so while dave is diving into the shallow end of the pool (ouch, but not serious but ouch enough) I´m off on a romantic and breathtaking walk to a remote water fall.....after arriving and feeling all in need of a moment, I sit in under the over hang in a small cave....gazing at my new american ´friend´...since removed and regretted, memories are precious to us... and enjoying the persistant fly bys of a truely massive bat...a local passes by and starts screaming at me...eh? turns out, his anger and the bats restlessness is due to the cobra getting quite pissed behind me Click for Snake turns out a 'Brazilian Lance Head' lives in the cave....apart from that we legged it from salvador, dirty bold place and found morro de sao paulo, paradise, and 4 days later, ... read more

Ok after a month travelling its about time that we added a new journal !! We flew (very posh and not at all traveller like - we know!) to Salvador and after spending a day or two mooching round the Pelorinho - headed for some tranquility at Lençois. Lençois is the gateway to the Chapada Diamantina National Park - which is a vast expanse of waterfalls , rock formations , canyons and tabletop mountains. Lençois itself is a fabulous little town with very old colonial architecture - all of the buildings are made of stone - and the area has now been protected under a preservation order. We had a wonderful time in Lençois - doing not a lot really - we ventured out to the top of Pai Incio to see sunset from the top ... read more

- FOOD: Good hot rolls on the plane to Campo Grande, new restaurant discovery buffet style like in Rio (I´d missed it) - AREA: Learnt a new Brazilian dance (although it was the same as salsa as far as I was concerned), HI hostel in the area where big bass bands play with 3 tier bunks that are VERY high - PEOPLE: Many who wanted to show us how to dance - WEATHER: Rain, sun, rain, sun, rain, rain Thur 5th May: Salvador didn´t seem as scary as it had done before. I think because we knew what to expect and because there were 2 of us. We had a drink in a street I´d wanted to sit in before when I´d been on my own and then went to the area near our hostel with ... read more

- FOOD: BBQ with lots of delicious meat bought to you, the best pina coldadas in the world made from scratch by the sweetest cocktail seller, fantastic breakfasts with toastie maker, crab served in it's shell with VERY hot sauce, good steaks. - AREA: Small island with no roads or cars, 4 tropical beaches, nice boutique shops, no ATMs, hardly any people due to low season, lighthouse parties, choppy boat trip to an even quieter beach. First experience of showers that give you electric shocks. - PEOPLE: VERY friendly with non aggressive selling skills, strong 'taxi' men who push wheelbarrows, jewellery sellers galore, 'charming' locals. - WEATHER: Rainy and grey for a few days, sunny and hot eventually (as we were leaving). Sun 1st May: I woke up to be made to feel even more hospitable ... read more

- FOOD: More lovely Bahian dishes (moqueca, cashew jugo, faijoado (smoked meat, black beans and orange), local cake base snack with shrimps - the whole shrimp including shell and tail to be eaten, Brazilian only 'pina' fruit and gorgeous lunch cooked by Regina (my local Salvador contact) - AREA: Big city. Pelourinho area has small, cobbled streets and a nice feel. The rest of Salvador has miles of quite unspoilt beaches, favelas next to wealthy areas, local market in Bonfim that certainly doesn't pass health and safety regs, very interesting candomblè religious ceremony where people go into trances, beautiful chuches covered in gold, capoeira (a cross between a dance and a martial art), - PEOPLE: Women wearing traditional huge dresses, tons of very persistant street sellers that insist they are your friend, lovely hospitable families willing ... read more

- Food: Very tasty. More lovely sucos, the best breakfasts yet, frango (chicken), coconuts, Bahian moqueca (fish cooked in palm oil) - Area: Very small and laid back with a hippy feel about it. But also very touristy with practically nothing else here except pousadas, restaurants and tourist shops - all of which are quite pricey compared to Rio. Idyllic paradise beaches with palm trees, cliffs, clear sea, white sand... - People: Locals friendly but the holiday makers (mostly Brazilian) not so! Hardly anyone speaks English and felt a bit like an alien again! But very nice to have totally chilled out time to myself. Weather: Incredibly burning bright sun! Wed 20th: After a bus journey where I was the only English speaker on the bus, there was no food and the films were in Portuguese ... read more

Faking an Upset Stomach It was the day after the carnival ended in Salvador da Bahia. I was staying at Geraldo's place, sharing a room with Robert Brown from Auckland, New Zealand. Geraldo is a Brazilian with Jewish origins. His wife is of Italian extraction, as many Brazilians are, especially in Sao Paulo. His wife is very interested in India and has named their daughter 'Kirana', after the Sanskrit word 'kiran' which means the 'ray, usually of the Sun'. Geraldo lived and studied in Texas for two years and so spoke good English. His impressions of the US is that Americans feel that the US is the centre of the Universe. Salvador is the first place where I had participated in the Carnaval. I don't know how it works in Rio de Janeiro or New ... read more

well it has been a while since our last entry. we last left off with lencois and then were on our way to capao. capao was a fantastic village. it is in serene valley covered in green jungle with dramatic granite cliffs towering above. on day one we walked 15 km to a beautiful waterfall that looked out over another valley town below called saber. the waterall created a perfect swimming pool for us to refresh. after our swim we were walking back to our pousada and wondered into a an organic farm (in port. it is called a fazenda), here we bough some fruit that was picked right of the trees...bananas, goiba, and passion fruit. very yummy. in addition we made a great connection with the owners of the farm. they are a fun and ... read more
