Sao Luis has a colourful historic centre. Originally settled by the French, then occupied by the Dutch and Portugese, it has a mix of architecture. We stayed in a hotel housed in a colonial building, with great big rooms and a huge staircase. The historic area is being restored, with some good museums, colourful facades and cobbled streets - all of this alongside some derelict colonial buildings with trees growing from them. The contrast of restored and derelict is what makes it interesting though. We spent an afternoon meandering around Sao Luis' streets, stopping a couple of times to get a drink or an icecream. It is hot, hot, hot here - we sweat so much during the day that we have to drink almost continuously to keep hydrated. Our first lunch in the town was ... read more

Vacation from my work in China, and back again to Brazil, it is always nice to be in Brazil, this time my destination is the north of Brazil, the Maranhão estate, to visit the national park of Lençois Maranhense, that was a place I always wanted to go. First of all I arrived in Sao Luis, the capital of Maranhão estate, I was impressed by the city, even the low incoming and chaotic appearance, there is a strong feeling of culture, museum, art exhibition, music and film festival, that is all I found during the few days I stayed in São Luis. The funny thing was while I was watching the movies in the film festival, I met a Italian girl, she is going to Rio de Janeiro after tomorrow to find her friend, and I ... read more

São Luís is the capital of the state of Maranhão. Although the city is considered one of the best examples of Portuguese architecture, it was founded by the French who arrived there from Saint-Malo and Cancale in 1612 under the leadership of Daniel de La Touche, lord of La Ravardiére. They built a fort on the island of Upaon-Açu and gave it the name of Saint-Louis. This was not appreciated by the Portuguese who, thee years later, sent Jerônimo de Albuquerque who took control of the fort. I could add, for those who want to know more, that the city came under Dutch rule from 1641 to 1644 when the city was finally settled under Portuguese rule. My apologies for this extensive course of history, but I find it fascinating to see how the European powers ... read more

We arrived yesterday at the bus station not really knowing where we were going to go, all we knew is that we need to get eventually to Belem at the Amazon so got the bus to Sao Luis. I am starting to get used to the bus times here, when they say it will take 24 hours it will actually take an extra three as this has happened on nearly all our buses!! For the first time we got great seats on the bus right up the front so no toilet smell and no one reclining their seat into my face ;) We arrived just after sunset and made our way by local bus to the city centre where it seemed to be party central. I picked our hostel from Lonely Plant, it is cheap but ... read more

Yesterday we took a trip from Sao Luis to Alcantara which is a bit over 20km away by boat - the only way to get there. There were a handful of passengers for the crossing which was a bit choppy - a swell of ~2m and whitecapped waves - but only a bit over an hour so not too bad. Alcantara is an interesting place and great for a day trip. It was built in the 18th century, fell into decay, is now being partially restored but still has a few derelict buildings and mansions in amongst the habitated places. After a great late lunch of fried fish and beer we headed down to the dock to get the boat back. When we got there there we were surprised to see dozens of people milling around, ... read more

Jean Marc and I got picked up by the taxi at the hostel and 4 hours later we arrived in Sao Luis, we got dropped off at a nice Hostel called Pousada Lagoon in the new part of town, recommended by Jean Marc's friend, a little misunderstanding there, JM thought he will stay with him in his house but he booked us a hostel instead, nevertheless quite good for the 30 reais per person price, and has wifi and en suite toilet. We freshened up then walked the town, the new part that is, quite busy as we walked down the waterfront, loud music blaring, lots of people drinking in makeshift bars in a parking lot, big booming speakers in the streets, seems like there is a party going on this weekend, this being Sunday its ... read more

So without the constant barrage of the senses of the historic district, the culture shock has subsided substantially. Today I was really able to just sit back and appreciate the beauty of this place and really kind of fall in love with it. A friend we made had a car and drove us around town a little and to the train station to check on ticket prices to Belem. (yeah we changed plans and will probably take a train on saturday) It was nice to just sit and ride and listen to some music while watching the scenery pass. It had a feeling of normalcy and allowed me to just soak it all in. I wasn't trying to figure anything out or find anything or get a seat on the bus or try to hold on ... read more

So the title is in reference to the fact that alot of people here say this to us. I am told it is because we are from the United States and they are very proud of their children for learning english well enough to show us around and invite us over. So life in the country has proven much nicer than in the historical center. Mostly because we are not in a hotel and we get fresh air. It is nice to have a kitchen to cook meals in. We have been cooking them alot of meals and they for us as well. So far we have cooked them tacos (they don't exist here) for which we had to make our own tortillas, crepes with cheese and tomatoes, bean burgers, macoroni and cheese. They have cooked ... read more

I have found that the hardest part of studying a culture first hand is the language barrier. You can witness something first hand and make judgements and analysis, but his is useless in large part without an understanding of the background. And aquiring backgrounds is difficult if you do not speak the language. This trip is extremely overwhelming, absolutely incredible and very frustrating. I have never been out of the United States before. I have tried but something has always gotten in the way. I sometimes question whether or not I should have ever come here, but in large part I think this was necessary.Sometimes I feel like I can't breathe and my chest will explode, like my brain is swelling and liquifying and oozing out of my ears, but this is what I needed. It ... read more
