3/3 Arrived Salvador early and it is BIG! Staying in a gorgeous Pouseda that overlooks the historical part of town. 2 minute walk down one alley and up another steep one and youre in the middle of the Poul, which is the tourist area, full of galleries, shops, restaurants, hotels but it has a lot of character, the buildings are well preserved and the people are lovely. Huge african population, so theres a strong culture of traditional dances, reggae etc. Liking this very much. Spent the day walking along the port, through churches, dinner in the Jesus Square and crashed out, listening to the drums and music playing across the valley. 4/3 Spent the entire day in bed, had a swim, then watched the dance classes being held in buildings across the valley. Went to a ... read more

1/3 Bussed back to Natal, then onto Recife and Olinda today. Another colonial town. We arrived in the late afternoon and strolled about the Old Town. It looked brilliant at night, lit up with amazing lighting and streamers filling all the streets. Had another fish dinner, with beeries, then tottered home via the creperie. Theyre big on crepes and the melted choccy, icecream ones are absolutely divine. 2/3 Went waling with Caz and Daniel through the upper city this morning. The markets are all situated on hills near the cathedrals and provide fabulous views across Recife and Olinda. The Olinda section is much prettier at night. There are the usual colours and buildings but their night lighting was exceptional. The Contemporary Museum had incredibly good graphite pieces and down the street we found another gallery of ... read more

on the eve of march we write yet another entry. when we last left we had made our way to salvador bahia for a signal night before heading of to lençois. we spent a night in salvador soaking up the colonial artistry and some bahian food. in the morning we were off to the bus station for our next 7 hr social confinement exercise. at this point i think i should give you a primer on bus riding in brazil. bus riding in brazil: every town, large or small, has something called a "rodoviaria"...in english this means something close to "port authority". each rodoviaria has somewhere between 1 and 50 bus companies. each company goes to certain parts of the country which is labeled on a big sign in front of the ticket office and some ... read more

Tonight we're at Cabure and it's perfect. Bobbed along in the Simbad for 2.5 hours up the river, to this tiny fishing village at the edge of a penisula. The river rns on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Beach for miles. A few pesadas and nobody on the beach. Perfect relaxation spot. Went the huge lunch, slept all afternoon and pattered off down the beach for 2 hours late at night, just following the moon and the water. Nobody else was out... except for a few friendly donkeys. Sat on the beach and watched the waves before heading to bed. Spent the next day running about topless with Shells, bodysurfing and getting toasted in the early morning sun. Ooj was going for the strapless tan and walking down the beach with a ... read more

Anyway, Sao Luis is impressive but we're too tired to care! Still pattering around and feeling like death. Lost or gained a day somewhere but not sure when. Shell's has renamed our diet the 's*** yourself thin diet* but we're not sure it will take off in a major way. Sao Luis is another beautiful town of colonial architecture and markets aimed at the tourists. There are a lot of small museums that the owners will escort you around but most of us are interested in just sleeping. We're slowing adding extra people to our group and keep running into the US and Danish contingents but it's good to have new people in the group and laugh with them over dinner! Made it Barreirinhas, another small town on the river. Great food and huge sleep... we're ... read more

Hello, this Jaya writing her first blog entry for Salvador and Brasillia. Salvador is one of the most beautiful cities I have been to, it was the first capital of Brasil and it has a huge African influence which you don't get in the rest of Brasils cities that gives it its rhythm. Its kinda like how you imagine Brasil to be, with beautiful old colonial buildings some restored beautifully others crumbling and dilapidated both existing side by side a good example of Brazilian society in general. We arrived in Salvador just one day after the carnival and the decorations were still up (if you are particularly afraid of Stephen Kings “IT” the movie with the evil clown, Salvadors decoration of huge clowns will be one big nightmare) and there was a general party atmosphere in ... read more

bom noite- we write this from a little town called puerto seguro (meaning safe port) that is north of rio about 1,300 KM. it is a sleepy little town that serves as a jumping off place for the beaches of brazil both north and south. We have had a great time since leaving rio discovering little beach towns and the rigors of bus travel in south america. two nights ago we found ourselves extremely tired after our 19 hr over night journey but managed to blearyly drag ourselves to a beautiful call arrial d´adjuda. This place is absolute paradise. it is up on a bluff over looking bright blue or green ocean which is met by white sandy beaches. the water is like jumping into a warm bath tub. at night we got to experience our ... read more
