Carol, Giselle, and I walk out of the airport on a cool, overcast day. At this point it is around 2:00. I look around and take in my first impressions of Brazil. Across the road in the distance I can see a favela. Favelas are Brazilian shanty towns. While every major city has favelas, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo have the largest. Poor farmers, migrating from the destitue interior of the northeast make up the greatest percent of the population. Many of these northeasterners have a distorted view of the reality of Sao Paulo, and Rio. The cities are seen as places overflowing with jobs and money- reminding me of the early stories of America having streets paved with gold. Those who migrate seldom have the skills, or the family network to overcome the large ... read more

After flying for 11 hours and over 4500 kilomet er uh 2500 miles, I arrived on the 19th of October in Sao Paulo. The flight was 30 minutes a head of schedule, I breezed through immigration, and when my black pleather bag was one of the first around the conveyor belt I was pretty optimistic about this Brazil thing. I changed some dollars for reis (about 2.1-2.3 reis per dollar) and I headed out to the terminal excited to see the familiar face of my ex-girlfriend Carol. What was my ex-girlfriend doing picking me up at the airport? Well.... Carol and I had dated for around a year, but we broke up about three months before my departure. We had been together for around 6 months when I started telling friends and relatives of my plans ... read more

So here we are on the last day of our trip around the world. We are currently in Sao Paulo, Brazil and this blog entry will be for our last night in India, 2 days in Vienna, Austria and a short paragraph on Sao Paulo. Our flight from Delhi, India to Vienna, Austria did not leave until 1:50am, so we had a night to go explore the city (Sunday night). It happened to be that we were in Delhi during a 9-day religious celebration for the Hindus. During this time, they decorate the Temples with lights at night and mobs of people go to the Temples to celebrate. I hired a car to take us to the largest of the Temples in Delhi and to a local bazaar where local people go to buy crafts. After ... read more

Today has been fantastic. While I was on MSN Messenger I got in contact with my friend who lives in Bahia and she said that she would be picking me up from the airport. This is wonderful. As you all know this will be my first time in Bahia and there is no better way to get to know a city than to have someone who lives there to show you the way. After having received all this good news, I then decided that I would make my way to Berrini Ave. (one of the main financial centers in SP) and go visit my old work buddies. So, first I stopped by the English language institute where I used to work and then by the consulting firm. It was great. Everyone was very surprised to see ... read more

The last 24 hours have been exciting but have also reminded me of two of life´s infamous sayings. How many times have you returned to a place that was once a stomping ground but is now a memory in the past? You return with the memories you last had of the place and for some reason you expect nothing to have changed although it makes no logical sense since as we all know (1), "The only constant in life is change." Being a mid-twenty year-old, this phase of my life and the lives of my friends is about finding the path, the patner, and the clearness of mind to forge a life. So, naturally my friends and myself are taking steps forward and then back and then forward again, all with the expectation that eventually we ... read more

Faith has returned to me the task of updating the blog. I was amazed by the amount of detail in Faith´s descriptions and I have to tell you that unfortunately I won´t continue on the same note. The outcome of the visa application with the American Consulate in São Paulo. My worries turned out to be highly unjustified. After a three hour wait they called my number (136 and that´s because I arrived one hour before the appointed time). The interview took 30 seconds. The interviewer had no idea what what I was there for even though he had all the documents beforehand. He asked a total of two questions, the first was whether I was renewing my student visa and the second was how long I had studied in the US, which is a complicated ... read more

well its been a while but im afraid we have come to an end. This the 19th is our last day! The emails begging our parents for extra money so we could stay here an extra month, or 6 failed so we are on our way home this afternoon. Its been an adventure, but its okay because now we are planning our next one. last minute dash We´re in Rio again now but getting here was a bit of a struggle, with less than 10 days to go we suddenly realised that we were in Peru, humm, so a taxi to Bolivia (yes a taxi from Peru to Bolivia!!!) was in order and then a bus to La Paz. In La Paz we did last min shopping, and spent a little (*cough* lot *cough*) too much ... read more

They have a huge statue here of a bandeirante - a what, you ask? A portuguese mercenary from colonial days who hacked through the rainforest and murdered or sold into slavery tribe after tribe of indigenous peoples. Largely responsible for the depopulation of vast tracts of land and thus for securing much of Brazil’s current domain for the Portuguese. Jesuit missionaries tried to protect the locals in their forts and missionary towns, so the bandeirantes murdered them all too, and the govt kicked the rest of the jesuits out for interfering with the officially sanctioned rape and pillage of a continent. The snack bar across the street is also named in honor of the bandeirante. Its interesting what people value here. ... read more

Geez, people are nice here. Really frickin’ small town wave and nod and say good morning and give you the restroom key at the gas station before you ask and joke around with you when you bump into them on the sidewalk nice. In one of the biggest cities in the world. Amazing. How do they do it? Its especially interesting bc people in Rio are so markedly not nice... (i have a theory about that - i think it has to do with the way the cities are laid out.) ... read more

São Paolo: Social Observations Part I: The Museum. (NB this entry is long) Bruno’s anxiety over his VISA interview had been growing steadily over the month of August but reached its peak in São Paolo. He spent a lot of time staring off into the distance and even said at times that he wasn’t hungry (!!!!). Yes, a true rarity for the Brumaster. So what could we do to distract him? We went to a museum about São Paolo and Brazil in the nineteenth century. It’s housed in a building that was supposed to replicate the palace at Versailles, but they ran out of funds and instead ended up with an abbreviated version. The model that they had constructed, which took the two years initially allotted for the construction of the actual building, is on display ... read more
