Hello, I think I left off with Friday lunchtime. Friday afternoon was nice and quiet at the hospital. Some of the children got discharged, so there were actually some beds empty for a change - normally they are short of beds. I had my first cry this afternoon. I got there and Gladys was really crying because her hand and arm were hurting. I think she must be badly burnt there because she has her arm tucked away inside her nightie. It´s not that often that she cries, she´s fairly placid, so I felt very sad for her. I asked the doctor and the nurse if they could do something for her pain and the nurse said she was about to administer something. I wasn´t too sure what she said, maybe something to tranquilise her. I ... read more

Hello I am writing progress in the loosest sense of the words - it´s more a case of the ups and downs really. For example yesterday (Thursday) I had a really good morning. I had quite a long chat with one of the psychologist interns, Jamil, and he told me he´d like to learn English too, along with another intern. Jamil is a Christian and believes that God has it in mind for him to go abroad some time. He has been asking God how that can be possible with all the difficulties of getting passports and visas here as well as the fact that he doesn´t speak English. He believes that my helping him with English would be a help on that path. I couldn´t help thinking that it would be a shame for him ... read more

Hello readers, Here is the task I put off a bit yesterday as I was still a bit emotional about my experiences in the hospital. Gonna make a start today (14th) about how yesterday went. When I arrived at the children´s hospital yesterday morning, I had tried to prepare myself mentally for what I would see, but I was way short of what was needed! The hospital was frighteningly basic. For some reason, when they built the new hospital 3 years ago they left the burns unit children, theatre etc in the old building, which is fairly awful. How they don´t get more problems with infections I don´t know, but they do the best they can with what they have, and maybe kids here are somehow more immune or something! When I first arrived, I encountered ... read more

Here are some pictures of my first impressions of Cochabamba. As you can see, it´s in a basin surrounded by hills and the centre is very busy, lots of traffic, people in our sort of clothing or really traditionally dressed....... read more

This will need to be brief due to slow connection and I´m afraid still no pics - I took a few today but I´ll be here uploading them all day. I arrived today at my host family - such lovely people! I think I´ll be very happy here, I´ve really been very fortunate. I live in a family with three kids 13, 15 and 18 but they´re not like teenagers in a bratty sense, they are lovely kids, very into family and their school work and they´ve been really friendly. Their mum is very motherly and loves her garden so we´ve talked a lot about gardening. Wish I´d known and could have brought her some bulbs or seeds from home. The dad is also great and plans to take me soon to see his team play ... read more

Hello! When I wrote yesterday, I should have said a bit more about my day. Kirsten, the Swiss nurse who is my contact here, picked me up from the hostal where I´d stayed my first night and took me to an organisation for volunteers in Bolivia, which also organises trips, cultural stuff, host families and through whom in fact Kirsten found me my family. One of the directors is an American lady called Lee. She was great at giving some practical advice about safety, places to go and not go, how to behave in the streets, and about which pages of my passport I should copy and carry with me. She pointed out I´d been given 30 days in my passport and she´ll help me renew before they´re up. It´s just another stamp. The other director, ... read more

Hello! Well, here I am at last with my first entry to my blog. The journey here was certainly eventful. First leg to Miami was ok in the plane and I had some very nice neighbours about to do a Caribbean cruise - had the feeling they wouldn´t have swapped with me had I asked, but I wouldn´t have asked! First incident was the missing rucsack. I got really upset about this as I´d had so much conflicting info on whether my bags would go through automatically. One showed up - the one with all my own stuff in - but the other (with basically my walking boots and waterproof plus all the things I´d accrued to take to the children and all the things many of you had kindly given me to take to the ... read more
