An extremely comfortable bus journey landed us in Mendoza a few days ago. The Argentinian buses are fantastic..we´d paid 6quid extra to go "Coche Cama" instead of the normal semi-cama (the primera clase not being available on the route) and got a superb leather reclining seat with tonnes of room on the bottom floor of the bus..nice and quiet and a superb place to spend 20 hours. We had hot food (3 courses) and free soft drinks, and managed to get something of a good night´s sleep...a good thing as you´ll see below. Walked through the lovely tree-lined boulevards of the city to our hostel at 8am, along with Laura, an Italian girl we´d met in the hostel in Bariloche. The hostel, the Damajuana, appeared lovely, and very much as had been described to us by ... read more

HI, Well I think I left off about One week ago. Sharon and I arrived on the night bus. Sharon had a cold. And then we finally got grounded after the 22 hours bus ride. we checked in. Then went to sleep for a few hours. It was needed Sharon was feeling sick and I was not really feeling that much better. When we woke up we went out and Got some food. We ran into The Calfornian at the same restuarant. It can be a small world. We talked a bit and then we ate. We enjoyed the warmth and the sun. We than left there said Farewell to the The Calfornian. We went to get a cup of some where else. It was much warmer than it was in Bar. I was sitting there ... read more

Spent the last few days in Mendoza, a town somewhere in Central Argentina. This small town is famous for its wineries (bodegas) and it produces 70% of the wine in Argentina. It also provides pretty much options for outdoor activities like water-rafting, trekking, mountain biking, skiing (but in winter only) etc. Like the relaxing feel of this town. Shops are closed in the afternoon from 1 to 5pm for siesta and everything seems to come to a standstill in the afternoon. By evening, the shops are reopen, and people can hang out till pretty late at night. Yes, it´s safe to go out at night here, so no worries. I must give credit mention to Hostel Alamo, where we stayed for the last few days. The hostel was refurbished from a house, so it seems as ... read more

Something new I learnt about my travel companion, OSM. I didn´t know one can react so strangely when you are afraid of something. Mimi (the family dog), a rather big but skinny mongrel, roams freely in the house, mostly in the evening. While we were having dinner one evening, Mimi happend to come by to ¨greet¨us and the next thing I knew, OSM actually stood up on her chair, jumped onto the window ledge and soon onto the dining table. We were SOOOOOO shocked to see that kind of reaction from her. After that, she went into hiding and never want to come down to the dining room again. And on another occasion, we were about to go gai gai and Mimi was hanging around the lobby. OSM didn´t know where to run and she actually ... read more

Here I am in Mendoza...A 4 days break in Argentina after two weeks in Chile and before returning on the pacific coast of South America for continuing my way North : roads and buses are better on the Chilian side and considering the time I will spend in transportation in the next days it is better to try to optimize! Mendoza is like a big city and except the fact it is on the Argentinian side (after 2 and half months in South America, I have not enought yet of their Biffe de Chorizo!) it has not much to say about it, not to say I am a bit desappointed. Yeah, there are things to be done around the city but it is remote, not really cheap and don't know, not really original (or it requires ... read more

hello all!...i hope this finds everyone doing well and enjoying the start to a fabulous spring (at least in the EEUU)! after a few days back in the lovely buenos aires for some much needed r&r..and one suburb U2 show, i jumped on an overnight bus for the 14 hour trip to mendoza. some of you may be familiar with the name mendoza, as it can be found proudly marking the labels of delicious malbec's, cab's, and merlot exports. i was excited to spend a few days exploring the infamous "wine region" of argentina, and arrived early morning and found my way to a cute little hostel, called Hostel Alamo, located off one of the main plazas. rick and paul (friend meet in BA, but lives in chicago!) were due to arrive later in the day, and ... read more

We arrive in Mendoza refreshed from a good nights sleep and hop in a cab to Damajuana Hostel which is highly recommended. Other people had the same idea and we were placed in an all girls room with 4 bunk beds. Nicole and I would prefer not to bunk with so many people, plus we were told that those beds were only free for the next two days, after which we would have to move into a 10 bed mixed dorm! We decided to spend most of the day checking out hotels to see what was available. Many hotels and hostels were full as this is high season, but we encountered Hotel Windsor which is located in front of Plaza Chile. We were told to call early in the morning to check availability. We spend ... read more

We're taking a tour into the Andes to try to glimpse Aconcagua - the tallest mountain in the world, after Mt. Everest, at 7021 meters. The bus picks us up at the hotel and we're off. The drive is a real lesson in geology and geography. The skies are fascinating as well. I even catch sight of a guanaco, related to the camel but without the hump. I thought it was a llama. Our group is international and the guide, Julio is off to Florida next week to work in tourism. The driver, Mario, is a professor in his real life (or so we are told).... read more

Having joined forces with Holden and Julia, we are off to the wine country of Argentina. We have been tasting the wines with every meal and find the Malbecs very good. They may be competing with the full-bodied cabernets of the US. We will be staying at the Nuevo Hotel San Francisco in the Coria neighborhood of Mendoza.... read more
