The bus arrived in Manaus at 6 am. When I got out off the bus I had a temperature shock. It was so hot and humid at 6 am, I couldn’t imagine how it would be at noon. I had 21 hours to kill in Manaus before my flight to Belo Horizonte, the end of my trip. I had originally planned to take a boat down the Amazon River to Belem (4 days), and the bus from there to Belo Horizonte (3 days), but I have to be home before the end of the week, so I substituted a 4-hour flight for the 7-day land trip. Manuas is the only large city in the Amazon, with 1.5 million people. It lies by Rio Negro, which becomes Rio Amazonas just a few miles to the east. There ... read more

Finally arriving in Manaus we settled in our room, Brian is rooming with me, we had a nap then did some touristy stuffs, and looked for a laundry place. Joel and I immediately looked for a Japanese restaurant, which we didn't find only to be redirected by the locals to a fairly nice one by the main square, we had our fill and that night brought the girls with us for another sushi session! Then we hang out a bit at this bar when suddenly fight ensued, it was a vendor and what looks like a crazy woman, there were some slapping and pan banging on the head, i've never seen a frying pan used as a weapon before. September 2002 Waking up with a mosquito net around your bed isn't the most ideal mornings for most of us, but then again it's better than the alternative, hundreds of mosquito bites all over your body. Unless of course you end up like one of the girls, Kelly. Mosquito nets may keep most of the little pests out, but what happens when a few get inside...all they have left to feast on is you, and Kelly ends up with over 100 bites on just one arm (I stopped counting after that). It's a miracle none of us got malaria considering the Brazilian authorities confiscated our pills thinking they were drugs. If you've never been to the Amazon you should go. Take a boat up the river for a week or so, see the local people, experience ... read more
