Well the weather is finally behaving itself and I have been taking full advantage! It’s hard to believe it’s November; it’s weird walking down the road in shorts and t-shirt and seeing the city begin to be decorated - lights decorate the streets and snowmen and Santa Claus adorn many shops! Even more strange considering they don’t even get snow here - I guess it just shows the American/European influence! I also don’t have any lessons any more! My Spanish teacher has had to give up teaching for a while due to illness and in true Brazilian fashion they’re not bothered about giving us a substitute! Though I still have my art class on Mondays, so at least it’s only a six day weekend! It’s actually rather annoying as I like to be busy and I’m ... read more

I’ve been exploring the island and its beaches a little, not enough yet, but as it’s only spring the weather isn’t always great! My flatmate Patricia took me on a bit of a whirlwind tour of the popular surfista beaches - beautiful scenery and beautiful people! It was so nice to just sit on the beach, having a waiter bring lots of ice cold beer and battered shrimp - not a bad way to spend the day! We’ve been to explore the beaches south of island - which I’ve heard are more natural and less touristy - perfect! And it was stunning! Though slightly marred by the fact that there were cars parked on the beach?! We went with some of Pati’s friends to meet some other international friends who were staying in a pousada down ... read more

A beautiful island with over 40 beaches, friendly people, dangerous drivers and a very relaxed attitude… They really don’t get the concept of being in a rush, there are huge surfer and hippy influences, and everyone is either stoned, drunk on beer, or both about 90% of the time… My first impressions of this place was how influenced it is by Europe - loads of German and Italian immigrants came here back in the day, and really kept their ways - meaning loads of ice-cream, cakes, pizza, and the biggest Oktoberfest outside of Berlin! There’s also a big North American influence here which can be seen from the massive malls… Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like I’m in South America, but then you go to a samba club or a churrascuria and it brings you right ... read more

Well I am having a very nostalgic day today - I am unexpectedly on a wet and rainy beach in Brasil. Unexpectedly, because I had planned to be in Buenos Aires instead but got sidetracked so let me explain… After returning to Salta from our road trip I was in two minds as to what to do next. Anthea left to go to Bolivia and tried to persuade me just to dip into Bolivia for a week to do a trip around the salt flats with her and then go back to Salta. However it was my Grandmas 80th birthday on the 4th of July and I was afraid I would be stuck in the middle of nowhere without being able to call her on the day (I was already feeling terrible for not being ... read more

It seems that buses have now become the pain in our travelling experiences! On checking out of the hostel in Puerto Iguazu we go into town to book our coach trip for that evening, but are told we should just buy it at teh Brazilian bus station as there are more bus companies there! So we do just that. Over the border once more, passports stamped and to the bus station. Only when we get there, there are still only 2 bus companies that go where we want to go and all the buses that go direct to Florianopolis - where we want to go - are full!! We have a mild panic, unsure of what to do, which is made worse by the fact that here they speak Portuguese not Spanish! Though my Spanish was ... read more

Iguassu Falls Well, we weren't so lucky with the weather for our visit to the Brazilian side. Like fools we hoped for the best and headed out in just our T-Shirts, and got absolutely soaked through! Luckily seeing the Brazilian side doesn't require anywhere near as much time as the Argentinian side ... you get more of an overview, whereas on the Arg side you get to go in, around and even under a lot more. We got a great view of Garganta del Diablo from the Brazilian side though ... you can see the shape of the falls .. and the smaller cascades that make it up. That night we headed back to the Argentinian side to grab our bags ... before heading back over the border to Brazil (i know!!!) to catch the ... read more

After numerous visits to beaches to which I've simply turned up my nose and instantly dismissed, getting to Armacao Beach on Santa Catarina Island in Brazil was a most refreshing surprise. This was an island paradise of the highest order. Everything about the place was just perfect. It was undeveloped enough to preserve an isolated and very laid-back feel, but at the same time had enough good cheap food options to keep me very well fed. Top of the list was the local pizza buffet which had some amazing pizzas, most notably the chocolate pizzas with ice-cream they served for dessert. I'm not normally much of a sweet-tooth but these were absolutely incredible. Upon arrival at Bell's Company Hostel, the first person I met when I walked in was 'Gecko', the bloke who managed the ... read more

Thursday 19th April to Saturday 27th April, 2007. Five days to go, almost time to return to the UK and I´m afraid I cannot say, other than for the most obvious of reasons of seeing family and friends, that I am particularily looking forward to my return. As I write this I am sat alone in the warmth of Stella´s Renault Megane looking out at an angry Atlantic venting it´s fury on nothing but a handful of bored looking seagull´s, a couple of wrapped up and optimistic anglers casting off the rocks and a huge expanse of deserted white sand. Three days of cloudy skies has heralded the onset of Winter for Florianopolis and today is more reminiscent of a chilly and blustery late Autumn day at Cromer than the sun baked beach life to ... read more
