a light breakfast in the Horizon Court and then brought a breakfast sandwich, chocolate donut, and a cup of tea back to the cabin for Janet. She has her sandwich and then followed doctor’s orders and went back to bed. She got a good restful morning and by the time David got back she was feeling much better. Maybe it was partly due to the sage advice she’s received from Stephanie about following doctor’s orders and you would recover more quickly. David’s ... read more

Hello from Rio de Janeiro Brazil. You can add another new country to our ever-grown list. And to get the details out of the way, it was hot here today (38C – 100F). That is partly because Rio is as far south of the equator as Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is north. So we are getting closer and closer to the equator, which is always fairly warm. The ship sailed slowly into the bay and nestled up alongside the pier just before 8:00 – as planned. We have two days in Rio, so we split our two main objectives and only planned to do one each day. That meant today’s 4-hour excursion was to gather at 8:30. We went to the Horizon Court for a light breakfast, expecting to be back from out tour about 1:00. ... read more
