Chuck is napping so I'm solo for this entry! The glacier itself and the sun and clouds on the amazing array of blues and greys produced by the ice meant that Chuck took over 400 photos that day. It was a "gap day" between our adventure in Torres del Paine and our Christmas week in the Falkland Islands, but it ended up being one of our most exhilirating days! We felt like we were coming home when we arrived back in El Calafate, with the familiar short-legged stray dogs and the amazingly helpful hostelkeepers at Che Lagarto. The tour bus picked us up at 7am and took us to nearby Los Glaciares National park. We did the walkway tour of the glacier, thinking "are we really going hiking on that vast, intimidating expanse of ice?" We ... read more

Day 7 Although the location implies that we are in El Calafate, we will end up in Punta Arenas today via Ushuaia. We left El Calafate today, our favorite place so far, for Punta Arenas. On our way to Punta Arena we stopped in Ushuaia. Ushuaia is the southern most city in the world. The weather was quickly moving into Ushuaia so it was wise to keep our visit short if we wanted to make it to our next destination. It was not as cold as one might expect, although it was very windy. We had just enough time to snap some photos at the airport and then hop back on board. But how many people can say they have been to the southern most city in the world on Christmas of all days? When we ... read more

Ensimmäiset kuvat on otettu pilvisellä säällä, joten lisätkää kontrastia, jotta näkisitte jään paremmin.

Will they just let us have a lay in, one of these days? Another 8 am bus, but as i'm travelling with spaniards we don't go to bed until nearly 2! Anyway, today we were on the "alternative tour" which meant we took the dirt roads instead of the tarmac! On the plus side we did see about 10 condors beside the road. A hike ALONG the lake towards the glacier, then lunch in front. There's always something moving, occasional huge towers collapsing, but more often a small piece hitting the water with the sound of a gunshot. After lunch we took a cruise on the other part of the lake and saw 3 colossal pieces break off - and the rapid shot on my camera chose not to work :( the big ones go under ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » Perito Moreno Glacier September 10th 2009

We seem to have arrived in the wild west, half built roads that just stop and the airstrip that doubles as the main street of the town. In fact we´re so far south that if you set off swimming due west, you wouldn´t reach land again until you´d gone all the way round the world. Still found somewhere that serves a decent bottle of wine though, they´ve got their priorities straight here. But what we´re here to see is the Perito Moreno glacier, 30km deep, 5km wide and almost 200m high ... quite simply an awesome sight when it appears over the hilltop glistening in the sunshine. We´ve organised a trek into the ice using crampons and its just full of crevasses stretching away to infinity with the most amazing variety of blues. Again the locals ... read more

The next day started again early, and we set off in the cold dark morning to Perito Moreno. This was the trip I was most looking forward to as we were actually going to trek on the glacier with crampons and guides. We arrived at the entrance of the park and boy it was cold! It was snowing properly and again we were glad that we had our thermals on. We took a little boat to the bay, went up the mountain for 1 km and got close to the glacier. On the way up there, we heard a couple of loud explosions - it was part of the glacier falling into the lake. And we were there to witness one of the most amazing sights I have ever seen. Perito Moreno is the only glacier ... read more

As usual the day begun rushing to breakfast before 10 o’clock so that we could receive our cold toast and croissant, which seems to be the way they do it here. Lately our organization seems to be slipping, so we didn’t make it to Parque Nacional de los Glaciers until around midday to 1 o’clock. We initially thought that you couldn’t watch at a glacier for the whole day, even if it is supposed to advance around 2 m every 24 hours, but after having seen a chunk the size of a house carve off as we arrived, there was no tearing us away. Everybody there seemed to be in silence just watching and waiting for the next part to crack off. We ended up staying for more than 4 hours, but the single croissant just ... read more
