We finally arrived in El Calafate after a 23 hour bus journey that wasn’t that bad, managed to sleep most of the way and when awake the views were amazing so had lots to keep me occupied.. We ended up staying at the America Del Sur hostel all very nice with under floor heating which made the place feel like a sauna but cosy when coming out of the freezing cold. The hostel was built on a hillside overlooking the town and had panoramic views of Lago Argentino the biggest lake in Argentina; it was nice place to chill out with a book taking it all in. It was also a good place to book tours for the main reason we were here, to see the Glaciers. Here’s a bit of geek info for you, the ... read more

We got to El Calafate and it was a tourist town again, everyone comes here to see the Perito Moreno Glacier one of the closest ones you can get to see it really well. It took two hours to get to it and when we got here we could see why people come here. It had awesome blue colourings and we were fortunate enough to see a few chunks break off. Have a look at the photo´s attached. From here we took a 4am bus to Commodore Ridivaria or something like that where I am now writing this blog on the 9th of July. One word for anyone thinking of coming here. ¨Don´t¨its crap and some of the people we have met have been so far from the normal Agentines. A waste of space and ... read more

Following BA we ventured south into Patagonia. First stop after another marathon bus ride (27 hours) was Bariloche to hit the slopes of Cerro Catedral, the southern hemisphere´s largest ski center. Chris was keen to re ignite his passion for the snowboard while Kirsty wanted to try skiing. Bariloche itself was a great little town, surrounded by snowcapped mountains and with some of the best chocolate shops we have ever seen. The hostel also had amazing views... but that´s beside the point - we were here to ski! A girl in our hostel was a ski instructor so she offered her services to Kirsty and another British couple for the day. Probably the best thing about Catedral was the views - snow capped mountains stretched on for miles. The runs themselves were more for skiers than ... read more

Glacier Spotting in Ushuaia and El Calafate South America » Argentina » El Calafate » Perito Moreno Glacier By The Smiles June 16th 2007 We wrapped up warm the following day and thought we make a trip to see the martial glacier. It was absolutely freezing and apparently you can walk to it from our hostel in a few hours but we copped out of that one and hopped in a taxi to the chairlift. According to the guide book, it was supposed to be a two hour walk from the bottom of the chairlift and we were told that the chairlift wouldnt be working at this time of year. We arrived and the chairlift, to our surprise was up and running. We jumped on and got dropped off at the top...the views were spectacular...snow ... read more

Moreno Glacier South America » Argentina » El Calafate » Perito Moreno Glacier By Long awaited journeyMay 17th 2007 Hired a car for the day and trooped of to see the Perito Moreno glacier. The Patagonian ice fields are the worlds 3rd largest store of fresh water and the Perito Moreno glacier is one of 48 glaciers... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perito_moreno Although not the biggest this is one of the most popular glaciers as it is still growing and is one of the most active. Many people see ice breaking off and crashing into the lake. We did not. We heard the gro... read more

We took a bus from Ushuia to El Calafate and arrived at 1´0 clock in the morning after another 18 hour bus ride. At the bus station we met a danish girl and an australian guy called Micheal who we shared a dorm with in America Del Sur. The hostel was really nice and even had underfloor heating. We woke up really late and wondered into town. There were gangs of dogs everywhere, every time a car passed they would jump up with no fear. We were scared when the dogs came near us as we have not had our rabbis jab!! We went on a tour to walk on one of the biggest glaciers in the world Perito Moreno. First we viewed it from a distance. It was ice blue and glowed at night. The ... read more

On a bus heading south, we´re not talking just a little bus ride, but one that involves 26 hours on the same damned bus. Luckily Argentina possess some of the nicest buses on the earth so it makes travelling a little more pleasant. We leave El Bolson and arrive in Rio Gallegos 26 hours later and too late at night to catch a connecting bus, so that night is spent in a family run hostel where I find myself cooking in the kitchen surrounded by Argentinian and I had to laugh at where the hell I was. The next morning we are on a bus heading towards a town called El Calafate, which is down the south of the country and back near the mountains. We are coming from the east where the country is ... read more

Hi Blog Readers Us again. You might think that we have better things to do than hang out in internet cafes - like maybe wrestling lamas - but we have 7 hours until our boat leaves for Puerto Montt and it is about 5 degrees outside. We´ve spent the past three days in Argentina which we weren´t totally aware of when we left Puerto Natales but that was due to ignorance rather than a mistake. We headed off to the town of Calafate in Argentina the point from which you can visit the Perito Moreno Glacier (we thought it was in Chile you see!). It was a 6 hour journey across the boarder and the Patagonian desert and into the town. The journey was pretty smooth apart from about an hour in the middle along dirt ... read more

Just to give a quick background on what this glacier thing really is (since I didn´t understand all of it before I got there) From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perito_Moreno_Glacier "The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of only three Patagonian glaciers that are not retreating. Periodically the glacier advances over the L-shaped "Lago Argentino" ("Argentine Lake") forming a natural dam which separates the two halves of the lake when it reaches the opposite shore. With no escape route, the water-level on the Brazo Rico side of the lake can rise by up to 30 meters above the level of the main lake. The enormous pressure produced by this mass of waters finally breaks the ice barrier holding it back, in a spectacular rupture event. This dam/rupture cycle is not regular and it naturally recurs at any frequency between ... read more
