Hola, Well another year gone, but boy what a fun one 2006 will be! We spent new years eve partying in Mendoza, a lovely leafy green city with the Andes in view, also the highest mountain in South America - Aconcagua. So full of lots of proffesional climbers who have really inspired me! I saw the first sunrise of 2006 over the Plaza Español it was very beautiful. While in Mendoza we met up with Mark & Anna friends from home, who live in Sweden. We had a very good night out eating and dancing. Was great to meet up - enjoy the rest of your travels!! In Mendoza we were inspired to purchase some property, we now have our very own 2 woman tent, complete with cooking equipment and foam roll up thingies, its lovely ... read more

hey chaps i have finally gotten around to starting a new blog entry i have just looked at the date of the last entry and realised it is a month since i have added anything. I spent a few days in mendoza recovering from the ordeals of climbing aconcagua. Mendoza being the main wine producing area of argentina had some very pleasant diversions. It also has the best restaurant, a tenador libre which is eat as much as you like including parrilla effectively a huge BBQ with salads and other side dishes. After my fourth plate heaped with meat i had got to know the guy who cooked the meat so he would just ask which bits of meat and how rare i wanted them. Then i went for dessert and just tried one of everything, ... read more

Hey chaps hope you all had a fab christmas and new year. A few people have asked about my e-mail. You can add comments and messages to my blog which i can then read. Alternatively you can e-mail me direct at ballardsworld@yahoo.co.uk I have just got back to mendoza after a little adventure in the mountains. Now aconcagua is 6962 metres high making it the highest peak outside of the himalayas. There is an argument that it is actually harder than the height suggests as it is further from the equator than the himalayan peaks and the atmosphere is therefore thinner, it being described as a small 8000m peak, personally i think this is b*****ks as following this logic vinson the highest mountain on antartica at 4897m should be described as a small 10000m peak. I ... read more

These last pictures are of the beautiful city of Mendoza and our final asado on the roof of the Quinta Rufino. We were joined by some of the fine friends that we made while in Mendoza. This, our final blog entry, also shows us at the Buenos Aires Airport as we wait for the plane to take us home. I'm sure that each of us would recall a different part of the trip that seemed to be the most memorable. It's amazing to think of how many things we packed into a 10 week trip - Spanish lessons, The Intercultural Institute, the week of volunteering at the school, evenings with Karl's English Speaking Group, tours of Mendoza's parks, museums, wineries and the chocolate factory, and then our 5 week trip to Patagonia, visiting Bariloche, El Bolson, ... read more

Sat 10th. Just a 2 hour flight instead of 20 hours bussing it - right decision! An airport bus into San Carlos de Bariloche and within the hour we are esconsed in a cosy hotel, with a snow-capped mountain view from our bedroom window. There is a large Swiss community here, so therefore their homes and hotels are very " chalet" like, with wood and antlers everywhere. The icing on the cake are the 4 St. Bernard dogs, complete with puppies, handlers AND brandy barrels, lazing in the square, wanting their photographs taken with tourists. Oh yes, and the view of the lake was absolutely amazing. Surely it can't get any better than this. Sun. A 40p bus ride around the lake heading toward the mountains, and yes, the views do get better! A walk in ... read more

So, back we go to Mendoza from Santiago. It doesn't look very far on the map for a seven hour journey. But, we must cross the Andes again! Snail pass is a series of 27 hairpin bends winding their way up the mountains. The buses, huge lorries and cars snake their way up and down emitting large black clouds of smoke. After a pretty thorough check at passport control and customs, we are winding our way back to Mendoza, know by the locals as 'La Tierra de Sol y Buen Vino' - The Land of Sun & Good Wine! On a par with the Bariloche Views & Chocolate combo! We're back in the city we had to leave in a hurry (Aerolineas strike) and are greeted warmly in our favourite hostel. We're back for adventure (feels ... read more

An eight hour bus journey from Chile to Argentina gave us some spectacular views of the Andes mountains. Unquestionably, the most enjoyable parts of the journey were as we made our way up the winding roads and directly through Los Andes...!... read more

Only a couple of days in Mendoza, but a lovely introduction to Argentina. This city has something for everyone, from cafes and restaurants to some cool markets - where you can pick up a mixture of indigenous crafts and jewellery! Unfortunately for us, we haven't felt like we spent enough time here (somewhere we've decided to return to in the near future)! We did however manage to meet up with Jade, a friend we met in Chile before she jets off home to New Zealand! Miss you Jade! Hope to see you in New Zealand soon! xxx... read more

7th December 2005 It was a flying visit to Santiago this time, we arranged accommodation for new year, booked a bus ticket to Mendoza and waited in a massive que in the post office for ages! I know it sounds silly but I forgot it was christmas, and the post office was very busy. After that it gave us little time to do anything else before our bus, so we grabbed a quick sandwich and headed to the bus station. The bus journey to Mendoza was beautiful going over the high passes through the ski resorts which are all empty at the moment and past the Inca Bridge and further into towards Mendoza, past vineyards and bodegas. On our way to Mendoza we worked out where else we would like to go and realised with Christmas ... read more
