We hadn´t planned on going to Rio just yet...our flight out of Brazil leaves Rio on 8th January and we were going to save it til last. But the promise of dancing in the streets with our friends made the decision easy, so now we have a weekend in Rio to enjoy. We stay in Santa Teresa, a neighbourhood to the north of the famous beaches but next door to Lapa, the heart of Rio´s street party scene. Every weekend the streets around the landmark Arcos do Lapa aqueduct fill with bands of samba drummers and dancing crowds...it´s like a mini Carnaval. We have a crazy capirinha-soaked soaked Friday night and Ritchie Aerosmith Rocks even puts in an appearance...spotted chasing a harassed-looking tequila man down the Escadaria Selarón. We end the night watching the sky get ... read more

Planning a career break has during recent months has in itself proved to be a sizable commitment I’ve already learnt a lot of new skills, the most recent specifically related to new technologies. This week alone I learnt how to persuade 24 CD’s onto my recently purchased MP3 player and now I am setting up a “blog.” From these statements you will have gathered that my husband and I have earned the term “Greypackers”, being a reflection of the fact that we can recall a time when the same musical selection would have required a suitcase full of vinyls and a substantial music centre….. also there would have be no chance of me taking a picture with my phone even if it could be persuaded to work outside the house. So first… a little about our ... read more

Last Leg Rio - by George So to the final leg of our trip. This is not going to be a long write up as we're now back in the UK and we were only there for 4 days anyway! Having had fun in Buenos Aires we headed to our final destination with a bit of trepidation. We put it down to the switch to Portuguese and Rio's reputation as a dangerous place to travel, but I suspect that it was more due to our impending date with reality in the form of a flight back to London... Whilst there we stayed up in Santa Teresa, a very different option to Ipanema or Copacobana, which had a fair amount going for it due to some excellent restaurants and a tram that whisked you straight in to ... read more

Took the ancient tram - the "bonde" back up the hill from town across the old Lapa aqueduct - nail-biting and good vistas. In the evening, after a tipico dinner of fish in coconut cream, cassava and plantain we slept well, despite the arts & culture festival going on next door - interesting. Breakfast in the sun as we like it - Laurent offered me a mouthful of his particularly tasty banana and mid-munch I spied a little monkey in the trees. Around 7 mini-monkeys came when we offered them a banana - called something along the lines of "pacarachas" according to the cook. Now we have to leave this treat-hotel for a hostel - off to see what we can find!... read more

Hello all, Nothing fancy on this very first post. We made it. The longest flight ever for both of us but we did touch down in sunny Rio at 8am this morning. Temperature went up a nice 26°C today and a big sunshine. Not bad for a winter day... Quite a bit of adventure today including making our way from the airport to a hotel at an address even the locals have never heard of by bus and foot. Not possible without the help very smiley, friendly local binmen, especially Paulo! When we arrived, we were told the "Cariocas" (Rio natives) know where the streets are but don't know their names - true! More to come soon.. Later. Lozz x... read more

Oi Gente!! Pericolo é parecchio ... read more

Hello all- well I have finally arrived left for Hethrow about 4am and arrived in Hostel approx midnight so was a very long and knackering journey!! Hostel is nice, clean but rooms are small however, everyone is very friendly. I have been out and walked to Lapa (about 20mins away) this morning to buy some food and have a wonder about so I was very proud of myself when I made it back unscathed and without getting lost!! Rio de Janeiro is really a fantastic place to be. I'm staying in a neighborhood called Santa Tereza, which is the "Bohemian" area of the city. There are really huge old mansions that are beautiful, just in need of a few repairs. Right down the street is a restaurant where you pay for food by the kilo - really cheap and really good! I spent my first day here at Copacabana beach, which was nice. But there are a lot of very fat women in very small bathing suits. Rio is much different than I expected it to be. I will write more about it later, but for now I'm going to get ready for the day. ... read more

Tony says Wow, where to start...we're here! It was difficult to say goodbye to everyone at the airport, but I'm glad our friends and family were there to see us off, I can't say how much we both appreciate it. I had to make a special effort to hold back the tears as I wanted to make sure I said my goodbyes properly, if that's possible? The embraces seemed all too fleeting and I wish I could have said more. I hope that in the days before we managed to let you all know how much we love you all, and how much we will miss you. Leaving brought many mixed feelings, intrepidation, anticipation, apprehension, excitement! Although it was unpleasant I dont mind saying it was hard to keep the grin off our faces for a ... read more
