Finally a day without soccer. We were going to the amazon for a full day. So we went on this speed boat and while we were going it was a beautiful view with the sparkling water to the huge forest. Our first stop was to see some of the Amazon Indian tribes. I made a friend named Melissa. She was 9 years old and she had a monkey on her head most of the time. I gave her a little scrunchy to hold up her head because it was hot and she had a lot of hair. We saw a lot of accessories and Indian weapons. We bought a blow dart and it has beautiful and creative designs on it because it has feathers and fish scales. We also a lot of their dancing and singing. ... read more

6/16 I woke up and got breakfast at the hostel while bandaging my toes. JP dropped off my shoes. I packed everything up and got ready to go to the airport then took a little nap. Nico drove me and Markus to the airport. In the car we talked about our stay in Fortaleza, US politics, vegetarians, Manaus, and how he came to be in Fortaleza. Apparently he bounced around Recife, Natal, and São Paulo with a girlfriend working odd jobs. Then he met his wife who convinced him to come to Fortaleza. He started working for her at the hostel and then after a year they were married. Checking in and getting through security was easy, even without knowing Portuguese. I got a snack and waited for my flight. I chatted with a guy from ... read more

When we got to the Manaus airport we first found Al but then could not find Ronaldo. Then we saw him holding up a sign for us. We met Ronaldo's wife Dulce. It was a beautiful drive because we saw the stadium. It was so cool. When we got settled at their house and good to go we went to a restaurant nearby to watch the Ecuador v Honduras game. On the way we saw cardboard cutouts of Neymar, Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, and Tiago Silva. I took a picture by each one. Then when we got to the restaurant we got good seats upstairs to watch the game. We were all cheering for Ecuador because Al's parents are from Ecuador. It was a really good game because Ecuador one. The food was pretty good. When we ... read more

Sunday – Mar. 16/14, Manaus °C-86°F – Day started out cloudy with the threat of rain & thunder storms – instead stay clear all day. Our port of call today is Manaus, which serves as the capital of the State of Amazonas. The city is nicknamed “Paris of the Jungle” and has a current population of 1.6 million. It is entirely surrounded by the Brazilian Amazon Rain Forest and the only principle ways in or out of the city are by air or water. There are several highways leaving the city but none of them connect Manaus with the cities in southern Brazil. Arrival at Manaus was scheduled for 10:00 am but due to heavier than expected currents during the night the ship was delayed an hour. Almost immed... read more

Geo: -3.10719, -60.0261My hand was munched some what vociferously during the night. 20 on my right hand!! Doh! Oh well, we shall have to keep the bite relief handy for the day! James seems totally better this morning! He has a good constitution! This morning was swimming with pink dolphins, which, I have to say are scary bloody things! They are bigger than what one would usually think of as a dolphin, solid muscle and have bigger teeth! It was an interesting experience but not one I am all to keen to repeat! We also tried to catch some piraucu, fish that are 2m in length! Viscous things! Will upload a video of the attempt when I am home! On the way back to the lodge the heavens opened amazon style again but this time we ... read more

Geo: -3.10719, -60.0261The previous night I'm not sure how many mosi's were trapped in our net or whether my legs touched the net whilst asleep, but the back of my legs got somewhat annihilated!! Also James developed a bad belly in the night and had not slept. He stayed in bed throughout breakfast, with a visit in the middle from Gilmar, just what you want when you are feeling crappy! He laughed at him and asked him to play football!! Brilliant! I dosed him up with rehydration salts and by his orders left him on bed whilst we went on a morning hike! As soon as we left the boat to go into the jungle, the heavens opened. It was like a shower had be turned on and we were drenched in seconds. Also this meant ... read more

Episode 3: The Amazon 16.8.13 The mighty Amazon River and rainforest. I will not carry on with superlatives, except to say that this river is the world´s second longest after the Nile, but, in terms of water discharge, it is greater than the next seven rivers combined, and it is huge - the distance between Sydney to Singapore. Large ocean liners can ply its waters, and, when we were on it, it felt like we were on the ocean. Its accompanying rainforest harbours staggering biodiversity. We have spent the past week in the Brazilian Amazon, fliying in and out of the sprawling jungle city of Manaus, four hours flying time North of Rio and not far from the equator. Hence, it has been hot and humid. Today, Manaus is a ramshackle and rather decrepit city, but ... read more

Its early morning on valentine’s day and we are in Manaus Brazil. Manaus is the capital of Amazonia. Spent the last two days in Cartagena Colombia doing a bit of touring. First for a wander around Bocagrande, the new, built up part of the coast and a bit like a Colombian version of Miami beach. Then a day trip to the Caribbean islands of the Islas de Rosario. The islands were disappointing. Very barren and besides a hotel on the one we visited – not much else. Also the journey back to the mainland was a bit hairy. The wind strengthens considerably in the afternoon and the hour long journey back was very very choppy. So a quick summary on Colombia. Bogota and Villa De Leva, 6 out of 10. OK but not a must see. ... read more
