Ahh, another of the biggest cities in the world and this is big...everything is big.....and its also pretty cool...We are at 22,000 and something kms and about day 150!...luckily guided in from the coast by Felipé with a bit of blue material sticking out the back of his car as its identical to 50 million other small black chevvies on this road...we pushed on from wherever we stopped in the last episode..its getting harder and harder to remember names of places...we play games with each other by asking..(and theres no parentheses on this keyboard!) :what was the name of the place we stayed 2 (or 3 or 4 or even 1) night ago?:..crazy..so many fantastic places here in Brasil, still knocked out by the friendliness of everyone...and the beauty of the scenery..boom boom. We rode nearly ... read more

Day 6 We arrived in Sao Paulo and had a walk around. It felt really unsafe and wasn´t a particularly nice looking city. We went to the highest building in Sao paulo (Edificio Italia) to look out over the whole of Sao Paulo - it is absolutely massive, stretching to the horizon in every direction you looked. We then watched the sun go down over the city and had a few drinks in the very expensive bar! Day 7 We made our way adventure stylee to the snake farm which was in the middle of nowhere to see lots of different snakes. Scarily enough, pretty much all of them live in Brazil!! The snake farm is where they milk the snake´s venom to make anti-venom but unfortuntately we didn´t get to see that. We then took ... read more

We spent two nights in Sao Paulo en route to Rio. It was, as expected, not a particularly nice city. It was busy and didn´t feel especially safe, particularly at night. We checked out the view of the entire city from ´Edifico Italia´(their equivalent of the Empire State Building), the city is truly enormous. Not much else to say about Sao Paulo really, at least it broke up the long journey to Rio. ... read more

On Thursday night (3rd November) I went out to dinner at a typical Brazilian pub with Bira's family and the German Contingent ("GC") Bira's brother Fernando married his German girlfriend, Catrin, the weekend before I arrived so a group of about 12 had come over from Germany. Steffi, a friend of Catrin's from Germany with whom I became acquainted when she was living in Melbourne, was amongst the GC. I have much admiration and respect for Steffi due to the fact that although she has a hearing disability her command of the English language is so superb that I originally mistook her as being a native Australian! She has a beautiful nature and is one of the most interesting people I have met. Steffi and I shared our thoughts about São Paulo and she told me ... read more

Below are three photographs taken from the balcony of one of Bira's apartments in Santo André - located in a building called Grã Bretanha (literally Great Britian in Portuguese). The top photograph is of a tiny little favela located in a small park in this middle-class residential area. I am fascinated by favelas and the people who live in them.... read more

Today I visited my first Brazilian supermarket with Bira's mother, Magali. There were 50 checkouts. Yes, FIFTY CHECKOUTS. The supermarket had entire aisles dedicated solely to pasta (even Barilla, my favourite & the only one I buy), aisles dedicated solely to cheese, aisles dedicated solely to mayonnaise, aisles dedicated solely to biscuits... need I go on? There was even a fountain spouting red wine and forget FlyBuys - they have cars instead. Yeah, buy enough and you'll get a car. The fruit section of the supermarket was about the size of a normal ordinary Safeway. The meat section is a carnivore's paradise. And as for the laundry & cleaning products, obsessive compulsive cleaners such as myself would find themselves in paradise amongst all the sprays, liquids, gels... oh and Jif is called Cif in Brazil. And ... read more

After a few hiccups regarding baggage allowance at Tullamarine airport, I board an Emirates flight for Auckland - the first leg of my journey to São Paulo, Brasil. The flight was amazing, Emirates' services is fantastic and they cured my fear of flying. However, I had to sit next to a really floppy-skinned obese woman (younger than me!) with bad body odour, flatulence (silent but deadly would be an appropriate description) and that annoying foot tapping habit which is customary of sufferers of constipation. Arriving in Auckland, I had 3 hours to spare so went off for a relaxing massage which saw me board my next flight, with Aerolineas Argentina, in a totally blissed out state. On this flight I sat next to an ex-NZ rugby player with a penchant for lavender oil. As I never ... read more

Well, I have arrived... Everything so far has been great (appart from the weather). Anderson´s family and friends have been feeding me great food and showing me how to make Minas cheese bread (tastes really good). Elizangela and me have been spending time getting on way too many buses and missing stops and generally behaving like nutters! Love it... Anyway, just wanted to put a really boring first entry to see if it works and stuff. I hope everybody in the Uk is ok...... read more

I snap out of my fixation on the favela, and enter Carol´s 1998 green Corsa. Giselle, Carol, and I are on our way to Carol´s hometown, Sao Jose dos Campos. The driving in Brazil is freaking nuts, but we can get into that later. We get to Sao Jose dos Campos and decide to get something to eat at the mall. Carol takes a ticket from the parking lot attendant. I ask her how much it costs to park and she says it doesn't cost anything. Why the ticket, you ask? Good question. Just about every parking lot has a person at the entrance handing out tickets, and someone at the exit collecting tickets. They are a defense against theft, to ensure the person who drove into the parking lot is the same person who drives ... read more
