Foremost. The other morning I lay dreaming. In the dream, I was traveling and reflecting on my experiences, transcribing my thoughts onto paper. Gradually, the sunlight filtering in through the mosquito netting draped over my bed and the ongoing calls of roosters brings me into consciousness. And I realize that reality is far stranger than anything I could have possibly dreamnt. My location, a small village of roughly 300 people called “23,” deep into a rural zone of southern Bahia. How I arrived here. Wednesday morning, I awake in Manga, make a mad dash to the river bank to climb aboard a small vessel. The river is short here, and the crossing is quick. I spend the day exploring the nearby town of Matias Cardoso, which boasts the oldest church in Brazil, with 450 years, depending ... read more

No really, that about sums it up. Thousands of kilometers of idyllic beaches with good breaks (and strong currents, whatchout!) line the coast of the Bahia and the northeast of Brazil. And in Salvador..they beat drums. All the time. They really really really love drums. Unforturnately, I didn´t have enought time to really see all the spots around the northeast, but I did have a few days in Fortaleza before my flight. Well, let´s just say I will definately be back to see all of you, northeast.... read more

From Salvador we took a Catamaran to Morro de Sao Paulo. We read articles that the journey was rough but seriously - ITS ROUGH! Penny tried to hold out but lost the battle right at the end. A good tip is to sit at the back of the boat and look straight ahead of you breathing in deeply. Penny did spot a whale though and managed to find the strength to shout and point at it so that everyone got to see it too! BUT the journey is worth it. This place is beautiful. Its also a travellers hub and we met up with people that we were in Arrial with which was really nice. There are no cars. Luggage (and sometimes people) are transported by men in wheelborrows with taxi written on them. The first ... read more

We decided to miss out Itacare as it was just another beach resort and do the long stretch journey straight to Salvador. The bus journey took 10 hours and wasnt that bad APART from the girl with the longest legs sitting in front of us and a screaming new born behind us. We found a hostel in the lonely planet which the taxi man and we subsequently found out was closed. We had a look at some others but we were so disgusted we ran out of there. Then a really nice police man (who was learning Italian in 15mins by book) and a guy called Paulo took charge of us and found as an okay place called Hotel Artemis in a good location. It just so happend that Paulo was the receptionist there. He was ... read more

Salvador first freaked me out but turned out to be fantastic. Once you get used to being the object of the occasional hissing and being accosted by people selling everything under the sun, then its really nice. There is a prominent African influence here which is evident in the features of the people and the handicrafts ie. wood carvings, musical instruments and artwork. The pelourinho (old town), is packed full of historic and cultural buildings and churches. Its also very touristy with loads of souvenir shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants. There are ladies dressed in traditional bahia costume wanting payment to take a pictures of them. Also pretty cool and the little "coco" vans where the little man sells you a coconut with which you drink through a small hole with a straw. Then you ... read more

after a 21 hour bus journey, we arrived at porto sergui. We then got a 2 min ferry to Arrial D Ajuba and found a hostel - Soduco Maloca which is really nice and clean (although we were bitten by the little critters around so take lots of repellent)! This place is a mini paradise. The shops are lovely and you feel safe - unlike Rio! The beach is basically one long stretch and if you walk down the other end this is where most people are. As we were getting ready to leave the beach one day a boat anchored in front of us and one girl was taken of the boat, followed by another and then another and then 4 more etc etc until the whole boat was empty and they were all infront ... read more
