Day 122 Friday 10th February Jumped out of bed and went to breakfast about 7.00am for the last time in Curitiba as we are off to Sao Paulo today. We did the final packing, paid the hotel bill and were out the door and into a taxi to the bus station. In Brazil so far the bus tickets have the platform number so we know where exactly to stand, unlike Argentina that gives you a range so you have to keep an eye open. The security to get on the bus was the same as Foz with us having to show our passports to get on. This bus was very nice with plenty of leg room and the air conditioning running all the time, which is a bonus on a crowded bus on a ... read more

Menudo cambio.... Y a mi no trató mal. El uno momento delicado fué con Matti saliendo del parque Trianon. A plena luz ... read more

I am beginning to think I may be a lazy person. I have spent the last five days just lazing around Sao Paulo doing nothing in particular. I am currently staying with my friend in his apartment. Its great since he is from Brazilian and lives here he knows all the places to go. That way I don't really have to worry about walking into a bad situation. We walk around the city streets, deserted and crowded, and don't have any problem. Anyway my impression of Sao Paulo is that it is kind of a place where people like being trendy and like to dress well in comparison to Rio. They pride themselves on their business acumen and money making skills. Centro is a dump, but the area where my friend lives is great. Quite safe ... read more

06.10. 3 hour bus trip and 1.5 hour boat trip to Ilha Grande, one of the most beautiful Islands in Brazil. The bus was tiny and so was the boat, it was more like a dingy than a boat really. Lol but the sun was out again, so caught a little suntan on the way over to the Island. Ilha Grande has no cars and no proper roads, just a really chilled out place to relax. Lots of nice restaurants, a few bars and many trekking routes around the Island. We stayed at the Beergarden hostel, which was only built in 2010, so brand new beds and restaurant, a great place for 24 rais a night. We had a stroll around the centre, went down the beach for a beer and an acai and had some ... read more

So this past weekend I went to São Paulo and I stayed with Douglas' brother, his wife Maristela, and their son Diego who is my age. In Brazil, people usually live at home while they go to college and don't usually move out of their parents' house until they get married. I can't understand why they don't want to get out and be independent. They can't understand why I'd want to give up cleanliness and home-cooked meals and free rent, and I.....ok I think they might be onto something. ANYWAY: I had an awesome weekend. Friday morning I got up early and explored downtown Campinas with Sonia (and the BEAUTIFUL cathedral that I forgot to take my camera to). Then I went to the hospital with the dogs and had to go back to the Mental ... read more

I've been settling into Brazilian life pretty well...I technically have 3 jobs but one hasn't started yet so pretty busy! Wednesday and Friday I leave at 7am for Campinas. In the morning I hang out at this organization called Vovo Nestor and they do things like arts and crafts and dance classes for the poor people that live in that area. Then at 1pm I go to pick up dogs from a local vet and bring them to the hospital. Wednesday is a children's hospital and Friday is a big hospital with everything. This is my favorite part of the day. While most of the people we see are different every week, some people are really ill and live in the hospital. These people (mostly kids with really bad disabilities) are hooked up to a machine ... read more

This past week has been good. A few days ago I went to work with Angela's sister-in-law Sonia, who is a social worker. She works for a foundation that organizes activities for old people who don't have anything....like arts and crafts, dancing, etc. It's right next door to a big school for children with disabilities and I think she does stuff for the parents of those children too. Anyway, she doesn't speak English, and neither did anybody there. We went to the school/hospital (its called APAE pronounced like "a pie"). I think she and I both just thought we could take a quick look, but the director came out and we ended up getting a whole tour. I went to every single clinical and class room, and met almost every single kid. A thousand kids go ... read more

Today is my third day in Brazil! I am already starting to speak English in my head with a Portuguese accent. The first thing I learned was that Brazilians understand Spanish, but if you speak Spanish you can't understand Portuguese. So I guess this is what you would call intensive language immersion. Douglas and Angela have been so nice and welcoming. They are helping me find a job teaching english and working at a children's cancer hospital. They have two daughters, Alicia is 11 and Marina is 4. I live in a really cool neighborhood in a small town about an hour away from Sao Paulo, the big city (bigger than LA). The neighborhood has its own lake and a FOREST FULL OF MONKEYS. Yeah, I have monkeys in my backyard. NBD. Yesterday was the Brazilian ... read more
