So, we're finally here! This is our third and final day here so we do have a bit to tell you now! Getting here from snowy Maryland was no easy feat. We left the farm early Thursday morning arrived at BWI and had to wait for the rainstorms to pass through Atlanta before our Atlanta bound flight would take off. This meant that we eventually touched down in Atlanta at the exact same time our Rio flight was boarding...talk about a mad dash through three terminals!! We made it just as the doors were closing...and more surprisingly even our luggage made it to Rio!!! The flight itself was a comedy. Nobody sat in their designated seats. Jen and I boarded the plane to discover that a family had already made themselves comfortable where we should have ... read more

I would just like to say thank you to everyone who came out and made my various leaving do's (there did seem to be quite a few) so much fun. Thanks for all the presents and good wishes, especially the ipod that everyone put so much work into adding the music to. I have finally arrived in Rio, a little later than i had expected but feeling better for having proven the temporal version of the butterfly effect. Now i know that you my friends that have known me for years will treat the rumours that have been circulating with the disdain they deserve. Quite frankly it is ridiculous to claim that an experienced traveller who is setting off on an expedition for a couple of years, one who doesn't know the language of any of ... read more

Ahh...at last, another iconic moment in the trip...(and another misuse of íconic´)..but still a significant milestone in the journey...to get to the most famous and exotic of Brasil´s places..Rio de Janeiro...and just for starters..its not a bloody river at all..the turkey who first landed..way, way back, thought it was and so named it..the next bozo that came along didn´t have the nouse or the courtesy to re-name it...like Porto de Janeiro, no, he wants the first bugger to have wear the ignomy for all time...anyway... Into the most beautiful city in the world, they say.....across the longest bridge in the world maybe..thinking I was back in the Florida keys...on and on, in the distance, the beautiful layout, the buildings, the mountains, the rock features, the fabulous beaches, the city skyline, the cable cars, and the Big ... read more

Day 1 We arrived in Rio in the morning after a 13 hour journey, somehow ended up in a taxi that took us to our hotel. Then we crashed out for a couple of hours. We woke up in the early afternoon and went for a wander round Flemengo and along the beach. Later we went for some dinner, where we started to reallise just how foreign we are. Usually in europe you can muddle you way through and I thought I a basic understanding of Portugese, but appartently not. Watching Carly trying to get her way through a family size Chicken Lasagne was funny though! By the time we were finished it was dark and walking back to the hotel was interesting, there were these people trying to sell stuff on the streets that they ... read more

We arrived in Rio the night before Lorna's birthday and stayed in a truly nasty hostel in Downtown Rio. When we awoke we got out of there very quickly and headed to the posh hotel in Copacabana we had booked as a birthday treat. After exploring the area and enjoying the luxury of the hotel we went for dinner and champagne at a lovely restaurant on Ipanema beach. Lorna had sparklers in her pudding and the waiters sang 'Happy Birthday'. Most of our following time in Rio was spent lazing on the beach and working on our suntans. We were in need of some relaxation time after the hectic schedule in Peru and then travelling through Brazil. For the first few days when the weather wasn't so good the beach was quiet, then when it got ... read more

We had an interesting journey getting to Rio de Janeiro... Arriving about 2 hours early at the airport (as we believed you were supposed to do), we headed for the check-in desk and were a little horrified to be told that our flight had been overbooked and we couldn´t fly until the next day!!! What the!?! So a bit deflated we headed towards another desk where they´d arrange a hotel for the night and compensation for the inconvenience. Maria did a great job of arguing our case (as she would!) and we were more than surprised when they told us we could not only board the flight that night as planned, but that due to lack of seats in economy we'd have to fly Business Class!!! Well, no complaints there!!! Woo-hoo!! So, after a nice glass ... read more

Carol, Giselle and I arrived in Rio around 11:00. The first thing I noticed was the number of people with shirts that read estacionamento- Portuguese for parking. They seemed to be all over the place, and I wondered why there were “so many parking cops.” It turns out they are the humane parking meters of Brazil. When you are parking they guide you into the space, if it is sunny they cover your window with an old piece of cardboard, and when you leave they help you get out of the spot. Nothing in life is free, and the services of these men and women are no exception. The more demand for the parking spot the higher the price, but generally you give pocket change if it is not busy, two or three reais (around ... read more

Arrived at the Botafogo Easy Hostel, set two blocks from the beach. Looked like a proper hostel with lots of people coming in and out of the place, and a bar and mini pool. Went up to Santa Teresa for a proper visit after our Corcovado trip cut our previous visit short. Lin was all smiles on the Tram ride both up and down. Some people are easy to please! We walked through the cobbled streets taking in views of the Favelahs below. Saw the film Á Virgin at 40´ . Gave us alot of laughs and the Portugese subtitles must have got the humour across well, as the audience loved it. Went out for a meal on thursday with Chris and Audrey. Nice to see them again before we left Rio. They directed us to ... read more
